Buffalo, New York —Savarino Construction Services Corp. has proposed a $7 million hotel project at the Forest and Elmwood Avenue intersection, according to The Buffalo News. The proposal calls for a 5-story, 45,000 square-foot 80-room hotel with underground parking for at least 50 vehicles, and 4,500 square-feet of retail space on the lower level.

Hans Mobius, the owner of the five properties to be purchased in the plan (1109 to 1121 Elmwood), reportedly signed a contract with Savarino to assemble the development.

“We saw a huge opportunity to bring something to the Elmwood Village that will make sense and bring a service that’s currently not available,” said Eva Hassett, vice president of Savarino. “Elmwood is such a wonderful place to eat, shop, walk and spend time. We believe this project will add to that vibrant environment.”

Some business owners in the area see it differently. Wikinews interviewed 2 of the 4 owners whose business’s would be demolished if the development goes through.

Nancy Pollina, of Don Apparel at 1119 Elmwood, who found out about the development only yesterday, said she is “utterly” against the proposal. Her apparel shop has stood at the same location for nearly 14 years. She has volunteered in the community, and helped create several gardens around bus shelters in the city, and served on Forever Elmwood Board for six years as head of Beautification. Patty Morris co-owns Don Apparel with Pollina.

“To say this is a good looking project, I want to say the emperor has no clothes. This [project] does not take into consideration the needs of the college students. I have been told by college students, these shops here, are the reason they leave the campus,” said Mrs. Pollina.

Buffalo State College is 500-feet from the intersection.

Michael Faust, the owner of Mondo Video said, “Well, I do not really want to get kicked out of here. The landlord was very open, and the deal he made with me when I moved in here was ‘the rent is cheap and I [the landlord] will not fix anything and that will not change.'” Faust said he first learned of the development plan, “about 48 hours ago. I found out on Tuesday when the Buffalo News called and asked for my opinion on this.” Faust has not said if he will make plans to relocate. “We have to see if this [house] is going to get knocked down first,” said Faust.

An “informational” meeting, where citizens can voice opinions and learn about the proposal, will be held on Tuesday February 21, 2006 at 5:00pm (eastern), at the Burchfield-Penney Art Center Gallery at Buffalo State College, Rockwell Hall.

Executive director of Forever Elmwood Corporation, Justin P. Azzarella would not comment on whether or not the organization supports the development, saying, “you will just have to come to the meeting.”

Forever Elmwood Corp. is designed to preserve and protect the unique and historic nature of Elmwood Avenue and its surrounding neighborhoods and encourage neighborhood commercial revitalization. The organization was founded in 1994.

Nearly two years ago, the Forever Elmwood Corp. assisted in the blocking of the demolition of the Edward Atwater house at 1089 Elmwood next to Pano’s Restaurant which is at 1081 Elmwood. Owner Pano Georgiadis wanted to expand his restaurant onto the property where the house now stands, but the Common Council denied his permit to demolish saying the house is a historical landmark and needs to be protected. Georgiadis, who has a bleeding ulcer, said that all the court cases landed him in the hospital. “I got a bleeding ulcer, and since then, I don’t care about this house anymore, or this city. I just go to work every day. I think [preservationists] are parasites,” said Georgiadis.

Georgiadis will not be attending Tuesday’s meeting saying, “I will be out of town.”

In 1995 Hans Mobius proposed a plan to develop a Walgreens, that was to be placed in the same location, but residents and business owners shot down the proposal. Walgreens eventually withdrew its request for a variance after pressure from the community.

11-year-old California girl charged for throwing stone in defense

Monday, July 18, 2005

An 11-year-old girl faces serious assault charges in California after casting a stone at a group of boys who were throwing water balloons at her. In April, Maribel Cuevas was apprehended by Fresno, California police and spent five days in a detention center after throwing the object at the group of boys who bombarded her with water balloons as she walked down the sidewalk. A 9-year-old boy was hit with the stone, and suffered a wound to his head requiring medical assistance.

Since then, Cuevas has spent one month under house arrest pending court. Cuevas’ lawyer, Richard Beshwate, told the BBC that “They [Fresno police] are treating her like a violent parole offender. It’s not a felony, it’s an 11-year-old acting like an 11-year-old.”

Fresno Police Sergeant Anthony Martinez told reporters: “We responded. We determined a felony assault had taken place and the officers took the actions that were necessary.” Cuevas is due back in court next month on felony assault charges.

The girl was placed in juvenile hall during her five-day detention, with only one 30-minute visit from her parents. She was then placed under a 30 day house arrest and required to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet. The house arrest allowed the girl to attend school.

Maribel, who knows very little English, said that the boy initiated the conflict — the boy also admitted as much.

I’ll Have Another wins 2012 Preakness Stakes

I’ll Have Another wins 2012 Preakness Stakes

Monday, May 21, 2012

The placement for first and second place at the 2012 Preakness Stakes could have been a replay of the Kentucky Derby earlier this month as I’ll Have Another came in first with Bodemeister behind in second. In this race, Creative Cause finished third.

By winning the Kentucky Derby and the 137th Preakness Stakes, I’ll Have Another has a chance at winning the US Triple Crown of thoroughbred horse racing. The final race I’ll Have Another would have to win is the Belmont Stakes, which will be held on June 9.

I’ll Have Another was not favored to win the Preakness Stakes and his odds were set at 3-1. Bodemeister, who was the favorite at 2-1 odds, was the speed horse again as he led the field for most of the race just as he did at the Kentucky Derby. This time, Creative Cause was following close behind in second by the time the field of horses reached the far turn. Just as in the Kentucky Derby, I’ll Have Another pushed faster in the final leg of the race. However, the Preakness Stakes finish was closer with I’ll Have Another squeezing by the pacesetter at the very end to win the race in 1:56.9.

Mexican jockey Mario Gutierrez has won his last four races with I’ll Have Another. He gave I’ll Have Another the credit for the finish, “No one put him in this race. He put himself into the race,” he said. Gutierrez said all he had to do was signal to the horse that it was time to challenge Bodemeister and the horse did the rest.

The winning horse is owned by financier J. Paul Reddam and trained by Doug O’Neill.

The Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland was filled with a crowd of 121,309 to watch the Triple Crown hopeful. The last horse to win the Triple Crown was Affirmed in 1978.

Take Care Of Your Feet}

Submitted by: Katie Y. Brooks

Our feet carry us the whole day but we rarely give a thought to them. Most of us have daily skin care routines but only a few have a feet care routine. This is really sad as it is our feet that keep us moving every day. If we dont take good care of them sooner or later they will make their presence felt in an ungainly manner. One fine day you may realize you have unsightly feet which are killing with you pain.

Your hygiene can not be complete without the clean feet. When you dont wash your feet regularly they may end up smelly and become breeding grounds for bacteria and fungus. Get yourself a stiff bristle scrubber and scrub your feet thoroughly everyday. Wash them thoroughly. If you dont rinse your feet properly, the soap residue might cause irritation.

The best and the most simple way to keep your feet germ free and fresh is to soak them in lukewarm water at the end of every day. Do remember to scrub them first so as to remove the grime. This makes sure that you go to bed with clean feet. It also helps to remove the bacteria that you may have collected through the day. This is the minimum that you can do for your feet everyday but if you have the time then treat them through some great care.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHiz8D1nlxk[/youtube]

Be careful about your footwear. Hard or tight fitting footwear will cause painful corns and blisters. If you need to walk a lot during the day stick to comfortable shoes or may be even walking shoes. This is common sense and yet you frequently meet people who are suffering from feet problems due to their uncomfortable footwear.

Jus as you moisturize the rest of your body; you need to moisturize your feet. You may want special foot cream to keep you feet soft and beautiful. Your feet take a lot of toll throughout the day and deserve special care. Moisturize them well or you may soon end up with dry feet that may crack. In case you have cracked feet take good care as these can get infected easily. Take special care if you are diabetic as these cracks can easily lead to severe health problems. If you have a healthy skin but really dry feet you will need to lather them with a petroleum product before retiring to bed. Wear cotton socks after applying the petroleum product.

Once you have completed the night care routine for your feet with scrubbing, rinsing and moisturizing your feet should feel nice and comfortable. If they are still itching it could mean that you have a fungal infection like athletes feet. This fungal function is very irritating and can cause a lot of itching and burning sensations in your feet. You may want to use an over the counter anti-fungal cream. Regular topical applications should cure the problem.

Do not forget your toe nails. Clean them and trim carefully. Cut straight across and keep them short to avoid injuries or ingrown nails. Take care of your feet at night so that they may take care of you through the day.

Honda Civic tops Canada’s list of most stolen cars

Honda Civic tops Canada’s list of most stolen cars

Wednesday, November 22, 2006

The 1999 and 2000 year model Honda Civic SiR tops the list of Canada’s most stolen cars.

Consumer popularity also assures the cars will be popular with thieves. Its the second year in a row the Honda SiR has topped the list.

Rick Dubin Vice President of Investigations for the Insurance Bureau of Canada said “The Civics are easy targets.”

Dubin said that once stolen, the cars are most often sold to “chop shops” where thieves completely dismantle the vehicles. The automobile’s individual parts are worth more than the entire car.

The sheer numbers of the cars and their lack of theft deterrent systems make them thieves’ preferred choices.

1999 and 2000 Honda Civics do not come with an electronic immobilizer, however all Hondas from 2001 and onward are equipped with an immobilizer. Immobilizers will be mandatory on all new cars sold beginning September 2007. The devices enable an engine computer to recognize an electronic code in the key. If the code in the key and the engine don’t match exactly, the vehicle can’t be started.

In third place was the 2004 Subaru Impreza, while the 1999 Acura Integra came in fourth, with the 1994 Honda Civic rounding out the top five.

In sixth place, the 1998 Acura Integra, and the 1993 Dodge Shadow completed seventh.

When asked why early model vehicles are selected, he said that, “auto thieves continue to find it easier to steal older vehicles lacking an IBC-approved immobilizer. We’ve seen this trend developing for several years, and these results confirm it.”

Another Honda automobile, the 1996 year model Civic filled eighth place, with the 2000 German Audi TT Quattro in ninth.

The American 1996 Chevrolet/GMC Blazer rounded out the top ten.

None of the above cars had an electronic immobilizer.

Four people have been arrested on terrorism charges in Islington, London, England, after a suspected petrol bombing on the house of Martin Rynja, owner of book publishing company Gibson Square.

Should books that could be considered offensive to some religions still be published?
Add or view comments

His company recently sparked controversy after buying the rights to publish The Jewel of Medina, a work of fiction by Sherry Jones depicting the Muslim prophet Muhammad and his child bride, Aisha.

The bombing, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning, led to the evacuation of the £2.5 million property in Lonsdale Square. Three men, aged 22, 30 and 40, were arrested at 2:25am BST by armed officers, two in Lonsdale Square, and one after being stopped near Angel tube station.

Police comments suggested that the trio had been under surveillance, and that they had advance knowledge of the plot and simply waited for the arsonists to strike, before arresting them.

On Saturday, a woman was arrested for obstructing police during their searches of four addresses – two in Walthamstow, and two in Ilford and Forest Gate.

Speaking earlier this month, Mr Rynja said that “The Jewel of Medina has become an important barometer of our time. As an independent publishing company, we feel strongly that we should not be afraid of the consequences of debate.” Ms Jones commented that she did not intend for her novel to be offensive to Islam. She noted that she “[has] deliberately and consciously written respectfully about Islam and Muhammad.” She “envisaged that [her] book would be a bridge builder” between Islam and the western world.

Daughter of Yuko Ikeda kidnapped to ransom in Tokyo; freed 13 hours later

Tuesday, June 27, 2006

Ikeda Kanako, a 21-year-old senior student of the Meiji Gakuin University and the first daughter of celebrity surgeon Yuko Ikeda, was kidnapped at about 1225 (UTC+9), June 26, 2006, in Shibuya, Tokyo.

A bullet was fired and one officer slightly cut when police stormed a Kawasaki apartment to rescue the girl.

Kanako was dressed in a white light half-sleeved cardigan, blue jeans with a bistre belt made of leather, a spring green camisole and carried a bag of Vuitton when she was abducted at a bus stop.

She was found unharmed 13 hours later by Japanese police at a condominium located in Nakahara-ku, Kawasaki, Kanagawa. The young woman’s make-up was not disordered; Kanako’s long brown fringe was not disheveled at all and she was wearing what she had been when she was kidnapped.

The kidnapping of Kanako was a big story in Japanese media in June, 2006. The story appeared in many newspapers as the front-page news on June 27, 2006.

Kanako and her kidnappers had been in touch with her mother using Kanako’s mobile phone. The effort to free her was helped greatly by a woman who witnessed the moment Kanako was taken; she wrote down the license plate of the van and other details.

Police traced mobile phone calls and were able to locate the van in Kawasaki where they detained two of the kidnappers as they went shopping.

One conspirator Li Yong, 29, from China, led the policemen to the apartment and tricked Kaneo Ito, 49, from Japan, to open the door. Ito managed to discharge one bullet before being restrained by an assistant police inspector, the first man in the room.

The other man involved in the kidnap of Kanako was Choi Gi Ho, 54, from South Korea. Kanato was freed unharmed.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department arrested three men on suspicion of conspiring to kidnap a woman and hold her to a reported 300 million yen ransom.

Chess champion is “Fritzed” by computer

Tuesday, December 5, 2006

Russian chess grandmaster, Vladimir Kramnik lost the final match of his man versus machine match against the Deep Fritz chess program. The six game match in Bonn, Germany had a final result of 4-2 for the German-developed chess program which runs on readily available computer hardware.

The first match which concluded on November 25 was a draw, Kramnik lost the second game to the computer with some indications that he overlooked a mate in one win. Third through fifth matches were all draws.

Kramnik, whilst the current world chess champion, is actually ranked third in the world. A contributory factor in this is his health problems. The world champion suffers from a rare form of arthritis which makes sitting playing in tournaments extremely painful for him.

Folate Plays A Key Role In Anti Aging Cognitive Techniques

By Connie Limon

Medical researchers have proven that high levels of folate can slow the cognitive decline usually seen as people age. This research was presented at the US-based Alzheimer’s Association’s first conference on prevention of dementia. Folate is definitely instrumental in anti-aging techniques for the brain.

The research suggested that otherwise healthy people can slow declining brain function by taking double the recommended daily dose of folate.

Scientists studied men and women 50-75 years of age taking 800 mcg of folate a day over a three year period. They found the group scored much better in cognitive tests than their peers who took the placebo. The supplement users also scored higher on memory tests as much as 5.5 years younger than their chronological age.

The study is the first to convincingly show folate can slow cognitive decline and plays a key role in anti-aging techniques for cognitive functioning. Since the study involved healthy older people and not people with Alzheimer’s symptoms, it does not tell us if folate might ward off that disease. This is an important question still unanswered.

Earlier studies suggested folate combined with other B vitamins can reduce levels of homocysteine, which is an amino acid thought to be one of the causes for onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

Researchers think we ought to be more conscious about the health of our brain very much in the same way we think about the health of our heart. Alzheimer’s disease begins many, many years before symptoms appear.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1JeEXP717T0[/youtube]

The researchers of this study say it is not clear how folate works to protect the brain. It might be that it lowers inflammation or plays a role in expression of dementia-related genes.

Oranges, strawberries, dark green leafy vegetables and beans are good sources of folate to include in a daily anti-aging diet. Folate is also added to cereal and flour products in the United States

.

The recommended daily dose of folate in the United States is 400 micrograms. Doctors have long advised women of childbearing age to take folate supplements to ensure they get an adequate daily dose.

This new research adds to the mounting evidence that an anti-aging diet higher in folate provides protection against a variety of diseases. For a long time now, scientists have felt folate plays a role in dementia. Previous studies show people with low folate levels are more at risk for heart disease and decreased cognitive functioning.

Research also now suggests there are anti-aging ways to protect the brain against age-related memory losses and Alzheimer’s disease. There are classes being offered by the Alzheimer’s Association to teach people techniques to protect the brain. Some of those techniques include:

–Exercise the brain: In youth, exercise for the brain is acquiring good education. As a person begins to age, excellent anti-aging brain exercises include working crossword puzzles, learning to play an instrument or the game of chess and taking classes helps to exercise the brain.

–Social stimulation helps prevent decreased cognitive function

–Physical activity: Having a bad memory has been linked to heart disease and diabetes due to the clogged arteries that slow blood flow to the brain. Exercise is helpful to all these functions.

–Experts recommend doing something mentally, physically and socially stimulating all at the same time. An example would be coaching your child’s ball team or taking a dance class.

–A heart healthy anti-aging diet is also good for brain healthy anti-aging.
