At least fourteen dead in Pakistan after drone strikes

Wednesday, May 12, 2010

At least fourteen people in Pakistan’s North Waziristan region have been killed in drone strikes earlier today by suspected US unmanned aircraft.

The attacks happened in the Dattakhel village, located near the Afghanistan border; as many as eighteen missiles were fired at targets, according to security authorities. A local intelligence official said that “Three missiles hit a vehicle and three militants sitting in it were killed.”

A nearby compound used by rebels was also attacked; around a dozen missiles were fired by drones. The dead in that attack are alleged to have been fighters. A reporter for Al Jazeera says the strikes lasted from twenty to 25 minutes.

“The militants have cordoned off the area. So far they’ve retrieved 11 bodies from the debris. The death toll may rise because the militants are still searching for bodies,” an unnamed security official commented.

2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor candidate Wayne Tseng answered some questions about his campaign for the upcoming election from Wikinews. The Lord Mayor election in the Australian city is scheduled to take place this week.

Tseng runs a firm called eTranslate, which helps software developers to make the software available to the users. In the candidate’s questionnaire, Tseng said eTranslate had led to him working with all three tiers of the government. He previously belonged to the Australian Liberal Party, but has left since then, to run for mayorship as an independent candidate.

Tseng is of Chinese descent, having moved to Australia with his parents from Vietnam. Graduated in Brisbane, Tseng received his PhD in Melbourne and has been living in the city, he told Wikinews. Tseng also formed Chinese Precinct Chamber of Commerce, an organisation responsible for many “community bond building initiatives”, the Lord Mayor candidate told Wikinews.

Tseng discussed his plans for leading Melbourne, recovering from COVID-19, and “Democracy 2.0” to ensure concerns of minorities in the city were also heard. Tseng also focused on the importance of the multi-culture aspect and talked about making Melbourne the capital of the aboriginals. Tseng also explained why he thinks Melbourne is poised to be a world city by 2030.

Tseng’s deputy Lord Mayor candidate Gricol Yang is a Commercial Banker and works for ANZ Banking Group.

Currently, Sally Capp is the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, the Victorian capital. Capp was elected as an interim Lord Mayor in mid-2018 after the former Lord Mayor Robert Doyle resigned from his position after sexual assault allegations. Doyle served as the Lord Mayor of Melbourne for almost a decade since 2008.

Doing Business Calls For Liability Insurance

Doing business calls for liability insurance by webmaster massageliabilityFor most folks in the business world, possessing liability insurance is simply part of the process. In fact, having a liability policy in place tends to be one of the first steps toward opening the doors of almost any business to do work with members of the public. This is because a business needs to be protected in case anything happens to a person while he or she is on the property of the business. That phrase, “in case anything happens,” is a broad one, which is why liability insurance tends to be quite broad as well. Unexpected scenarios that should be covered by a high quality liability insurance policy run the gamut, from tripping and falling while inside the business to experiencing damage or injury due to a service provided by the business or a product used during a service provided by the business. For massage therapists and bodyworkers, the first part of wrapping your head around the importance of obtaining massage therapy liability insurance is realizing that, even though you are in the field of healing touch, you are still running a business. Professional massage therapists and bodyworkers work with members of the public”quite closely, in fact”providing a service and often incorporating various products into providing that service as well. The sheer fact that clients are coming to your practice space or session room to receive this “product,” which is your hands on skills, necessitates a massage therapy liability insurance policy. After all, if any client has an accident on your property, whether it is inside the practice space or outside in the parking lot or on the way in, that client could make a claim against your business for damages. As the old saying goes, “accidents happen,” and there are few ways to account for and prevent the possibility of an accident ever happening on your property. However, with the general liability portion of a massage therapy liability insurance program, you can stop worrying about these what ifs.Of course, you should never stop doing your very best to keep your property free from the type of obstacles and substances that could contribute to an accident. With massage therapy liability insurance, though, you will be covered in case one does take place. This portion of a liability insurance program often is aptly referred to as trip and fall insurance. There are several other protective segments to the umbrella of massage therapy liability insurance, such as malpractice liability insurance and product liability insurance. The first is there to protect you in case a client claims damage or injury due to lack of skill or competence on your part during a massage therapy or bodywork session. It is tough to fathom any client ever making such a claim, but insurance was created for those anythings possible circumstances that rarely happen, but call for serious protection when and if they do take place. Product liability insurance is similar, in that it protects you against legal claims of damage or injury caused by a product used during the hands on session.Follow the lead of solid businesses from coast to coast, and invest the small amount of money necessary to put a strong liability insurance program to work for you.Massage Magazine Insurance Plus (MMIP) is a national insurance provider offering licensed massage therapists comprehensive Massage liability insurance and practice support. MMIP competes effectively for clients on two fronts, while providing the best value to the practicing massage therapist, MMIP’s liability insurance package is the most comprehensive in the massage and bodywork industry. Israeli PM Sharon rushed to hospital

Wednesday, January 4, 2006

Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon (born Ariel Sheinerman), 77, has been admitted to Hadassah hospital in Jerusalem, after suffering what doctors said was a “massive” stroke.

According to reports from Hadassah Ein Karem hospital in Jerusalem, the Prime Minister was put under an anesthetic prior to surgery to address a massive cerebral hemorrhage. He has increased intracranial pressure due to the bleeding.

White House press secretary Scott McClellan said in Thursday’s press briefing that its “thoughts and prayers” are with the Prime Minister, and that the White House will “continue to stay in touch with the government of Israel.”

With Sharon in the hospital, control of Israel has now been transferred to his deputy, vice-premier Ehud Olmert.

Dr. Shlomo Mor-Yosef, director of Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem said that Sharon suffered “a significant stroke” and that he was “under anesthetic and receiving breathing assistance.” Minutes later, Mor-Yosef said that initial tests showed Sharon suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and that he was suffering “massive bleeding and was being transferred to an operating theater.”

After over 6 hours of surgery Sharon received another CT scan which revealed further bleeding. Sharon was returned to the operating room for additional surgery that is expected to last several hours.

According to Wikipedia, “A stroke or cerebrovascular accident (CVA) occurs when the blood supply to a part of the brain is suddenly interrupted” and many news sources are reporting this situation is life threatening.

Last month on December 18th, Sharon suffered a minor stroke and was admitted to the Hadassah Ein Kerem hospital after feeling unwell driving home and having difficulties with his speech. During his treatment, he was found to have a minor hole in his heart and was scheduled for surgery on January 5th. Sharon was treated and released December 20th.

Sharon’s notorious overeating was a significant risk factor for the health complications he has experienced. Prior to his first stroke, he consumed a meal consisting of hamburgers, lamb, kebabs, steak in chimchurri sauce, and salad. Since that stroke Sharon had lost weight, though he had been known to have his security detail smuggle him pita filled with greasy meat during previous efforts.

On January 6th, in a front-page article in Canada’s The Globe and Mail newspaper, Canadian medical experts questioned the anticoagulent that Sharon had been receiving before his massive stroke, noting that the decision to use it may have cost him his life, and that he would have been unlikely to receive that treatment in Canada. They also noted that his prognosis for recovery is extremely poor.

Doctor robbed, car-jacked and locked in boot while car set alight

Monday, March 19, 2007

A 34 year old obstetrician from Forestville on Sydney’s Northern Beaches has escaped after he was robbed, car-jacked and locked in the boot (trunk) of his BMW, which was set alight. Police say the doctor was locked in the boot while his car was set alight, but was allowed to escape before flames engulfed the vehicle.

The Doctor was believed to have been heading to The Mater Hospital in North Sydney when he was waiting at the intersection of West and Falcon Streets in Chatswood around 3:15AM AEDT when a small red sedan with two men claiming to be police officers signalled him to stop. After crossing the intersection, the doctor stopped his car at the side of the road.

The doctor was then approached by the two men and when he asked to see identification, one man grabbed the keys from his car’s ignition before they both pulled the doctor out of his vehicle, hit him in the stomach with a hammer and stole his mobile phone and wallet. The robbers also demanded his key and credit cards along with their access codes before locking him in the boot.

Police allege that the men drove to several locations to withdraw cash and buy things before driving to Carisbook Street in Linley Point at around 4 a.m. local time where they set the car alight with the doctor still in the boot.

Crime Manager of the Harbourside Local Area Command, Detective Inspector Houlahan said that the doctor then “heard a click in the boot area and he heard someone call out: ‘Get out of the car'”

“When he pushed the boot up he found his car engulfed in flames.”

Det. Insp. Houlahan said the doctor told police he did not unlock the boot himself, and it appeared the man’s captors unlocked it before fleeing.

Det Insp Houlahan said that the doctor appeared to be “very distraught” and tired after the ordeal, and wanted to get home and see his wife and two young daughters.

He could only provide police with a vague description of his captors, but said the men were both Caucasian males aged in their 20s, and that one of them was about six feet tall (183cm) with short blond hair and medium build said Det. Insp. Houlahan.

Credit Karma Free Credit Score Review

By Ryan Pauline

Nowadays, almost everyone is aware of just how important a credit score is. This is why more and more people are making sure to check their credit scores with the aim of improving it in preparation for a loan. Unfortunately, most people are detracted by the fact that most credit bureaus demand payment for a credit score. As a result, there is an endless supply of debtors who are looking for ways to check their credit ranking for free. This is where Credit Karma free credit score review comes in, a site which provides accurate results without spending a single cent.

Credit Karma

The site has become popular over the years not only because it provides what people want for absolutely nothing, but also because of the speed and accuracy of the results. Credit Karma gets its data from three reliable credit bureaus for added accuracy. At the same time, the website itself is well made and is very easy to use. In fact, some Credit Karma free credit score review rates it as one of the best sites to get credit ratings for absolutely nothing. The site runs with the help of advertisements, making the ‘no hidden charges’ deal possible. Credit Karma also offers a ‘no credit card’ service, allowing users to check their credit score without actually giving away credit card number information. Additionally, the scores are automatically compared or ranked in a larger scale, giving users the idea of how their ratings measure up with others.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OL_UyCAGduw[/youtube]

Drawbacks

In some of the Credit Karma free credit score review, users have complained that the site cannot find their credit history. The fact that Credit Karma also doesn’t use the FICO scoring system is a big disadvantage for most users. This is because most lending institutions utilize FICO to assess credit scores. As mentioned above, the service does not require a credit card to work. However, personal information is still required by the system for verification purposes as well as checking credit history against bureaus.

Getting a Good Credit Score

One great thing about Credit Karma is its credit score simulator. As most people know, there are certain factors that are used by creditors to determine how a person rates. With the use of the simulator, a user can change different variables and watch how these affect their credit score. Ultimately, the simulator allows debtors to see exactly how their different financial decisions would affect their score in the future.

Importance of Credit Scores

Although the Credit Karma free credit score review does not provide a perfect simulation of one’s credit ranking, it is a good way to get a glimpse of one’s financial situation. Contrary to what most people think, a bad credit score doesn’t prevent one from getting a loan. The problem is that the loan would be riddled with large interest rates to the point that it would be unreasonable. On the other hand, by getting and maintaining a good credit score, debtors have better chances of getting lower interest rates on their loans, thereby saving money in the long run.

Original Story
  • “Hotel development proposal could displace Buffalo, NY business owners” — Wikinews, February 17, 2006

Friday, February 17, 2006

Buffalo, New York —Savarino Construction Services Corp. has proposed a $7 million hotel project at the Forest and Elmwood Avenue intersection, according to The Buffalo News. The proposal calls for a 5-story, 45,000 square-foot 80-room hotel with underground parking for at least 50 vehicles, and 4,500 square-feet of retail space on the lower level.

Hans Mobius, the owner of the five properties to be purchased in the plan (1109 to 1121 Elmwood), reportedly signed a contract with Savarino to assemble the development.

“We saw a huge opportunity to bring something to the Elmwood Village that will make sense and bring a service that’s currently not available,” said Eva Hassett, vice president of Savarino. “Elmwood is such a wonderful place to eat, shop, walk and spend time. We believe this project will add to that vibrant environment.”

Some business owners in the area see it differently. Wikinews interviewed 2 of the 4 owners whose business’s would be demolished if the development goes through.

Nancy Pollina, of Don Apparel at 1119 Elmwood, who found out about the development only yesterday, said she is “utterly” against the proposal. Her apparel shop has stood at the same location for nearly 14 years. She has volunteered in the community, and helped create several gardens around bus shelters in the city, and served on Forever Elmwood Board for six years as head of Beautification. Patty Morris co-owns Don Apparel with Pollina.

“To say this is a good looking project, I want to say the emperor has no clothes. This [project] does not take into consideration the needs of the college students. I have been told by college students, these shops here, are the reason they leave the campus,” said Mrs. Pollina.

Buffalo State College is 500-feet from the intersection.

Michael Faust, the owner of Mondo Video said, “Well, I do not really want to get kicked out of here. The landlord was very open, and the deal he made with me when I moved in here was ‘the rent is cheap and I [the landlord] will not fix anything and that will not change.'” Faust said he first learned of the development plan, “about 48 hours ago. I found out on Tuesday when the Buffalo News called and asked for my opinion on this.” Faust has not said if he will make plans to relocate. “We have to see if this [house] is going to get knocked down first,” said Faust.

An “informational” meeting, where citizens can voice opinions and learn about the proposal, will be held on Tuesday February 21, 2006 at 5:00pm (eastern), at the Burchfield-Penney Art Center Gallery at Buffalo State College, Rockwell Hall.

Executive director of Forever Elmwood Corporation, Justin P. Azzarella would not comment on whether or not the organization supports the development, saying, “you will just have to come to the meeting.”

Forever Elmwood Corp. is designed to preserve and protect the unique and historic nature of Elmwood Avenue and its surrounding neighborhoods and encourage neighborhood commercial revitalization. The organization was founded in 1994.

Nearly two years ago, the Forever Elmwood Corp. assisted in the blocking of the demolition of the Edward Atwater house at 1089 Elmwood next to Pano’s Restaurant which is at 1081 Elmwood. Owner Pano Georgiadis wanted to expand his restaurant onto the property where the house now stands, but the Common Council denied his permit to demolish saying the house is a historical landmark and needs to be protected. Georgiadis, who has a bleeding ulcer, said that all the court cases landed him in the hospital. “I got a bleeding ulcer, and since then, I don’t care about this house anymore, or this city. I just go to work every day. I think [preservationists] are parasites,” said Georgiadis.

Georgiadis will not be attending Tuesday’s meeting saying, “I will be out of town.”

In 1995 Hans Mobius proposed a plan to develop a Walgreens, that was to be placed in the same location, but residents and business owners shot down the proposal. Walgreens eventually withdrew its request for a variance after pressure from the community.

11-year-old California girl charged for throwing stone in defense

Monday, July 18, 2005

An 11-year-old girl faces serious assault charges in California after casting a stone at a group of boys who were throwing water balloons at her. In April, Maribel Cuevas was apprehended by Fresno, California police and spent five days in a detention center after throwing the object at the group of boys who bombarded her with water balloons as she walked down the sidewalk. A 9-year-old boy was hit with the stone, and suffered a wound to his head requiring medical assistance.

Since then, Cuevas has spent one month under house arrest pending court. Cuevas’ lawyer, Richard Beshwate, told the BBC that “They [Fresno police] are treating her like a violent parole offender. It’s not a felony, it’s an 11-year-old acting like an 11-year-old.”

Fresno Police Sergeant Anthony Martinez told reporters: “We responded. We determined a felony assault had taken place and the officers took the actions that were necessary.” Cuevas is due back in court next month on felony assault charges.

The girl was placed in juvenile hall during her five-day detention, with only one 30-minute visit from her parents. She was then placed under a 30 day house arrest and required to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet. The house arrest allowed the girl to attend school.

Maribel, who knows very little English, said that the boy initiated the conflict — the boy also admitted as much.
