Good Nutrition For Children Helping Them For A Good Start}

Submitted by: Arati Shah

What does healthy nutrition for children mean? Eating patterns built during infantile age serves as a basis for life. What we eat early on shapes our overall health along with metabolism and our brain. As far as children are concerned, you might only require making a few small changes to enhance the nutritional profile of your child and ensure a lifetime of healthy as well as pleasurable eating habits. After all, nutrition has an important impact on all aspects of childhood growth, development and health. This includes:

Maintaining a healthy body weight

Avoiding health problems related to surplus body fat

Gut health and brain development and behaviou

Surplus Weight

Carrying surplus body fat is in no way a healthy sign and it sets the stage for both childhood and adult diseases. For instance, around 70% of obese teens mostly suffer from cardiovascular disease in adulthood. Once a body becomes overweight at a crucial developmental period, its very difficult to change. Good habits such as health and physical activity established in early life certainly has positive effects for years to come.

What role does Nutrition plays in being overweight?

Which kids are at most risk of being overweight or obese? Those who primarily consume calorie dense foods; thus a proper planning taking into consideration the nutritional requirement of the child, is essential to lessen the risk of being obese or overweight. An experienced child nutritionist or a dietician can play an important part here.

Whats the Socioeconomic Status?

Poor child nutrition is indeed a complex social problem, as its tied to geography and economics. For example, in industrialized countries such as the US or the UK, the kids eating low-quality, energy dense foods are more likely to be poor as these foods tend to be cheaper and are easily available. On the other hand, in developing countries where poor children still eat conventional diets and local agricultural staples, its the rich kids whose families can afford to have energy dense foods.

Ways to enhance your childs nutrition

Being a parent, you try to make some healthier choices for yourself and your family, and its then that the problem of right childhood nutrition can seem overwhelming. This is when you start thinking where to begin? You can begin with some simple basics:

Opt for whole, minimally processed foods and explain to them gently the dangers of processed foods that are particularly marketed keeping children in mind

Make sure fruits and vegetables are a part of your childs daily diet

Instead of relying on vitamin, mineral and protein supplements try getting nutrients from a varied, whole foods diet

Help your children regulate their appetite and hunger signs with mindful eating

Encourage active participation in planning of meals

Do not force feed them or use food as a reward or piunishment

Its important to adopt healthy habits yourself, so that your children have a role model for their own behaviou

Ensuring that your child has a good and balanced diet and he/she gets all the nutrients from it is the sign of a responsible parent. However, due to lack of time or any other reason, parents often dont pay heed towards their child nutrition which lays the foundation towards a good life. Nevertheless, consultation from an expert nutritionist can also be a good option to go by.

Chloroform spill forces evacuation of building at Canisius College in Buffalo, New York

Monday, August 11, 2008

Buffalo, New York —The Buffalo Fire Department and Police were called to a hazmat situation at Canisius College on Main Street after security reported that a one gallon glass container containing chloroform broke, spilling about a pint onto the floor of the college’s science building.

According to communications by firefighters, who arrived at around 8:20 a.m. (eastern time), the glass container spilled on the third floor in room 318. As a precaution the building was evacuated and East Delevan road between Main Street and Jefferson Avenues was closed to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic while crews worked to clean up the spill.

At about 9:15 hazmat crews entered the room and began to clean up the chemical “using kitty litter” and fans to air out the room. They then sealed the material in a five gallon container. At 9:23 a.m. firefighters stated that they no longer detected the chemical in the air and began to pack up their gear.

Officials for the college assessed the situation and decided to keep the building closed for the day. “At 8:22am this morning the Public Safety Department and Buffalo Fire Department responded to a report of a chemical spill on the third floor of the Health Science Center. As the building is cleaned, the Health Science Building will remain closed today and reopen tomorrow morning,” a college official said to Wikinews, adding they could not confirm the firefighter reports.

Firefighters believe the container containing the chemical was knocked over while someone working with maintenance was cleaning the floors.

There are no reports of injuries, but WKBW reports that the maintenance worker was taken to Sister’s of Saint Mercy’s hospital not far from the college for observation.

Chloroform is a common solvent used in chemistry laboratories. Minimal exposure can cause dizziness, headaches and fainting while prolonged exposure can cause liver and kidney damage. It is considered a hazardous material and environmentally unsafe. Banned as a consumer product since 1976 in the U.S., it was previously used in toothpaste, cough medicines and pharmaceuticals.

Bathurst, Australia’s new hospital to be almost doubled in size

Thursday, February 2, 2006

Bathurst Regional Council, the local government responsible for the city of Bathurst and its surrounds in Central Western New South Wales, Australia yesterday revealed it had received a development application for the new Bathurst Base Hospital.

The new hospital is to be built behind the current hospital on the same site and is expected to cost the New South Wales government AUD96 million. The Bathurst Hospital will be the first in the Bathurst-Orange-Bloomfield redevelopment project.

The new hospital will have 149 beds, up from 85 for the current hospital. The hospital will also feature a mental health unit – previously psychiatric patients had to travel to Orange to the Bloomfield Hospital for treatment.

The Bathurst Hospital is expected to have state-of-the art facilities and will share some services with the to be constructed Orange Base Hospital.

The Bathurst Regional Council has approved the demolition of 12 buildings on the hospital site for enabling works. The hospital site is heritage listed although council decided that as the buildings do not contribute to the streetscape they may be demolished.

The demolitions are expected to take place late next month and will take around six weeks to complete. A temporary driveway will then be built to replace the current service entry for food and linen as it will become part of the work site.

Upon completion of the new hospital, the current ward block will be demolished leaving the original building from the late 19th century intact. The original building is expected to become an education centre and consulting rooms.

The original building was opened in 1834. Since then the facility has undergone numerous upgrades and add-ons, with the present ward block being opened in stages from 1978 to 1982.

Other buildings expected to be retained include the Daffodil Cottage (a cancer care centre) and the original Nurse’s quarters known as Poole House.

Mold Remediation In Ct And Asbestos Abatement Can Be Accomplished By Highly Experienced Professionals

byAlma Abell

Mold remediation is particularly important if black mold is present. This is dangerous to the health of the occupants and particularly so if anyone has serious breathing issues. Mold remediation requires very careful examination of the home by a technician from Mold remediation in CT who specializes in mold detection, remediation and mold removal.

Mold remediation in CT requires the specialist to look everywhere black mold can grow. Surprisingly, it can grow on the back of wall paper. Black mold can grow anywhere that is damp for a prolonged period and where there is standing water. Really damp conditions are ideal for black mold growth also.

Once the mold is found, the remediation specialists can begin their work which is essentially encapsulating the mold so the spores do not become airborne. Once the mold is well contained, it can safely be removed from the house. The area where the mold was growing should be treated by chemical recommended by Mold remediation in CT.

Asbestos is a far more serious problem for the homeowner. Federal NESHAP rules mandate that asbestos must be removed in a prescribed method for the building to be compliant. This can only be accomplished by a professional full asbestos removal company. The technicians must be trained and have the specialized knowledge and experience to ensure that you are provided with the following best practices:

* Encapsulation of the Asbestos

* Legal disposal of asbestos

* Site decontamination in compliance with regulations

* Asbestos abatement in demolition projects

* Efficient containment and abatement

The technicians at AA Asbestos Abatement LLC are licensed and certified by Federal and Connecticut regulations. They are fully aware of how to transport asbestos to a disposal site. The asbestos must be wet and sealed in heavy plastic bags for transport to an acceptable landfill. The disposal, storage and transport of asbestos waste at non-worksites is regulated by the Environment Protection Authority (EPA). Local councils can also promulgate regulations if they have the appropriate regulatory authority (ARA). Asbestos is extremely dangerous if it becomes airborne. Many tragic cases of this are now in litigation. If the above procedures are followed, then they are the best protection.

Banned film ‘The Profit’ appears on Web

Sunday, March 23, 2008

Copies of The Profit, a 2001 film blocked from distribution in the United States due to a court injunction won by the Church of Scientology, appeared on the Internet Friday on peer-to-peer file-sharing websites and on the video sharing site YouTube.

Directed by former film executive Peter N. Alexander, the movie has been characterized by critics as a parody of Scientology and of its founder L. Ron Hubbard. Alexander was a Scientologist for twenty years, and left the organization in 1997. The film was funded by Bob Minton, a former critic of Scientology who later signed an agreement with the Church of Scientology and has attempted to stop distribution of the film. Alexander has stated that the movie is based on his research into cults, and when asked by the St. Petersburg Times about parallels to Scientology and L. Ron Hubbard said: “I’ll let you draw that conclusion … I say it’s entirely fictional.”

The film was released in August 2001, and was shown at a movie theatre in Clearwater, Florida and at a premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in France. A Scientology spokesman gave a statement at the time saying “the movie is fiction and has nothing to do with Scientology”. The Church of Scientology later took legal action in an attempt to stop further distribution of the film. The Church of Scientology claimed that the film was intended to influence the jury pool in the wrongful death case of Scientologist Lisa McPherson, who died under Scientology care in Clearwater, Florida.

In April 2002, a Pinellas County, Florida judge issued a court order enjoining The Profit from worldwide distribution for an indefinite period. According to the original court injunction received by Wikinews, the movie was originally banned because the court found that it could be seen as a parody of Scientology. In his April 20, 2002 ruling on the injunction, Judge Robert E. Beach of the Sixth Judicial Circuit Court in Pinellas County, Florida wrote: “…an average person viewing the film entitled The Profit could perceive that it is a parody of the Church of Scientology”.

“To the extent that any person considered as a potential juror in evaluating any issues involving the Church of Scientology, the process of voir dire provides a fair and complete remedy to eliminate any potential juror that may possibly have been influenced to be less than fair and impartial,” added Beach.

Luke Lirot, the attorney for the film’s production company, announced on the film’s website on April 7, 2007 that “We have absolutely no exposure for any repercussions from the court order,” but that the film was still blocked from distribution due to an ongoing legal battle. Lirot wrote: “all that’s stopping the release of the movie is the legal battle with the partner who was compromised by Scientology (Robert Minton) and is currently using his power as partner to stop the release of the film.”

In an October 2007 article, The Times described the film as “banned in the US because of a lawsuit taken out against it by The Church of Scientology,” and Russ Kick’s The Disinformation Book of Lists included the film in his “List of 16 Movies Banned in the U.S.”. An 8-minute teaser segment from The Profit appeared on the film’s website and on the video sharing site YouTube in February 2008, and an attorney representing Bob Minton sent a letter to Luke Lirot requesting that the film clip be taken down. In a response letter, Lirot wrote that “Rather than damage any asset of the LLC, the short clip merely keeps the film in the public eye, and in a positive way.”

On Friday, copies of the film began to circulate on peer-to-peer file-sharing websites and on YouTube. A link related to the film’s appearance on the Internet on the community-based link aggregator website Digg.com had 3,638 “Diggs” – and hit the front page of the site’s Entertainment section on Saturday.

I had nothing to do with this release at all. But I’m happy it’s out there.

On Saturday, Scientology critic and Emmy award-winning journalist Mark Bunker put a streaming version of the film on his website, www.xenutv.com, and encouraged others to watch and discuss the film on a real-time chat channel. In a video posting to YouTube Saturday, Bunker said “I did not do it. I had nothing to do with it … I had nothing to do with this release at all. But I’m happy it’s out there … people are finally having a chance to see it. A lot of people have been curious over the years and there’s been a lot of interest in seeing the film, so finally you can.”

We have all wanted to see this movie that scientology kept hidden away from us. We have all wondered just how damning could this story be that we were banned from watching it.

On the newsgroup alt.religion.scientology, a poster by the username “Alexia Death” commented on the film’s appearance on the Internet in the context of censorship: “It is out! And so it is a WIN if many people review it even if they say it SUCKS! … Being bad is no cause to allow censorship … And being censored is no cause to assume its good”. A post to the blog Blogsreel commented: “We have all wanted to see this movie that scientology kept hidden away from us. We have all wondered just how damning could this story be that we were banned from watching it.”

In a post on Sunday to the message board attached to the official website for the film, attorney Luke Lirot asked that individuals stop distributing copies of The Profit over the Internet. Lirot wrote: “It has been brought to my attention that several unauthorized transmissions and downloads of this protected work have taken place over the last 72 hours. Such actions are copyright violations and are unlawful. I request that any further distribution and/or dissemination of this important work cease immediately and any copies of the work that have been downloaded please be deleted.” In his statement, Lirot recognized the rights of individuals under the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, but also said that unauthorized distribution of the film “will only serve to harm the goal of vast distribution”.

Blog postings have attributed the film’s appearance on the Internet as part of the anti-Scientology movement Project Chanology organized by the Internet-based group Anonymous, but this has not been confirmed. Wikinews previously reported on international protests against Scientology which took place as part of Project Chanology on February 10 and March 15. A third international protest by Anonymous is scheduled for April 12. Titled “Operation Reconnect”, the third international protest will focus on highlighting Scientology’s practice of disconnection.

Saturn moon Enceladus may have salty ocean

Saturn moon Enceladus may have salty ocean

Thursday, June 23, 2011

NASA’s Cassini–Huygens spacecraft has discovered evidence for a large-scale saltwater reservoir beneath the icy crust of Saturn’s moon Enceladus. The data came from the spacecraft’s direct analysis of salt-rich ice grains close to the jets ejected from the moon. The study has been published in this week’s edition of the journal Nature.

Data from Cassini’s cosmic dust analyzer show the grains expelled from fissures, known as tiger stripes, are relatively small and usually low in salt far away from the moon. Closer to the moon’s surface, Cassini found that relatively large grains rich with sodium and potassium dominate the plumes. The salt-rich particles have an “ocean-like” composition and indicate that most, if not all, of the expelled ice and water vapor comes from the evaporation of liquid salt-water. When water freezes, the salt is squeezed out, leaving pure water ice behind.

Cassini’s ultraviolet imaging spectrograph also recently obtained complementary results that support the presence of a subsurface ocean. A team of Cassini researchers led by Candice Hansen of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Arizona, measured gas shooting out of distinct jets originating in the moon’s south polar region at five to eight times the speed of sound, several times faster than previously measured. These observations of distinct jets, from a 2010 flyby, are consistent with results showing a difference in composition of ice grains close to the moon’s surface and those that made it out to the E ring, the outermost ring that gets its material primarily from Enceladean jets. If the plumes emanated from ice, they should have very little salt in them.

“There currently is no plausible way to produce a steady outflow of salt-rich grains from solid ice across all the tiger stripes other than salt water under Enceladus’s icy surface,” said Frank Postberg, a Cassini team scientist at the University of Heidelberg in Germany.

The data suggests a layer of water between the moon’s rocky core and its icy mantle, possibly as deep as about 50 miles (80 kilometers) beneath the surface. As this water washes against the rocks, it dissolves salt compounds and rises through fractures in the overlying ice to form reserves nearer the surface. If the outermost layer cracks open, the decrease in pressure from these reserves to space causes a plume to shoot out. Roughly 400 pounds (200 kilograms) of water vapor is lost every second in the plumes, with smaller amounts being lost as ice grains. The team calculates the water reserves must have large evaporating surfaces, or they would freeze easily and stop the plumes.

“We imagine that between the ice and the ice core there is an ocean of depth and this is somehow connected to the surface reservoir,” added Postberg.

The Cassini mission discovered Enceladus’ water-vapor and ice jets in 2005. In 2009, scientists working with the cosmic dust analyzer examined some sodium salts found in ice grains of Saturn’s E ring but the link to subsurface salt water was not definitive. The new paper analyzes three Enceladus flybys in 2008 and 2009 with the same instrument, focusing on the composition of freshly ejected plume grains. In 2008, Cassini discovered a high “density of volatile gases, water vapor, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, as well as organic materials, some 20 times denser than expected” in geysers erupting from the moon. The icy particles hit the detector target at speeds between 15,000 and 39,000 MPH (23,000 and 63,000 KPH), vaporizing instantly. Electrical fields inside the cosmic dust analyzer separated the various constituents of the impact cloud.

“Enceladus has got warmth, water and organic chemicals, some of the essential building blocks needed for life,” said Dennis Matson in 2008, Cassini project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

“This finding is a crucial new piece of evidence showing that environmental conditions favorable to the emergence of life can be sustained on icy bodies orbiting gas giant planets,” said Nicolas Altobelli, the European Space Agency’s project scientist for Cassini.

“If there is water in such an unexpected place, it leaves possibility for the rest of the universe,” said Postberg.

Black And Tan Coonhound Facts You Must Know Before Adopting Black And Tan Coonhound

Black and Tan Coonhound – Facts You Must Know Before Adopting Black and Tan Coonhound

by

Lumbardo

Do you have a new puppy? Are you in need of puppy training tips? Here are the basics on how to begin training a new puppy.

A cross between Bloodhound and Black And Tan Virginia Foxhound, the Black And Tan Coonhound is bred primarily for trailing and treeing raccoons. This breed is a scent hound, making them excellent in hunting deer, bears, cougars, and so on. This breed weighs an average between 55-75 pounds, and stands between 23-27 inches.

Coat

The coat of a Black and Tan Coonhound is short and dense. Coat colors other than black and tan are not acceptable.

Activity

The Black and Tan Coonhound needs a substantial amount of activity and a securely fenced yard. They are highly active requiring a wide space and will appreciate living on a farm. Vigorous daily exercise including a long walk on a daily basis is a necessity. They do best in an active family, with a work to do.

Temperament

The Black and Tan Coonhound is highly devoted and energetic that makes a great watch dog. This breed is very safe to have around. They are naturally not aggressive, and is mostly gentle, tolerant, independent, although may be stubborn at times. Highly sociable, this dog takes pleasure in the company of humans and other dogs.

Because of the Coonhound’s stamina, they may be unfit as a household pet unless with a great deal of activity and enough space to roam in is provided.

Overview

The Black and Tan Coonhound is a large and powerful dog that is known to be a trail and tree worker. The general notion of this breed is power, alertness, and agility with the capability to cover ground quickly with robust cadenced treads.

Care

Coats of this breed needs occasional brushing, constantly checking the ears and eyes to avoid infection. Bathing should be done only when necessary. The Black and Tan Coonhounds tend to drool so constant wiping of their face is advised. They are known to be prone to hip dysplasia, PRA, Hemophilia B, and ear cankers.

Training

The Black and Tan Coonhounds are reputed to be difficult to train. But, if you do it the right way, coonhounds are not as hard to train as some think. Patience is imperative for this breed. Any form of negativity such as physical punishment to push them into learning will only confuse this breed since they do not know what they are doing wrong. Most of this breed is food oriented, with the willingness to do anything for a reward.

The Black and Tan Coonhounds are recommended for an experienced owner. Some of these dogs may become a problem if not provided with enough exercise and proper training. Due to their social and affectionate personality, if proper training is not given to this coonhound, they will tend to jump up at any scent they may be enticed to leap at.

Character

An expert hunter and a placid breed, the Black and Tan Coonhound is the most capable dog with the almost uncanny ability to adapt. This breed copes with harsh winter climates as well as the tropics. Although they may be happy as a family dog, this breed is happiest when given a job to work on.

Study finds Pfizer, AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines effective against Indian variant of coronavirus

Sunday, May 23, 2021

A study by Public Health England (PHE), conducted between April 5 and May 16, found today the Pfizer- and AstraZeneca- made COVID-19 vaccines are effective against the B.1.617.2 variant of the coronavirus, first identified in India, offering a similar level of defence as against Lineage B.1.1.7, first identified in Kent, England.

Two doses of the Pfizer vaccine was, two weeks later, 88% effective in stopping symptomatic disease arising from the India variant and 93% against the Kent variant. Two doses of the AstraZeneca jab was 60% effective against the India variant and 66% against the Kent variant. However, after one dose of either, both vaccines were 33% effective against the India variant, compared to 50% against the Kent variant. PHE expects even higher rates of efficacy relating to hospital admissions and deaths, and both Sky News and The Guardian have indicated there is data suggesting it takes a longer time for the AstraZeneca jab to reach peak effectiveness.

The study’s analysis included 12,675 genomic-sequenced cases from all age groups and of several ethnicities: 11,621 of the Kent variant and 1,054 of the India variant. Head of immunisation at PHE Dr Mary Ramsay said the findings “[provide] reassurance that two doses of either vaccine offer high levels of protection against symptomatic disease from the B.1.617.2 variant”. The study said the “[n]umbers of cases and follow-up periods are currently insufficient to estimate effectiveness against severe disease, including hospitalisation and mortality”. It has nonetheless concluded that, while there was “an absolute reduction of one dose vaccine effectiveness against symptomatic disease with the B.1.617.2 variant of approximately 20% when compared to the B.1.1.7 variant”, “reductions in vaccine effectiveness after two doses were very small.”

PHE has said the difference in efficacy figures between the second dose of vaccines could be due to the slower rollout of the AstraZeneca jab, which was approved for use in the UK nearly a month after the Pfizer one.

The study, which is not peer-reviewed, comes ahead of UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s plan to ease COVID-19 lockdown restrictions in England by June 21. Johnson indicated May 14 the India variant “could pose a serious disruption to our progress”. Strategic COVID-19 response director at PHE Dr Susan Hopkins said “[w]e have now got early evidence that the vaccine protects” against the India variant, but that it was “too early to say” whether the reopening plans would be disrupted. She also said the trend indicated by the data was “quite clear”, and in the “right direction”.

The study’s lead author and consultant medical epidemiologist at PHE Dr Jamie Lopez Bernal says there is more confidence in data relating to the first dose than that from the second because “[t]here are bigger numbers that have been vaccinated with one dose.” He concluded “we classify that as moderate certainty around the first dose, but low levels of confidence around the second dose.”

Health Secretary of the United Kingdom Matt Hancock was encouraged by the findings, saying, according to a government press release, “[w]e can now be confident that over 20 million people – more than one in three – have significant protection against this new variant” against the India variant, and calling the study’s findings “groundbreaking”. He went on to encourage everyone, according to The Guardian, to get the jab.

Official government data says over 37 million Britons have received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, and over 22 million their second, crossing a milestone of over 50 million doses. Another study from the PHE has said immunisations have prevented, from up to May 9, 13 thousand deaths and 39,100 hospital admissions among older people in England.

Edmund White on writing, incest, life and Larry Kramer

Edmund White on writing, incest, life and Larry Kramer

Thursday, November 8, 2007

What you are about to read is an American life as lived by renowned author Edmund White. His life has been a crossroads, the fulcrum of high-brow Classicism and low-brow Brett Easton Ellisism. It is not for the faint. He has been the toast of the literary elite in New York, London and Paris, befriending artistic luminaries such as Salman Rushdie and Sir Ian McKellen while writing about a family where he was jealous his sister was having sex with his father as he fought off his mother’s amorous pursuit.

The fact is, Edmund White exists. His life exists. To the casual reader, they may find it disquieting that someone like his father existed in 1950’s America and that White’s work is the progeny of his intimate effort to understand his own experience.

Wikinews reporter David Shankbone understood that an interview with Edmund White, who is professor of creative writing at Princeton University, who wrote the seminal biography of Jean Genet, and who no longer can keep track of how many sex partners he has encountered, meant nothing would be off limits. Nothing was. Late in the interview they were joined by his partner Michael Caroll, who discussed White’s enduring feud with influential writer and activist Larry Kramer.
