Benet Academy Redwings 40 34 Oswego Panthers

The Benet Academy Redwings boys basketball team defeated the Oswego High School Panthers 40–34 Saturday night at Benet’s historic Alumni Gym.

Located at Lisle, Illinois, United States, the gymnasium is home to Benet’s winning streak of 102 consecutive home games. The statewide record lasted from November 26, 1975 until January 24, 1987, when Naperville North High School defeated the Redwings 47–46. Benet also achieved 96 consecutive victories in the Western Suburban Catholic Conference at that time.

The school continued to use the facility, colloquially referred to as the “Old Gym” or the “Small Gym”, until the end of the 1994 season, when a newer athletic center was built on campus. It wasn’t until the late 1990’s when then-coach Marty Gaughan decided to play one game per year in the Alumni Gym to remind the school of its history. “There is just an electricity, and you feel it when you are in there,” said Gaughan, who coached the team from the 1989–1990 season to the 2007–2008 season.

This tradition continued until the 2006–2007 season, when the Redwings played against long-time rival St. Francis High School. Renovations prevented the gym from being used for athletic events over the past two seasons. This game was Benet coach Gene Heidkamp’s first opportunity to coach in the older gym. “So much history and winning has taken place there, which makes it so special. It is something the entire school community is excited about,” said Heidkamp.

Saturday’s game was played at the Alumni Gym at the request of Oswego assistant coach Jim Bagley. He wanted his son, senior forward Chris Bagley, to experience the same atmosphere he had as he played for Benet in the 1978–1979 season. Greg Kwiatkowski was also Jim Bagley’s teammate in Benet, and his son, Joe Kwiatkowski, was in the Panthers’ starting lineup as well. “Two of us who played at Benet together and now our son’s play on [Oswego] together and for them to have a chance to play where we played is going to be a great night and great experience,” said the senior Bagley.

Alumni Gym apparently still had its charm in the second half for the Redwings, whose 15–17 score at halftime worsened into an 11-point deficit in the third quarter. Benet fell behind with a score of 21–29 at the start of the fourth quarter. From that point, the Redwings’ defense began to kick in. Oswego could make only 2 of its 13 field goals in the third quarter. Benet’s offense also gained momentum as center Frank Kaminsky scored all of his 9 points in the fourth quarter. A shot by senior Mike Runger brought the score to 31–31, and two consecutive driving layups by David Sobolewski gave Benet the lead that would last for the rest of the game.

“We hit a dry spell there, but let’s give credit where credit is due. Defense wins games and they are the best defensive team we’ve faced all year,” said Oswego coach Kevin Schnable.

Benet’s Matt Parisi led his team with 15 points, and Sobolewski scored 12. Oswego’s Andrew Ziemnik also scored 12.

Imperfect immune systems help avoid autoimmune disease

Thursday, September 15, 2005

The body’s immune system is less effective at quashing disease than it could be – but if it were better the immune system might do more harm than good, according to new research by Michael Deem and colleagues of Rice University in Houston.

The immune system has apparently evolved to be mildly inefficient so that it achieves a balance between quick response to disease and decreased probability of autoimmune disease, a condition in which the immune system attacks healthy tissue.

The authors drew their conclusions from a model of the dynamics of antibody evolution. Their simulations show that while there are mechanisms that would allow the immune system to develop antibodies that respond faster and more strongly against invading pathogens, those mechanisms would also create antibodies that are likely to attack the body’s own healthy cells. The model also bolsters controversial suggestions that chronic infections could lead the immune system awry, ultimately resulting in rheumatoid arthritis or other autoimmune ailments.

The study will be detailed in a forthcoming issue of the journal Physical Review Letters.

How I Made $6,350 In 4 Days Using A Simple Method Anyone Can Follow

Here is a simple little method you can useanytime you need money. For example, this week I’ve made $6350.00with it so far. I’ll show you in this articleexactly how I made that money.Last month I made $13,000 in 2 week using it.It’s so simple, it’s almost laughable, as mostof my marketing methods are. Here is my fast cash promotion method. It’s only two steps.Step One: Compile an “opt-in” listStep Two: Email my offer to your opt-in listIf you don’t already have an opt-in list, thenobviously this won’t be a fast cash method for you.First you have to compile your opt-in list. I teachmy students a number of simple, easy methods fordoing this in my ebook at: http://www.amazingformula.comBy the way, if you aren’t familiar with the term,”opt-in” list, it refers to a mailing list thatpeople specifically and deliberately subscribe to.In other words, they give you permission to sendthem emails.Sending unsolicited emails is a gigantic “no-no.”Now, if you do already have a list of peoplewho have specifically given you permission to emailthem, then you need a product to endorse. Here are a few things to look for:1. A 30% to 50% profit margin.2. At least a $30 pay out (and preferably more).3. A proven email sales letter you can use.4. A reputable company that you know will deliver the products you sell.To help my associates make money, I pay out a 60%commission on “The Amazing Formula That Sells ProductsLike Crazy.” That is $40.20 per sale. The key to making sales to your list is the endorsementletter. You must preface the sales letter with reasonswhy you’re endorsing that particular product. The folks on your list trust you, and will listen to your opinion about the product. You don’t have to write anything fancy. Just include a note that explains why the product you’re endorsing deserves their attention and how it will benefit them. For example:Here is the email that has made me over 6 grand thisweek. I sent it to my customer list. I prefer shorteremails but this one needed more explanation.”Dear I’d like to introduce you to a friendof mine who has helped me make a smallfortune. His name is Jonathan Mizel. And hehas a legitimate genius IQ.He works with companies such as theseon Internet marketing projects.* Intel* MyPoints* OnHealth* Microsoft* MotherNature.comThese companies are raking in huge bucks (and I do mean huge)using a method called “per transaction” marketing. And Jonathan is smack dab in the middleof this ultra-hot method. He can show you how companies are growingfrom scratch to zillions in sales in remarkably short periods of time using “per transaction” marketing. It’s the only method I know that allows you to ramp up from small volume to large volume almost overnight — without spending one freakin’ dime on advertising! That means your potential profits have almostno limit and the money you risk to get thatpayoff is quite small if you already haveproducts and a web site. You don’t have to be Microsoft to use hismethods. They work for small, medium andlarge companies alike. Not that you’ll become the next Microsoftor an overnight millionaire. But Jonathandoes use his methods with people and companiesin those categories. To my knowledge, Jonathan is the only personexplaining the magic of “per transaction”marketing in a format where you can actuallyapply it to your business tomorrow morning. It’s something that Jonathan found out by working “hands on” with the big corporations. This IS what the serious Internet marketingcompanies are doing because you can scaleup from small to giant volume in a flash.Ezine ads and other methods are great forgetting started. But how are you ever goingto get the VOLUME that hauls in big bucks– without spending a fortune on advertising? That’s what Jonathan shows you…One last thing: You may not be able to tellit from the sound of his sales letter, but hisproduct is NOTHING like mine.He covers totally different types of informationthan yours truly. While per transaction marketingis not new, Jonathan’s insights and insider infoon how companies are exploding with this methodis hot and new. That’s why I felt a duty and an obligation to introduce you to my good friend and one of the most astonishing marketers I know who has been publishing his newsletter since before the World Wide Web even existed. With great pleasure, I introduce you to theunmatched genius of Jonathan Mizel. Please go to:http://www.cyberwave.com/products/AP1328/index.htmlAOL users click hereBest wishes,Marlon Sandershigherresponse.comyourownproducts.com”How do you send out an email like that? I like twoproducts:One: http://www.email-solutions.com/higher-responseA great product for beginners that comes with an Ato Z how to manual. Two: http://www.mailking.comI use Mail King because it allows me to put a namein the subject field of the email. But it did takeawhile for me to figure out how to use it.Format your email letter in a text editor such astext pad and place a hard return at or before 65characters on a line. This prevents your emailfrom wrapping and looking like garbage when it arrives in your customer’s email box. When you do your mailing, expect .5% of the list tobuy. However, the true answer is that you’ll knowyour response rate a week after you email your salesletter. The bulk of your responses will come in within 72 hours.Follow this simple two-step formula and you can createmoney out of thin air anytime you need it.

Athletes prepare for 2012 Summer Paralympics at the Paralympic Fitness Centre

Monday, August 27, 2012

London, England — As Paralympians ready for the Games which are set to open later this week, they have access to a world class fitness center inside the Paralympic Village which is designed to maximise their pre-Game preparations.

According to volunteers staffing the center, instead of being a single large room, as in Beijing, the building has numerous rooms. It, along with the adjacent Village Services Centre, is designed to be converted into a school after the games conclude. Rooms have been structured as a gym, an auditorium, and science laboratories.

Gym equipment is supplied by Technogym, an Italian firm that has supplied gym equipment for the Olympics since 2000. Equipment has been provided not just for for the Fitness Centre, but for gyms at all the Olympic venues. The newest equipment is oriented toward maximum flexibility, allowing athletes to exercise the particular muscles that they most require for their sport.

In addition to the equipment, the Fitness Centre also provides instructors trained in the use of the equipment, the likes of which athletes from many countries have never seen before. There are also a number of instructors available to provide motivational training.

Annan invites Iraqis to exercise democratic rights

Saturday, January 29, 2005With just days to go before Sunday’s historic poll to choose a new government in Iraq, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has invited the people of Iraq to exercise their democratic rights.

The poll, the first free elections in a generation, faces disruption from insurgents who are totally opposed to democracy. Annan warned them not to interfere and promised continuing help from the UN for the country in the future.

Annan made his appeal in a pre-recorded message, broadcast on TV inside Iraq. “Elections are the best way to determine any country’s future; please exercise your democratic rights on Sunday,” he said. “Whatever your feelings about how the country reached this point, this election offers an opportunity to move away from violence and uncertainty toward peace and representative government.”

The UN has been providing advice and technical help to the Independent Electoral Commission of Iraq (IECI), as well as $100m funding for the poll and co-ordination of international assistance. A team of 40 experts has overseen the delivery of three million tonnes of election materials and helped the IECI and Iraqi officials prepare and maintain the voters register.

Canada, EU, UK, US impose sanctions on Belarus over Ryanair hijacking

Canada, EU, UK, US impose sanctions on Belarus over Ryanair hijacking

Wednesday, June 23, 2021

On Monday, Canada, the European Union (EU), the United Kingdom and the United States imposed new sanctions on senior officials and entities in Belarus over the May 23 diversion of a Ryanair flight and subsequent arrest of dissident journalist Roman Protasevich and his girlfriend Sofia Sapega, as well as “repressive practices” committed by the Belarusian government.

The joint action was aimed at putting pressure on Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko’s “regime”, a joint statement read, citing “continued attacks on human rights, fundamental freedoms, and international law”, as well as the “politically motivated” arrest of Mr Protasevich and Ms Sapega.

The statement went on to express support for “the long-suppressed democratic aspirations of the people of Belarus”, calling for Belarusian co-operation in investigations into the incident, the release of all political prisoners, adherence to the recommendations of an expert mission by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), of which Belarus is a participating state, and OSCE-facilitated dialogue between the government and opposition.

The circumstances surrounding the forced landing of Ryanair flight FR4978 from Lithuania to Greece in Minsk, the Belarusian capital, are contested. As reported by Sky News, state media says the diversion was due to threat of explosives on board, a claim Global Affairs Canada calls “dubious and still unverified”.

Total restrictive measures varied between the countries and regional organisation. Canada sanctioned 17 new individuals for a total of 72, and five entities described in a press release as being “due to the ongoing disregard for human rights demonstrated”.

The EU, through the Council of the European Union, extended its restrictive measures by 78 individuals and eight entities related either to human rights violations or the “forced and unlawful landing”, to a total of 166 individuals and fifteen entities. Those who are impacted, including judges, businesspeople, university rectors and government ministers, will be subject to an asset freeze, and persons affected prohibited to enter or transit through EU territory.

The measures also prohibit EU citizens and companies from making money available to the designated. According to the Associated Press, EU policy chief Josep Borrell said the measures “are going to hurt […] the economy of Belarus heavily”. The decision to affect entities, not just individuals, foreign minister of Germany Heiko Maas said, will impact the “economic areas that are of particular significance for Belarus and for the regime’s income”; those targeted include the export of fertiliser ingredient potash, and those of tobacco and petroleum.

The United Kingdom furthered sanctions levied with Canada in September on eight Belarusian officials, including Lukashenko, his son, and senior government members. New restrictions include eleven individuals and two entities, which are henceforth subject to asset freezes and travel bans.

Among those targeted includes petroleum exporter BNK (UK) Ltd, which, according to its 2019 report of the director presented to Companies House, “provides intermediate services to oil sector companies” in Belarus. According to a government press release, UK foreign secretary Dominic Raab said “cutting off oil export revenue streams” was one way the government would “hold the [Belarusian] regime to account”.

The United States, through the State Department and Office of Foreign Assets Control under the Treasury Department, imposed visa restrictions on 46 Belarusian individuals holding “key positions” in the country, according to a press release, and added 16 individuals and five entities to a designated list. In addition to concerns of the country’s “transnational repression” and “affronts to international efforts”, the US also cited the “fraudulent” 2020 Belarusian presidential election as cause for the sanctions’ imposition.

The timing of the sanctions was questioned by Belarusian Nikolai Shchekin on state media network the Belarusian Telegraph Agency, noting the date June 21 is one day before the anniversary of the start of the German invasion of the Soviet Union, or the “Great Patriotic War”. According to CNN, the US attempted to announce its sanctions earlier, prior to a meeting between US president Joe Biden and president of Russia Vladimir Putin, but was held up by the EU.

The Many Uses Of Custom Lapel Pins

By Jason Bacot

Lapel pins are created for lots of different reasons, from promoting team spirit to commemorating historic events. Many organizations are also discovering that custom made pins are relatively inexpensive and are useful in many contexts. For example, custom pins could be given to employees or students who have shown outstanding effort in the past year. They could be made for members of a school club, or they could be created to sell at a fundraiser. People have even made custom lapel pins for things like family reunions.

They’re great for boosting school spirit too. They can be awarded at various school functions or sold at school fundraisers. Pins are also commonly used as awards in academic settings for outstanding academic accomplishments, whether in the regular classroom, or at special events like debates, math contests, or quiz bowls. Schools can easily create custom designs for pins with mascots, logos, or school colors. And they will be treasured by their recipients long after they are all grown up.

One popular reason for designing and ordering custom lapel pins is to raise money. They usually cost only about $3 apiece and can be made in different colors of metal, or with enamel detailing. Your organization or club could order, say, 100 pins and sell them for $5 apiece and raise $200. The pins could bear the name or logo of your organization, or they could have some other design that would be significant to the people you hope would buy them.

Some fundraisers that sell pins, sell different ones for different contribution levels. Suppose you were doing a fundraiser for your local playhouse. You could offer bronze pins for one donation level, silver for another, and gold for another. Whether you hope to raise funds from a lot of small contributions or from a smaller number of large contributions will determine your design choices and how you price them.

If you are thinking about having custom pins made, there are several things you should bear in mind so that the designs look as terrific as possible. The main thing you should remember is that lapel pins are generally quite small, so very intricate designs generally will not look good. Keep the design as simple as possible. Any fonts used for lettering should be simple, without serifs. The most intricate parts of your designs are usually created by the metal showing through the enamel because it is difficult to make fine lines with the enamel used in making pins. Most pin manufacturers use a Pantone color chart so that you know the color you order is the color you get.

Custom pins are measured by the length of their longest side. Simply draw a square or a rectangle around the design and measure the longest side. That is generally the measurement you give to the manufacturer when ordering. As awards or keepsakes go, custom-made pins are great choices. Those that are made to high standards can be very attractive, and they are small enough that they’re easy to hang onto over the years as a reminder and a memento of a special time, place, or event.

Australian Parliament hears reply to Budget

Thursday, May 11, 2006

The Australian House of Representatives heard the traditional right-of-reply to the Budget released May 9, from the Australian Labor Party, led by Kim Beazley (Labor, Brand), plus Budget replies from minor parties in the Australian Senate.

While the Budget is politically popular, having as one of its main features significant tax reform, Beazley focused on the omissions in the Budget, such as the failure to address a skills shortage.

2008 Leisure Taiwan launched in Taipei World Trade Center

Saturday, July 19, 2008

This year’s Leisure Taiwan trade show (a.k.a Taiwan Sport Recreation and Leisure Show) started yesterday, with 131 companies participating including sports media companies such as ESPN and VideoLand Television, businesses selling sports equipment and fitness clubs.

There were also a variety of sports being played in the arena built for the trade show. The events included a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, free style shooting, and bicycle test-riding. In addition, conferences discussed issues related to sports and physical education.

A major topic in the trade show was energy-efficiency and, as a result, bicycles and similar sports equipment were being heavily promoted.

Next Tuesday, companies from the electronics industry plan to promote their industry at “2008 Digital E-Park.” In previous years, organizations from the electronics industry have showcased their products at Leisure Taiwan instead of at the Digital E-Park, so this move has reduced the number of markets covered by Leisure Taiwan.
