Internet Explorer 7 beta released to the public

Tuesday, January 31, 2006

The long awaited Internet Explorer 7.0 beta preview was released to the public on January 31.

Large amounts of the architecture, including the security framework, have been completely overhauled. Partly as a result of these security enhancements, the browser will be a stand-alone application, rather than integrated with the Windows shell.

The final Beta 2 is scheduled by Microsoft to be released in April, with the full version scheduled for the Summer of 2006.

According to Microsoft’s announcement, the beta will only run on Windows XP Service Pack 2 systems, but the final release version is intended to be able to run on Windows Vista, Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, and Windows Server 2003 as well.

Version 7 includes a number of new features.

  • Improved rendering engine – Internet Explorer’s rendering engine, codenamed Trident has been completely rewritten to compete with the faster rendering engines of Opera and Firefox.
  • Tabbed Browsing – users can now have several web pages in the same window via “tabs”.
  • Quick Tabs – enables users to view thumbnail images of all open tabs in one view.
  • Tab Groups – enables users to organize multiple tabs in the same category as a single Tab Group that can be saved as a Favorite and the user can open all the sites in the Tab Group with a single click on the arrow to the right of the folder.
  • Page zoom – enables users to increase or decrease the page size for easier viewing.
  • IDN support
  • RSS Support – Version 7.0 now supports RSS, which allows users to gather “news feeds” from web sites that have RSS support. Microsoft implements RSS in a shared library, known as a DLL, so that third party developers can develop their own RSS-enabled applications.
  • Alpha transparency – Version 7.0 now has native support for PNG alpha transparency. This allows certain image (PNGs) to have opaque areas that can blend in with other images and text.
  • OpenSearch Extensions – Users of version 7.0 can now use search engines by typing in search terms directly from the browser’s toolbar.
  • Administration improvements – All previous and new features are manageable via Group Policy, including the Phishing Filter and all browser add-ons.
  • Improved CSS support – Version 7.0 has improved CSS support, which means Internet Explorer will now render pages closer to the method defined by the W3C, a standards body for World Wide Web technologies. This means web page designers and developers will have an easier time designing web sites and applications to look the same on all web browsers.
  • Improved AJAX functionality – Applications that use a web development technique called AJAX to make interactive web applications will run more efficiently because Microsoft has included support for its main component, the XMLHttpRequest Object, into the browser. Previous versions of Internet Explorer required a helper application, called an ActiveX Object to implement this functionality (a good example of an AJAX application is Google’s popular Google Maps application.
  • Enhanced security – Microsoft has attempted to fix a number of security issues with how Internet Explorer behaves. This includes:

    • Protected Mode – In Protected Mode, Internet Explorer 7 in Windows Vista is completely unable to modify user or system files and settings.
    • Internet Explorer 7.0 is a stand-alone application, rather than integrated with the Windows shell like version 6.0. This means that you can no longer open a folder, type in a URL and get a web page.
    • URL Handling Protections.
    • Protection Against Cross-Domain Scripting Attacks.
    • Anti-Phishing and Anti-Spoofing filters.
    • Security Status Bar – color-coded visual and icons cues to the safety and trustworthiness of a Web site.

The current release is intended for compatibility testing by developers and IT professionals, and is not aimed at the general public.

Hard drugs temporarily legal in Ireland due to constitutional loophole

Wednesday, March 11, 2015

Leo Varadkar, Ireland’s Health Minister, introduced emergency legislation in the lower house of the Irish parliament yesterday evening, to negate the legal loophole created by a decision from Dublin’s Court of Appeal that morning. Various hard drugs — including ketamine, ecstasy, and magic mushrooms — were rendered legal, following the law governing their prohibition being found to be unconstitutional.

The drug possession case of Stanislav Bederev led to the legal loophole; his lawyers arguing the 2010 addition of several drugs to the country’s controlled substances list, governed by the Misuse of Drugs Act, 1977, was unlawful. They contended it was unconstitutional to add these substances to the list without consulting the Oireachtas — i.e., parliament.

The Irish government is stressing the urgency of parliamentary legislation to rectify the situation. “It is now important from both a public health and criminal justice perspective that the legislation be enacted as soon as possible”, said a government spokesperson. The Health Minister expressed concern both for the welfare of individuals taking advantage of the temporary legality of the substances involved, and for drug-related convictions handed down since the now-unconstitutional changes came into effect.

“The emergency legislation I am introducing today will re-instate the status quo ante and re-control all drugs that were controlled prior to this judgment”, said Mr Varadkar.

How To Live In One Of The Most Expensive Cities In The World For Less Than 1000 A Month?

How to Live in One of The Most Expensive Cities in The World For Less Than 1000 a Month? by Nazir HussainOption 1. Tow a luxury caravan behind a vehicle to use for your living accommodation and keep moving from location to location in the city. Option 2. Have your home fitted to your own specification by a top of the range couch builder with all the mod cons to your hearts content. Then park it either permanently or semi-permanently , you simply rent a small plot of land either in the city or in one of the suburbs just outside the main city.Option 3. Since River Thames runs through the heart of the London city, you can buy yourself a small boat for three people, a luxury one for more people or go for the long river boat with a lot of living space. In this article, we discuss this option in detail, its merits and benefits:-1)First of all you need a boat and there is a huge number and sizes to choose from. Consider this scenario and the savings. The Cheyne Walk home has very prestigious address as well as a good view of the embankment but the asking price is 6.5 million. If you opt for the house boat instead, you will have acquired for yourself virtually the same prestigious address and a saving of 6.5 millions or near that point”.What sort of boat do I need? Here is an example of a house boat moored in Chelsea with mooring rights till 2020 at the rate of 9,000 per year or 750 per month. This is very cheap when you compare this cost to rents of 500 per week being charged in the same area for traditional home living. The most common house boat is the narrow one; it stretches 45 to 50ft in length and about 6 feet in width. There is ample living space for a couple and occasional guests. You can buy a brand new narrow boat for about 90,000 but used ones are available for about 25,000 to 30,000.Buying a house boat is no different than buying car or a home. You need to have your future possession/home checked out properly for value and major defects if any. It is recommended that you have a detailed survey carried followed by a thorough safety inspection. The safety inspection is an absolute must.2)Mooring costs? Mooring costs range between 4,000 and 8,000 per year. These costs very much depend on the location where your boat is moored. The due diligence in respect of mooring rights is important, advised and is highly recommended. Visit the potential mooring site and ask questions of the existing river boat residents. River people are a very close knit community and will help you in your decision making process. Ask them all the questions which you feel need answering. For example, you want to make sure that you can stay there for as long as you want. Therefore, having a 25 year lease will give you the security and the peace of mind. It is advised for you to check that your mooring rights are not for a short period. And, if you are taking over a lease which has a tenure of 3 years still to run, you want to make sure that you have the option to renew it in its present state without any alterations to any of the existing covenants. 3)Are there any additional costs to take into account? You are treated no different than a ordinary resident so far as the local government taxation is concerned. For London, the council tax is between 900 to 1,200 per year. The river licence will add another 1,000 per year to your cost of living. Insurance costs in respect of your possessions and the boat itself amount to 800 per year. There are maintenance costs of around 4,000 every 4 years. So, set aside a 1,000 per year to pay for these essential costs when the time comes to avoid unpleasant surprises. Finally, this is flexible living indeed because you can move to another place up or down the river. Buying a boat and then paying for everything else does amount to a lot of money it would appear. But, these costs are much less than you would have to pay if you were to buy a house in London. Can I get a mortgage to buy a boat? There are lenders willing to lend although it is a much more risky proposal and therefore attracts a slightly higher interest rate. The point of the exercise is that for about 1,000 a month, you can be living in the heart of the London city where other people are paying a whopping 1,000 per week.Invest in a river boat & live life to the full. XM and Sirius submit FCC transfer request

XM and Sirius submit FCC transfer request

Thursday, March 22, 2007

Today, the satellite radio providers XM Satellite Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio submitted a joint application to transfer control of their ground and space-based transmitters to the new, merged company. This is a major step for the XM/Sirius merger deal, as FCC approval represents a major hurdle for the merger. This document also answers some questions that have plagued subscribers of both services.

While there is not much information for the casual listener, two of the most frequently asked questions have been addressed, at least in part:

Pricing has been clarified, to some exeent. From the FCC filing: “After the merger, customers may elect to receive fewer channels at a monthly price lower than $12.95;substantially similar programming at the existing $12.95 price; or more channels, including someof the ‘best of both’ networks, at a modest premium to the cost of one service, and considerablyless than the cost of subscribing to both services.” The document goes on to explain that channel blocking will be available, and that credit will be given for blocked channels.

The filing also addresses the potential need for new receivers. “Subscribers could continue to use their existing radios or eventually purchase new radios capable of receiving all of the content of both services when they become available.” Apparently, some programming will be available on both networks, but this will be limited. To get the full range of programming, subscribers will need new equipment.

Another major stumbling block for the merger deal is the potential for monopoly. To counter the arguments that the merged company will become a monopoly, the document goes on to describe the nature of satellite radio’s competition: HD radio, Internet radio, AM and FM radio, portable media players, mobile phones, and even CD players. “It is clear that all of the above providers view themselves as being in direct competitionwith each other,” the document alleges, and then goes on to quote statements by the National Association of Broadcasters in support of this assertion. “local radio stations compete for listeners with other forms of audio delivery offering an almost unlimited array of content. IPods and other MP3 players, music [subscription] services, podcasting and the Internet streaming of U.S. and foreign radio stations literally provide content from around the world to listeners in each local radio market in America.”

As this is only the first step in the FCC process, and the FCC is only one of three major steps in the merger process, the deal is far from over. However, convincing the FCC that the merger should happen will remove a major barrier in the companies’ efforts.

Cuba sentences USAID worker to fifteen-year prison term

Sunday, March 13, 2011

A 15-year prison sentence was handed down by a Cuban court to US Agency for International Development (USAID) worker Alan Gross for crimes against the state.

Gross was arrested in December 2009 while on a USAID mission intended to promote democracy by distributing satellite communications equipment to Jewish groups; these groups have denied any involvement in the matter. Such equipment, and distributing it, is illegal in Cuba.

According to a Cuban court, Gross’s activities were part of “a subversive project of the US government that aimed to destroy the Revolution through the use of communications systems out of the control of authorities.”

In response to the decision, a US National Security Council spokesperson said that the “sentencing adds another injustice to Alan Gross’s ordeal. He has already spent too many days in detention and should not spend one more.”

Gross’s wife has requested that Cuba release her husband on humanitarian grounds; some political analysts expect this to eventually occur. Gross, aged 61, is reported to have lost 90 pounds while imprisoned since his arrest, and is affected by ulcers, gout, and arthritis.

Exercise And Smart Children

Submitted by: Christine Dunbar

Work is what we call manual labor, and now it seems work is knowledge labor. It is very important to get a good education at the same time; a little manual work won’t hurt anybody. Since technology has advanced it has shifted responsibilities from manual work to knowledge work. It has been said it is better to use your brain than to know how to use your hands. Unfortunately, it is important to know how to use your hands.

Since there is an increase for intelligence work for the future, we as parents are making education a first priority for our children. While we are focusing on cramming education down our children’s throats are we making them smarter? No, the reality is we are not giving our children any head start on their futures by making them study more.

Our bodies are designed to get off the couch. When your body is in motion so is your brain. So the truth is the more you move the smarter you get. Getting the right amount of exercise will make you a smarter person and will allow you to focus on what is important.

A psychologist Charles H. Hillman of the University of Illinois in 2008 conducted a study of research linking exercise and cognition in teenagers and children going back to the 1990’s.

What they found was a direct correlation between the increased performances on tests in school and aerobic fitness. All this research proved that a physically active young person, who is in shape, is more likely to get good grades and perform very well in school all the way through.

Another study conducted by health scientists Fran ois Trudeau of the University of Quebec and Roy J. Shephard of the University of Toronto; found that students who were doing one hour of some sort of exercise per day had improved in performance at school whereas those who did not exercise didn’t perform in school any better.

This study consisted of a review of papers that was noted if the students performance was related to their physical activity especially in math and reading.

This study shows that if we want our children to be smarter for their futures, we need to get them off the couch. Let s not just push the books, let’s get our future outside exercising as well. It has been said that teachers and parents are pushing more study time to make them smarter.

Unfortunately, this doesn’t allow any exercise. Well teachers and parents you re wrong, add some exercise to your children’s schedule and then see how they excel in school. Also, adding exercise at home will allow children some quality time with their parents.

Exercise will facilitate the study time. By exercising, the child will be more alert, have more energy, and feel better. This is what will make our children strive. They will actually feel like studying and not be as sluggish just lying around with their heads in the book. Also, by getting outside to exercise this will help boost their Vitamin D. Give your children the best education by allowing time for exercise.

US adds 173,000 jobs in August; unemployment rate drops to seven year low

US adds 173,000 jobs in August; unemployment rate drops to seven year low

Monday, September 7, 2015

The US economy added 173,000 jobs in August, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Friday. The unemployment rate fell from 5.3 to 5.1 percent, the lowest since April 2008.

Although August job gains were lower than most economists forecast, job growth numbers for June and July were revised upwards by a combined 44,000. Average job gains over the past three months stand at 221,000, compared to March-May’s 189,000 monthly average. Over the past twelve months, job growth has averaged 247,000 per month.

Average hourly earnings rose 0.3 percent, or 8 cents, marking the largest increase in earnings in seven months. Hourly earnings had risen by 6 cents in July. Wages have risen by 2.2 percent over the past year.

Job growth in August was primarily concentrated in the health care and social assistance, financial activities, and professional and business services sectors. Those three areas of the economy added a combined 108,000 jobs. Food service and drinking places employment increased by 26,000 over the month, and other economic sectors saw employment hold steady. Manufacturing, on the other hand, saw employment decline by 17,000 in August. A stronger dollar and worldwide economic weakness make US exports less desirable, leading to a flattening in manufacturing employment so far this year after steadily rising in the early years of the US economic recovery.

The solid overall job gains led analysts to slightly raise expectations for a decision by the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates this month. Investors raised the likelihood of a September rate increase from 26 percent before the jobs report to 30 percent, and stocks dropped by over one percent on Friday. “The payrolls data is certainly good enough to allow for a Fed rate hike in September,” said Deutsche Bank’s head of currency strategy, Alan Ruskin. “The big question is still whether financial market volatility will scupper the plans.”

“This is the first time the market has looked at a Fed meeting and really has no idea what the Fed is going to do,” said Mark Kepner, a New Jersey equity trader with Themis Trading. “Right now you’re looking at the overall uncertainty and that’s what’s hanging on the market. I don’t think this number in and of itself changes how somebody’s going to vote.”

Adele and David Bowie each win five Grammys

Adele and David Bowie each win five Grammys

Wednesday, February 15, 2017

On Sunday, British singer Adele won five Grammy Awards at the 59th Grammy Awards event in Los Angeles. David Bowie posthumously won five Grammys.

Adele won Song of the Year, Best Pop Solo and Record of the Year for her song Hello, and Album of the Year for her album 25, becoming the first singer to win the Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Album of the Year twice.

David Bowie was nominated in five categories — three for his album Blackstar in Best Alternative Music Album, Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical, and Best Rock Performance; and two for his song Blackstar, Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance. Days after releasing his 25th album, Blackstar, Bowie passed away in January 2016, due to cancer. Before Blackstar, Bowie won a Grammy for his music video Jazzin’ for Blue Jean, and Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006, never winning the award in a major category before.

In the event, singer Bruno Mars paid tribute to music icon Prince, replicating style, costumes, and guitar of Prince’s. Minneapolis-based funk band The Time, who had performed with Prince, paid tribute to the singer who passed away in April at the age of 57. Adele, in her performance, paid tribute to George Michael. While performing, Adele stopped, swore, and restarted. She later apologised, saying “I am sorry for swearing and I am sorry for starting again, I can’t mess this up for him[…] I am sorry, I can’t.” British pop singer George Michael died on Christmas Day of heart failure at the age of 53.

Adele was in tears while receiving Grammy for the Album of the Year. In her acceptance speech, she said, “But I can’t possibly accept this award. And I’m very humbled and I’m very grateful and gracious. But my artist of my life is Beyoncé. And this album to me, the ‘Lemonade’ album, is just so monumental. Beyoncé, it’s so monumental. And so well thought out, and so beautiful and soul-baring and we all got to see another side to you that you don’t always let us see. And we appreciate that. And all us artists here, we fucking adore you. You are our light. And the way that you make me and my friends feel, the way you make my black friends feel, is empowering. And you make them stand up for themselves. And I love you.” Other albums in the pool, besides 25 and Lemonade, were Justin Bieber’s Purpose, Drake’s Views, and A Sailor’s Guide To Earth by Sturgill Simpson.

Earlier, while receiving award for the Record of the Year, Adele said, “My dream and my idol is Queen Bee [Beyoncé], and I adore you and you move my soul every single day and you have done for nearly seventeen years”. Other songs nominated in the category were Beyoncé’s Formation, Work by Rihanna, 7 Years by Lukas Graham, and Stressed Out by TWENTY ØNE PILØTS.

Beyoncé received the largest number of nominations for the event — nine — but she won only two. Her album Lemonade won Best Urban Contemporary Album and her song Formation won Best Music Video.

Chance The Rapper won Best New Artist, and claimed Best Rap Performance for No Problem and Best Rap Album for Coloring Book. Chance’s songs were never sold, and were available for free on streaming services.

The new host James Corden took a pratfall on the stairs while entering. The duo TWENTY ØNE PILØTS won Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for their song Stressed Out. Upon announcement, they removed their pants to accept the award. Sharing an incident of watching Grammys before the duo was famous, Tyler Joseph said Josh Dun proposed if they were to receive a Grammy, they would receive it in their underpants as they were in underpants watching the award ceremony at the time. In his acceptance speech, he said, “I want everyone who’s watching at home to know that you could be next. So watch out, because anyone from anywhere can do anything.”

Baseball’s Pete Rose: “I bet on my team every night”

Baseball’s Pete Rose: “I bet on my team every night”

Wednesday, March 14, 2007

In an interview on ESPN Radio, Pete Rose admitted to hosts Dan Patrick and Keith Olbermann that he “bet on [his] team every night” and admitted that the Dowd Report was correct in its assessment.

Pete Rose was given a lifetime ban from any involvement in Major League Baseball in 1989. Rose accepted the lifetime ban in exchange for not returning a finding of fact that Rose did indeed bet on baseball. He initially indicated to MLB commissioner Bud Selig and in his book My Prison Without Bars that he did bet on Major League Baseball games, but that he never bet against his team or used his betting to influence the outcome of any game. The Dowd report concurs with this statement from Rose.

Rose acknowledged his betting in the hopes that Selig would reinstate Rose and thus make him eligible for a number of accolades of which, to this point, he had been deprived. However, Selig refused to reinstate him despite his confession. Among those accolades include a formal retirement of his uniform number 14 and induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. While his number cannot formally be retired, no player since Rose’s retirement has worn the number, and it is unlikely that it will be worn again by any player on the Cincinnati Reds.

Rose appeared on the Dan Patrick Show on ESPN Radio as part of promotion for an exhibit at the Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati detailing the baseball career of Rose. He said that “I bet on my team to win every night because I love my team, I believe in my team. I did everything in my power every night to win that game.”
