Proton rocket fails during launch of JCSAT-11 satellite

Wednesday, September 5, 2007

A Proton rocket which was intended to launch the JCSAT-11 satellite into a geostationary transfer orbit lifted off and successfully completed its first stage burn, but the second stage failed leading to loss of the rocket and satellite.

The launch vehicle was a Proton M booster with a Breeze M upper stage. More than 300 Proton rockets have been launched, all from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Following the launch failure, Kazakhstan suspended the launch of Proton rockets from Baikonur, Interfax news agency reported.

JSAT Corporation immediately placed an order with Lockheed Martin, the satellite manufacturer, for an identical replacement satellite based on the A2100AX design.

How To Succeed With Banner Ads!

By John Iacovakis

Is Banner Advertising still effective? YES: But you need traffic to get traffic from banner ads!

A trick is to try banner campaigns in combination with a pop-under campaign. Send cheap traffic to a web page with original content and some banners from two to four free banner exchanges.

Create a page with original content, not a banner farm! Banner exchanges will suspend your account.

On average, banners receive a click trough rate of 0.2% – 0.6%, but some banner ads receive a CTR of up to 3%. Its up to you to create a professional banner with an incredible free offer, so that nobody can resist!

Now lets assume that your banner has a click through rate of 1% (one click for every 100 banner impressions).

You will usually earn one banner impression for your banner for every two visitors you receive. Suppose you join four free banner exchanges. Then order a 50,000 cheap visitors package (traffic pop-under windows) for about $100 and send that traffic to the page you putted the banner code on it.

You should earn about 100,000 free banner impressions from the banner exchanges (25,000 credits from each banner exchange network). With a well-designed banner, expect to achieve a 1% Click Through Rate (CTR) or even more.

Thats one thousand (1,000) targeted visitors, who have already demonstrated an interest in your product (by clicking on your ad).

Targeted banner impressions often cost $10 per 1,000 impressions ($10 CPM). This equates to an advertising value of $1,000.00 and a cost per click (CPC) of only 10 cents!

Not to mention the branding effects: Your logo and web address will appear 150,000 times on other sites (100,000 on your banner and 50,000 on your pop-under window)! Sooner or later, your product or name will become known throughout the Internet.

There are several banner exchanges on the Internet. Visit the page below to find some of the best banner exchange networks and a few banner design services:

Recall of Thomas the Tank Engine toys due to lead-paint fears

Recall of Thomas the Tank Engine toys due to lead-paint fears

Thursday, June 21, 2007

A recall issued last week for Thomas the Tank Engine toys made in China and containing lead-based paint, is the latest scare for consumers, and follows recent scandals involving Chinese-made pet food, pharmaceuticals, toothpaste and other toys, The New York Times has reported in a series of articles.

Last week, RC2, a U.S. toy company based in Oak Brook, Illinois, issued a recall for its popular wooden “Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends” train sets. The recall involved 1.5 million “Thomas Wooden Railway” vehicles and train sets sold at toy stores and various retailers across the U.S. from January 2005 through June 2007.

A subsequent recall has been issued in the United Kingdom, where Thomas the Tank Engine was originated in the 1940s as a character in a children’s story by the Reverend W.V. Awdry. Around 70,000 toys are involved in the U.K. recall, according to The Guardian.

“RC2 has determined that the surface paints on the recalled products contain lead. Lead is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health effects,” the Consumer Product Safety Commission said in a press release dated June 13. “Consumers should take the recalled toys away from young children immediately and contact RC2 Corp. for a replacement toy,” the commission said.

Those “adverse health effects” could include brain and nerve damage, especially in young children, as well as blood and brain disorders. Severe lead poisoning causes vomiting, diarrhea, convulsions, anemia, loss of appetite, headaches and in particularly high doses, coma and death.

In an article on Monday, The New York Times reported that recalls have been issued for 24 different toys in the U.S. in the past year, and every one of them was made in China. According to the Toy Industry Association, toys made in China account for around 70 percent to 80 percent of all the toys sold in the U.S., The Times said.

“These are items that children are supposed to be playing with,” Prescott Carlson was quoted as saying by The Times. Carlson is a co-founder of a child-safety website called Imperfect Parent, which tracks recalls of toys and other baby products. “It should be at a point where companies in the United States that are importing these items are held liable,” Carlson said.

RC2 would not comment to The Times, and a Consumer Product Safety Commission spokesman would not say how long ago the problem with the lead paint was discovered.

For a follow-up article on Tuesday, The Times visited a factory in Dongguan, in China’s Guangdong province, where the “Thomas and Friends” toys are made. The paper interviewed workers and took photos on the factory floor.

“You’re intruding,” a factory manager identified only as Zhong was quoted as telling the reporters. “Tell me, why exactly are you here?”

During the visit, a reporter, translator and a photographer were detained by factory officials, and released a day later after local police and government officials intervened.

The factory also produces other toys for RC2, including toy John Deere trucks, NASCAR racing models and M&M’s cars, The Times said. RC2 makes the toys under licenses from various companies. The “Thomas and Friends” toys are made under license from Hit Entertainment, which owns the “Thomas” brand.

According to RC2, items in the “Thomas and Friends” recall are:

Toys listed that are marked with codes containing “WJ” or “AZ” are not included in the recall.

Earlier, RC2 said that customers would have to cover shipping costs to return the toys to the company. It later agreed to cover postage after angry complaints by parents, The Times said in an article yesterday. Refunds will take about two months.

Wikinews interviews Brian Carroll, American Solidarity Party presidential nominee

Friday, October 30, 2020

Retired teacher Brian T. Carroll, the presidential nominee of the American Solidarity Party, answered some questions about his campaign from Wikinews accredited reporter William S. Saturn.

Carroll is an Evangelical Christian. During a 44 year career in education, he mainly taught history to middle school children in California. He spent nine years in Colombia teaching children whose missionary parents were stationed there. Carroll joined the Solidarity Party and ran for Congress in 2018 for California’s 22nd congressional seat.  He finished the nonpartisan blanket primary in fifth with 1.3 percent of the vote. Carroll received the Solidarity Party’s 2020 presidential nomination in September 2019 over two other contenders: candidate Joshua Perkins and past Wikinews interviewee Joe Schriner. Carroll selected fellow teacher Amar Patel as his running mate. Patel spoke to Wikinews in August.

The Solidarity Party was founded in 2011 as the Christian Democratic Party. It is based on Roman Catholic social teachings, advocating for social justice, environmentalism, and “a consistent life ethic” including opposition to abortion, euthanasia, and capital punishment. The party changed to its current name ahead of the 2016 presidential election, when its first ticket of Mike Maturen for president and Juan Muñoz for vice president appeared on the ballot only in Colorado, receiving reportedly a total of 6,777 votes, largely from write-ins elsewhere. It has grown ahead of the 2020 presidential election, securing ballot access for the Carroll–Patel ticket in a total of eight states, with write-in access in 23 others.

With Wikinews, Carroll discusses his background, COVID-19 and campaigning, presidential nominations, and his views on such issues as climate change, foreign policy, internet speech, and race relations in the United States.

Virgin train crashes in England

Virgin train crashes in England

Friday, February 23, 2007

This article features in a News Brief from Audio Wikinews:

A 9 Carriage Class 390 Pendolino train, with as many as 180 people onboard, operated by Virgin Trains has derailed and crashed in Cumbria, England.

The train was the 17:15 service from London’s Euston Station to Glasgow Central. Witnesses said that several passengers have broken bones. All but one carriage have slid down the embankment and all of the carriages were derailed. 5 people are still seriously injured in hospital, including the driver Ian Black, and 11 people altogether are still in hospital. Hospital reports early on Saturday morning indicate 1 death, 84 year old lady Margaret Masson from Glasgow.

“It’s our understanding there are a number of people injured on the train. We think there are numerous injuries,” said a spokesman for the Cumbria Fire and Rescue squad, Brian Mitchelhill.

“A train has crashed between Oxenholme and Tebay, but that is all we know at the moment. We have got two cars travelling there now and local police are attending,” said a spokeswoman for the British Transport Police.

At least twelve ambulances and at least five fire trucks are at the scene, along with 3 Royal Air Force Sea King helicopters, two mountain rescue teams and one police helicopter. The rescue effort was hampered by limited access to the remote site and poor weather conditions.

“At the moment, we have reports of various injuries, from leg injuries to back injuries and head injuries — ranging from minor to quite serious,” said an unnamed ambulance official.

“The carriage I am in is completely on its side, it did a sort of bump – and I was thinking don’t worry this fine – but then the swaying became very dramatic,” said a BBC executive, Caroline Thomson. “Where I am there are some injuries – a woman with a very badly hurt back but I suspect further up the train it’s a bit more serious.”

First reports suggested that the train hit something on the track at 20:15 near Grayrigg, between Oxenholme and Tebay, derailed and slid down an embankment. Early investigators reports say a set of points will be the primary focus of the investigation. All but one of the train’s carriages are said to have totally come off the tracks, a spokeswoman said.

So far 12 passengers have been taken to The Royal Preston Hospital, where three casualties are said to be in a “critical condition” and one serious. 3 passengers with limb injuries are at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary. People with minor injuries were taken to a nearby farm before being transferred to a Kendal hotel.

As of 22:16, Sleeper services over the affected line have been suspended. Other major services are terminating at Preston or Carlisle according to (UK) National Rail Enquires. A five mile cordon has been set up to seal the crash site as investigators from the Rail Accident Investigation Branch attempt to determine the cause of the crash.

Virgin owner Richard Branson came to the site from his holiday in Switzerland and held a press conference at a safe distance, roughly 200 meters, from the site. Branson stated that the Virgin Train Pendolino was “built like a tank”, and believed the track was to blame. All of the carriages retained their integrity and none of the windows broke. Mr Branson also praised the driver of the train for attempting to stop the train and not leaving the cockpit.

Network Rail has checked 700 sets of rail points in response to the accident, though no speed restrictions have been imposed.

Finding The Right Medical Jobs

People are always looking for new jobs, but they sometimes look beyond their reach. This is one of the first aspects you will deal with when you are going to use a regular job site so you can find a position in a specific field. If you do not want to deal with bogus competition for certain jobs, you have to find sites that specialize in your field. For instance, if you are looking for medical jobs, should you turn to a regular site to find a position that will meet your demands? Should you deal with all the other people that will apply for the same job even if they do not have the skill or the training for it? If you are looking for accurate results, you have to use specialized sites for the task.A site that specializes in medical jobs from secretaries to brain surgeons will always filter through the results you will get. If you turn to a regular job site, you will get the wrong impression that there are many other people who are up for the same challenge. In reality only a very small part of the applicants will be called at an interview for the job.If you will turn to a site that specializes in ads for medical jobs will keep the bogus competition away. This is where you will only find people who have been trained for a position in a medical office or the ones that already have the experience needed for the task. This is where you will find out how many other candidates you will compete with. One of the things you have to keep in mind is that you do not have to go through med school so you can occupy medical front office jobs. You will need a little more training than just a regular secretary course, but you will need to focus on your skills before you will apply. This is going to play the most important role in the decision you make.If you know the terms you will deal with and you have excellent skills when it comes to organization, the medical front office jobs will be available on the spot. Once you find the positions that will meet your demands, you should apply and then you must wait for their call. If they like your resume they will surely organize an interview for you.Always be sure to include all the right details that will help you get the medical front office jobs. The experience you have in the field and the training you have been through so you can occupy such a position should be at the top of the list. There are several other aspects that might help you get the interview, but pointless details will not have any impact on the employers. The site of doctorcpr.com will help you connect with the offices that are hiring.
