Edmund White on writing, incest, life and Larry Kramer

Thursday, November 8, 2007

What you are about to read is an American life as lived by renowned author Edmund White. His life has been a crossroads, the fulcrum of high-brow Classicism and low-brow Brett Easton Ellisism. It is not for the faint. He has been the toast of the literary elite in New York, London and Paris, befriending artistic luminaries such as Salman Rushdie and Sir Ian McKellen while writing about a family where he was jealous his sister was having sex with his father as he fought off his mother’s amorous pursuit.

The fact is, Edmund White exists. His life exists. To the casual reader, they may find it disquieting that someone like his father existed in 1950’s America and that White’s work is the progeny of his intimate effort to understand his own experience.

Wikinews reporter David Shankbone understood that an interview with Edmund White, who is professor of creative writing at Princeton University, who wrote the seminal biography of Jean Genet, and who no longer can keep track of how many sex partners he has encountered, meant nothing would be off limits. Nothing was. Late in the interview they were joined by his partner Michael Caroll, who discussed White’s enduring feud with influential writer and activist Larry Kramer.

UK energy companies announce that prices for bills could increase

Saturday, September 19, 2009

Six energy companies in the United Kingdom have announced that it is likely that the prices for energy bills could increase over the course of 2010.

The companies, which are nicknamed the “big six” in the United Kingdom, did not pass on information that there would be price cuts in energy bills despite increasing profits. However, the companies have in fact sent a message in response saying that the prices of bills may even increase over the course of the next year. Energy company watchdog the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem) have estimated that energy companies will make gross margins of £170 ($276) per dual fual customer over the course of the next twelve months, due to the recent fall in wholesale energy costs.

Ofgem have said: “Our analysis shows that based on an 18-month hedging strategy and assuming that retail prices remain unchanged, projected gross margin is set to increase by around £80 for dual fuel customers over the next six months.”

The “big six” energy companies in the United Kingdom are British Gas, E-on, Npower, Scottish and Southern Energy, Scottish Power, and EDF Energy. British Gas stated: “Prices [are] likely to remain at historically high levels, and in fact likely to increase as non-commodity costs rise ever upwards.”

EDF Energy said: “[We] would of course be prepared to reduce tariffs if market conditions allowed.” Scottish Power stated: “There are no immediate signals that would indicate a fall in retail prices for this winter, and risks of an increase next year.” Scottish & Southern Energy commented: “With forward annual wholesale prices significantly higher, and with upward pressures in terms of distribution, environmental and social costs, seeking to avoid an increase between now and the end of 2010 is an important goal.”

Meanwhile, a study by Consumer Focus in early September 2009 suggested that “energy companies were overcharging customers by £100 ($162) every year. A spokesperson for Ofgem said that there was no evidence of any cartel in operation, or evidence of profiteering. The spokesperson commented: “It is up to the companies themselves to decide whether to cut their bills. Consumer Focus data suggests that Scottish Power has increased dual fuel prices by the most since 2003 – up 148% – while decreasing prices by 0.6% so far this year. RWE’s Npower has increased tariffs by 132% since 2003, but has reduced bills by 2.7% in 2009.”

Colleges offering admission to displaced New Orleans students/LA-ND

See the discussion page for instructions on adding schools to this list and for an alphabetically arranged listing of schools.

Due to the damage by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent flooding, a number of colleges and universities in the New Orleans metropolitan area will not be able to hold classes for the fall 2005 semester. It is estimated that 75,000 to 100,000 students have been displaced. [1]. In response, institutions across the United States and Canada are offering late registration for displaced students so that their academic progress is not unduly delayed. Some are offering free or reduced admission to displaced students. At some universities, especially state universities, this offer is limited to residents of the area.

Horse Racing Tips Understanding Maiden Races

Submitted by: Chris Ortiz

Knowing how to pick winners is the key to making money at the races. Contrary to what most people think, you don’t need a crystal ball in order to accurately predict the winner.

Many people dream of becoming professional gamblers and making a living ‘playing the ponies’. While it’s a very difficult profession – no more than 5% of all horse players earn their livelihood at the race track – it is not impossible. You can beat the races. The key, of course, is knowing how to pick winners.

The process of handicapping a horse race is rather time consuming and, depending on the handicapper, can be extremely complex and detail oriented. Horse race handicapping, in its simplest form, is the process of correctly assigning attributes to each individual horse. Some attributes will be positive and some will be negative, and each will carry its own weight when the handicapper finally draws a conclusion. There are a few tell-tale signs of potential winners. Some are obvious while some are not. Likewise, there are tell-tale signs of potential losers. Let’s talk about some of the indicators for maiden horses.

A maiden race is a race where none of the entrants have won a race. There are two class levels: maiden claiming and maiden special weight.

In Maiden Claiming races, all of the entrants are up for sale at the stated claiming price. Would you like to own a race horse? It’s easy: show up at a race track where there are claiming races, connect with a licensed trainer, and drop a claim form in the claim box for the horse you want to purchase before the race starts. After the race starts, you own the horse. However, if the horse happens to win the race or earn any money during that start, the earnings go to the connections that owned the horse before the race started. Once the race ends, you’ll need to either let your trainer keep the horse in one of his stalls at the track (or at a barn off-site), or you can take the horse home with you.

The other type of maiden race is called a Maiden Special Weight. In these races, the horses are not up for sale. Thus, a trainer doesn’t risk losing a horse by entering it into a Maiden Special Weight race. Maiden Claiming races usually have the cheapest and least talented horses whereas Maiden Special Weight races typically have the highest caliber horses.

When handicapping a maiden race – whether it is a claiming race or a maiden special weight – it’s important that you take note of which horses came from the highest class races. For example, if Horse A comes from a $50,000 Maiden Claiming race and Horse B comes from a $50,000 Maiden Special Weight race, Horse B raced in a more competitive race in its last start.

Other than Maiden Special Weight races being superior to Maiden Claiming Races, the purse value and/or the claiming price is also an indicator of the caliber of horses. For example, let’s say there are four horses in an upcoming race:

Horse A previously raced in a $50,000 claiming race.

Horse B previously raced in a $12,000 claiming race.

Horse C previously raced in a $50,000 Maiden Special Weight race.

Horse D previously raced in a $60,000 Maiden Special Weight race.

Which horse came from the most competitive race? Answer: Horse D.

Knowing the class level of a horses previous start is very important to narrowing down the list of potential winners. Most often, horses dropping from higher class races give much better performances than in their previous start.

The next element you must consider when analyzing a maiden race is the current class level. For example, let’s say the above horses are competing in a $60,000 Maiden Special Weight race. By comparing the class level of their previous race, we can acknowledge the following:

Horse A is moving UP in class from a $50,000 claimer to a $50,000 Maiden Special Weight.

Horse B is moving UP in class from a $12,000 claimer to a $50,000 Maiden Special Weight.

Horse C is moving UP in class from a $50,000 Maiden Special Weight to a $60,000 Maiden Special Weight.

Horse D is racing at an EQUAL or SAME class level as its previous race.

With that information in hand, we can assume the trainers for horses A, B, and C think their horse is improving and might be able to win at the higher class level. They are moving their horses up in class.

If the same horses were now racing in a $12,000 maiden claiming race, we could acknowledge that Horses B, C, and D are dropping significantly in class while Horse A is racing at the same class level. Based on the knowledge that three of the horses are dropping significantly in class and two of them (Horse C and D) are ‘up for sale’ for a $12,000 price tag, we have to wonder if there is something potentially wrong with either of the two horses now up for sale. Maybe one of them has a career-ending injury and the trainer is trying to get rid of the horse by having another trainer claim it?

If a maiden horse is dropping significantly in class, you should analyze its previous races at the higher class levels. If the horse never performed decently at the higher class level, then the trainer might simply be dropping the horse to a more appropriate class level. However, if the horse gave solid performances at much higher class levels and is now suddenly entered into a very low level claiming race, you should consider the class drop as a warning sign as there might be something wrong with the horse. In such a situation, it might be best to not wager on the race at all because any horse that takes a significant class drop is going to bet down heavily by the public, which means the payoffs would be terrible even if the horse wins.

While there are many other factors to consider when handicapping a maiden race, understanding class levels is one of the most important aspects to learn.

Wikinews interviews Great Britain men’s national wheelchair basketball player Joni Pollock

Wikinews interviews Great Britain men’s national wheelchair basketball player Joni Pollock

Wednesday, July 25, 2012

Homebush Bay, New South Wales —Wikinews sat down with Great Britain men’s national wheelchair basketball player Joni Pollock before a practice session at the Rollers & Gliders World Challenge in Sydney.

 • 1
 • 2
 • 3

British-born Pollock was born with the condition spina bifida. He explained he could walk with difficulty up until age twelve or thirteen, after which he began using a wheelchair. Shortly after this, he began playing wheelchair basketball. He attended a disabilities tournament for children with disabilities in England, where he tried both wheelchair basketball, since he came from a town where team sports were popular; and wheelchair tennis, as he’d played with an able-bodied friend. Ultimately, he chose wheelchair basketball as it was a team sport.

Wikinews asked Pollock about being loud towards his team mates during the match on July 20 between the Australian Rollers and the Great Britain Bulldogs. He said he was out of wheelchair basketball for nine months due to a pressure sore and surgery on his shoulder, and has been making a comeback since January, with the doctors and physiotherapists giving him the all-clear in April. On that night, he said, the Australian team used bullying tactics and some of his teammates on the British team didn’t step up to win the game. He also said that no matter what team his team plays against, he has a target on his back because of his calibre of playing in the game, and his team failed to to understand it that night, leaving him frustrated with his team and himself; and, he hates coming to Australia during a Paralympic year since the home town —that is, Australian— referees do not protect the visiting team from the home team’s dirty playing, which puts the British team’s gold medal prospects in jeopardy.

Wikinews also asked Pollock his opinions regarding Oscar Pistorius. Pollock believes Pistorius shouldn’t be competing in the Olympics if other Paralympic athletes can’t compete. He also mentioned reservations about certain technical aspects, such as whether Pistorius would be the same height if he still had his legs rather then his prosthetic legs. Asked about 5 point players playing in wheelchair basketball, he said he believes 5 point players can play with other point players but not in the Paralympics, and said 5 point players currently play in the domestic league but not at the elite level, to boost the number of players participating and to help the development of the game.

Wikinews also questioned him about tattoos worn by members of the British team. In previous years, he said, only one or two forwards had tattoos, but now almost everyone has one as having tattoos is currently in fashion. He said he got his first tattoo at the age of sixteen and only recently had it removed. He also has tattoos on his right arm, depicting the logos of the Paralympics and World championships in which he competed.

Pollocks’s team begins its London campaign on August 30, against the Germany men’s national wheelchair basketball team.

6.9 magnitude earthquake hits western China

Wednesday, April 14, 2010

At least 400 people have been killed and a further 10,000 injured by a magnitude 7.1 earthquake and its aftershocks which struck remote and mountainous Yushu county, in the south of Qinghai province in the west of China.

An official for the town of Jiegu (Gyêgu), the county seat, which was one of the worst-hit locations, said that “the death toll will definitely go up.”

The USGS reports the tremors started at 07.49 local time (23.49 UTC). The epicentre was 240 kilometres north-northwest of Qamdo, Xizang, and 375 kilometres south-southeast of Golmud, Qinhai, at a depth of ten kilometres. The China Earthquake Networks Center, however, conflicted the USGS statistics, putting the earthquake’s magnitude at 7.1.A local official, Huang Limin was quoted by the Chinese Xinhua news service as saying: “Soldiers have been dispatched to save the people buried in the collapsed houses.” Authorities have ordered supplies to be moved to the area, but Yushu is hundreds of miles away from any airport, according to the BBC.

The USGS also reported there was a 5.8 magnitude aftershock hit the same area about an hour and a half later, at 09.25 local time (01.25 UTC).

The head of news for the Yushu county television station, who was a witness to the quake, spoke to the state broadcaster CCTV about the incident, saying “In a flash, the houses went down. It was a terrible earthquake. In a small park, there is a Buddhist tower and the top of the tower fell off.” He said that residents fled after the tremors began.

“Everybody is out on the streets, standing in front of their houses, trying to find their family members,” he added.

Another official commented that around 85% of the buildings in the town of Jiegu, located close to the quake’s epicentre, were destroyed, saying that “the streets in Jiegu are thronged with panic – injured people, with many bleeding in the head.

“Many students are buried under the debris due to building collapse at a vocational school. I can see injured people everywhere. The biggest problem now is that we lack tents, we lack medical equipment, medicine and medical workers.”

The plateau where the earthquake hit is frequently visited by tremors; however, there are rarely many casualties due to its remoteness and small population. However, in May 2008 a heavy 8.0 magnitude earthquake struck near Sichuan foothills, killing 80,000 people.

Vestas protesters sacked with immediate effect

Vestas protesters sacked with immediate effect

Thursday, July 30, 2009

Eleven of the 25 workers at the Vestas factory in Newport, Isle of Wight, England who have been carrying out a sit-in since Monday July 20 have been sacked with immediate effect.

According to one of the protesters known as “Mike”, the occupiers were given their dismissal notices concealed under slices of their evening meal of pizza. The company said that the protesters have had ample opportunity to air their point of view, and had no choice but to sack eleven of the twenty five workers that they had positively identified; and that given that the fact that the action constituted a “fundamental breach” of trust, that the eleven would not be entitled to redundancy packages. A press release from the company said that Vestas “saw no other choice than to dismiss the 11 employees, who the company has positively identified as the employees currently participating in the occupation of the factory.”

The protesters remained upbeat, vowing to continue their occupation and have called upon the UK government to save the 625 jobs and to nationalise the Danish owned factory. Occupier Ian Terry told the BBC that if the occupiers are forced out, they plan to leave the building “peacefully”.

Vestas management were dealt a setback today in ending the occupation as Newport County Court ruled that the papers accusing the occupiers of aggravate trespass and requiring they surrender the office they occupy by July 29 were improperly served. The case has been adjourned until Tuesday August 4. In court, Judge Graham White said he was “distinctly uncomfortable” with what he perceived as Vestas’ effort to “get around the rules” in retaking the factory from the occupiers.

Legal representation for the Vestas workers had been offered by Bob Crow, secretary of the RMT trade union. Crow has pledged the “full solidarity” of the RMT and seven other unions with the workers occupying the plant.

Vestas management has also been providing the occupiers with hot meals in an apparent response to Crow’s announcement, made on July 24, that the RMT was planning on airlifting food into the factory by helicopter. Crow is meeting today with Ed Miliband, the Environment Minister.

Earlier in the week, Miliband pledged £6 million in funding to an expansion of Vestas’ Isle of Wight research and development centre, which currently employs 110 workers and could, said the Minister, be expanded to employ 40 more.

Rallies continued throughout the week in support of the Vestas occupiers. Since the occupation began, the Vestas workers have received declarations of support and solidarity from a wide swathe of the British left, including but not limited to: political parties Green Party, Respect, the Socialist Party, the Socialist Workers Party, the Alliance for Workers Liberty, and the Communist Party of Britain; the TUCG group, which brings together the BFAWU, FBU, NAPO, NUJ, PCS, POA, RMT, and URTU; and environmental groups Greenpeace, the Campaign against Climate Change, Climate Camp, and Workers’ Climate Action, who claims credit for initiating the campaign to occupy the factory. Attendees of the Big Green Gathering, a large annual environmentalist rally which was due to take place starting today but was suddenly canceled on Sunday, are being encouraged to go to the Isle of Wight and take part in support rallies for Vestas instead.

Speaking to Wikinews about the “redgreen” coalition supporting the occupation, a spokesman for the Alliance for Workers’ Liberty said: “We think this struggle is important on at least three grounds — it is central to the struggle for jobs, it is central to the struggle for the environment, and it is central to the struggle for rebuilding the labour movement.”

Photographs shared with Wikinews by the occupiers show the occupiers, mostly young men, talking, carrying out everyday tasks, and keeping in touch with the outside world via mobile phones. The use of mobile telephones in the Vestas occupation has given the press remarkable access to the occupiers and provided an effective platform for relaying their demands and feelings to the media. In contrast, Vestas’s designated media contact for the United Kingdom is on vacation. Attempts to reach Vestas Newport factory manager Patrick Weir, whom a Vestas representative at the company’s Danish headquarters stated was handling press inquiries regarding the occupation, received no reply.

Vestas plans to close the factory on July 31, citing the difficulties of obtaining planning permission for wind farms in the United Kingdom. All blades manufactured at Vestas’ Newport plant are sent to the United States. 1900 employees of the company in Northern Europe face job losses, 625 of them in Vestas’s plants in the south of England.
