University of Alberta to buy Hudson’s Bay Building

Friday, July 8, 2005

The University of Alberta is set to expand into the heart of Edmonton’s downtown with plans now in place to purchase the aging Hudson’s Bay building on Jasper Avenue between 102nd Street and 103rd Street. The deal, which is yet to be approved by the University’s Board of Governors, could result in students starting classes in the building as early as September 2006.

The building has been a huge vacancy in the downtown core, with only the broadcasting corporation CHUM Limited using any space. University of Alberta President Indira Samarasekera has said there are no plans to ask the company, which owns 91.7 The Bounce and A-Channel to move.

The deal would also solve the University’s space crunch. The total University population is growing much faster than the number of facilities required to support it, so expanding beyond the current campus makes sense. Establishing a presence downtown will also help the University and it’s many spin off companies.

The University has not yet decided how the project would be funded, but is currently looking at a number of options, including partnerships with all three levels of government.

Lockdown at Missouri university lifted as police apprehend suspected gunman

Friday, May 13, 2011

A suspected gunman has been taken into custody today after a university in Missouri, U.S. was locked down when he entered the campus with an AK-47 assault rifle. Cody Nathaniel Willcoxon reportedly arrived at Missouri University of Science and Technology around 9:00 a.m. CDT (14:00 UTC) Thursday morning after shooting at officers in a police chase.

Officials say no one has been injured after Willcoxon—described as a Caucasian male with sandy blonde hair—entered McNutt Hall, a building on the campus. He had earlier escaped from police custody at Fort Leonard Wood while being questioned by military police when trying to enter the property and was then pursued by authorities along Interstate 44. The gunman began shooting at police while driving, exiting the interstate at Rolla, Missouri. Willcoxon reportedly stopped near a university building and fled on foot, before stealing a Ford Taurus from a residence near the school.

No shots were fired on campus, say authorities, and no one was injured. The school sent emergency alerts to its students and faculty as a result of the incident. Law enforcement officials told students to stay inside their buildings until the lockdown was lifted and were not allowing anyone to enter the campus. Police were seen retrieving several items, including weapons, from a vehicle on the school campus.

Willcoxon was apprehended by authorities around 1:00 p.m. CDT and the lockdown was subsequently lifted.

How To Properly Fix Model Toy Trains

Are you in a place where you want to properly care for your Model Toy Trains? If you are someone who is a big fan of Little Toy Trains, Antique Toy Trains or Electric Toy Trains, you will find that learning appropriate care and figuring out what your options are going to be when it comes to keeping your trains running in tip top shape is something that you need to think about. While you could take your Model Toy Trains to a specialist every time that they start running kind of rough, you will find that you will be going to the specialist a lot! What a lot of Model Toy Train enthusiasts don’t know, however, is that there is a lot that you can do from your own home, and that simply keeping these things in mind will help you a great deal. The first thing that you should always take care of is the track and the wheels. Inspect them on a regular basis and make sure that if you see any rust that you use sandpaper to take them out as soon as possible. While of course you want to be careful you may also find that you are dealing with some severe build up. In this case, take a small knife that you can easily control and scratch off the worst of it. Rust remover can also be used on it. After you have taken the worst of the rust off, use a soft cloth with a light oil spray on it and rub the the track down. This will let you buff the track up quite nicely. You may also find that when you are working with Model Toy Trains that you are finding a greenish or a white build up on some of the metal parts. While this is unattractive and alarming if you have never seen it before, remember that this is just oxidation. All that you really need to do when this comes up is to soak the track in an oxidation remover for a few minutes and then finish off the treatment with an easy oil spray and a quick buffing.Remember that steel wool, while it can take things off fast, you should use it very sparingly if at all. When you use steel wool, there is good chance that small steel particles will deposit on your track. As your train goes over it, it can very easily pick it up and then over time ruin the smoothness with which your train runs. Also keep in mind that steel wool is quite harsh, and that though you might be able to take the rust off the train, you may end up taking some of the finish off with it as well. Take some time and really consider what your options are going to be and what you can do to make sure that you are getting one of the Model Toy Trains that you need. Caring for Classic Toy Trains is really one of the joys of owning it, so take some time and really consider what your options are going to be as you look towards getting the kind of train that you want!

UK company “seriously considering” GPS tracking devices in school uniforms

Saturday, August 25, 2007

The leading supplier of school uniforms in the United Kingdom, Lancashire-based manufacturer Trutex, has announced it is “seriously considering” including GPS tracking devices in future ranges of its uniform products after conducting an online survey of both parents and children.

“As a direct result of the survey, we are now seriously considering incorporating a [tracking] device into future ranges” said Trutex marketing director Clare Rix.

The survey questioned 809 parents and 444 children aged nine to 16. It showed that 44% of parents were worried about the safety of pre-teen children, and 59% wanted tracking devices installed in school apparel. 39% of children aged nine to 12 were prepared to wear clothing with tracking devices in them, while teenagers were notably less enthusiastic and more wary of what Trutex has admitted they see as a “big brother” concept.

However, Trutex has claimed the tracking devices would bring about worthwhile benefits, including being a valuable resource for parents who wanted to keep a close eye on where their children were at all times.

“As well as being a safety net for parents, there could be real benefits for schools who could keep a closer track on the whereabouts of their pupils, potentially reducing truancy levels” says Rix.

Each year, Trutex supplies 1 million blouses, 1.1 million shirts, 250,000 pairs of trousers, 20,000 blazers, 60,000 skirts and 110,000 pieces of knitwear to the UK.

It is not the first company to manufacture school uniforms with a central focus on child safety; last week Essex firm BladeRunner revealed it was selling stab-proof school blazers to parents concerned about violence against their children. The blazers were outfitted with Kevlar, a synthetic fibre used in body armour. It has already received orders internationally, including Australia.

If the Trutex tracking devices go ahead, it is unclear where in the uniform they will be located.

Keep in mind that your united states vehicle liability insurance is not valid in Mexico, nor is most collision and comprehensive coverage issued by US corporations. Yes, some Mastercard firms will cover your transport for Collision and complete if you use their card. But you need culpability insurance from a Mexican car insurance carrier.

Mexican law claims that only firms approved in Mexico can supply “civil culpability” coverage that is recognized by the legal system of Mexico. Though a few US insurance companies will go forward and extend physical damage coverage while you are driving in Mexico, they can not and don’t provide Mexican liability insurance. You’ve got to have a Mexican car insurance company do this. If you are involved in an accident, you may be arrested by the authorities until the problem can be determined.

If you don’t have Mexican responsibility insurance and you are caught up in an accident, apart from potentially being arrested in the local Mexican jail, you may be restricted from leaving Mexico, and this is regardless of the wounds or medical attention you or your folks may require. Drivers may also face criminal charges if wounds or damages are serious.

regardless of what coverage you select, make sure that the policy includes legal aid coverage. This is positively useful if you’re mixed up in an accident. If you have got an accident involving injuries you’ll need legal help. In such cases, it’s common that the vehicle be impounded till fault is determined. Your counsel will look after your legal rights and organize for a bond, and will look after your vehicle so it gets corrected and returned to you as smartly as practicable.

thus it’s vital to purchase enough coverage to last the length of your trip. And always keep a copy of your policy with you. If your car is taken and your policy is inside, you may not be repaid. Report all accidents while in Mexico. Insurers in most cases will not pay comments that are filed after someone leaves the country. These are few responsibilities as a vehicle owner because knowing these details will give you the security while driving.

do not forget that Mexican car insurance is vital to protect yourself, your family and others. It is inexpensive and takes very little time, if fact you may even purchase it online in a few short minuet, and the one time you actually need it, you will notice how vital insurance is to you.

UK retailers MFI and Woolworths collapse

UK retailers MFI and Woolworths collapse

Friday, November 28, 2008

Two major retail chains in the United Kingdom — general retailer Woolworths Group and furniture vendor MFI Group — have entered administration. Entertainment UK — which distributes videos and DVDs to retailers and are owned by Woolworths — have also entered administration.

“The boards of Woolworths PLC and Entertainment UK Ltd have concluded that there is no longer any prospect of those businesses being able to operate as a going concern,” said a Woolworths statement.

Woolworths, who sells household goods, music and other items, owns 815 stores nationwide, and MFI owns 111. MFI CEO Gary Favell said he had “secured the future of the MFI business” in September when he led a management buyout, but cracks rapidly appeared. Favell revealed administrator Kroll were to take control of the property division and half the stores were surrendered to the administrators. He also asked landlords to grant a three-month period of no rent for the ‘new’ MFI, which only some agreed to, leaving Kroll to seek payment for the rest.

Now the entirety of MFI is in administration, with MCR as the administrator. “Closing down sales” have been announced by MCR. Analysts predict that while in the short term consumer confidence will be damaged by the collapse, in the middle term it will help the situation as excess competition and capacity are removed. MFI employs 1,500 people.

The administrators for Woolworths and Entertainment UK are consultancy firm Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu. “In the last 24 hours we have received expressions of interest from a number of parties for both the retail and wholesale businesses,” said Deloitte partner Dan Butters. “We are working hard to ensure that any sale of the business, in whole or part, will preserve jobs.” The 25,000 Woolworths employees have their positions safe until Christmas.

Shares in Woolworths have been suspended at just over a penny each. The firm also owns 2Entertain, a DVD publishing joint venture with BBC Worldwide, and book wholesalers Bertram Books. Both are currently operating as usual, although Woolworths is seeking to sell 40% of 2Entertain to the BBC.

“The important thing is in the long run that employees in this company – where the businesses and the shops are not going to stay open in the longer term – can get other jobs quickly,” Prime Minister Gordon Brown said. “That’s why we’re going to move in immediately to give advice to employees.”

US adds 173,000 jobs in August; unemployment rate drops to seven year low

US adds 173,000 jobs in August; unemployment rate drops to seven year low

Monday, September 7, 2015

The US economy added 173,000 jobs in August, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Friday. The unemployment rate fell from 5.3 to 5.1 percent, the lowest since April 2008.

Although August job gains were lower than most economists forecast, job growth numbers for June and July were revised upwards by a combined 44,000. Average job gains over the past three months stand at 221,000, compared to March-May’s 189,000 monthly average. Over the past twelve months, job growth has averaged 247,000 per month.

Average hourly earnings rose 0.3 percent, or 8 cents, marking the largest increase in earnings in seven months. Hourly earnings had risen by 6 cents in July. Wages have risen by 2.2 percent over the past year.

Job growth in August was primarily concentrated in the health care and social assistance, financial activities, and professional and business services sectors. Those three areas of the economy added a combined 108,000 jobs. Food service and drinking places employment increased by 26,000 over the month, and other economic sectors saw employment hold steady. Manufacturing, on the other hand, saw employment decline by 17,000 in August. A stronger dollar and worldwide economic weakness make US exports less desirable, leading to a flattening in manufacturing employment so far this year after steadily rising in the early years of the US economic recovery.

The solid overall job gains led analysts to slightly raise expectations for a decision by the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates this month. Investors raised the likelihood of a September rate increase from 26 percent before the jobs report to 30 percent, and stocks dropped by over one percent on Friday. “The payrolls data is certainly good enough to allow for a Fed rate hike in September,” said Deutsche Bank’s head of currency strategy, Alan Ruskin. “The big question is still whether financial market volatility will scupper the plans.”

“This is the first time the market has looked at a Fed meeting and really has no idea what the Fed is going to do,” said Mark Kepner, a New Jersey equity trader with Themis Trading. “Right now you’re looking at the overall uncertainty and that’s what’s hanging on the market. I don’t think this number in and of itself changes how somebody’s going to vote.”

New Zealand suicide rate decreases

New Zealand suicide rate decreases

Tuesday, August 1, 2006

A new report released by the New Zealand Ministry of Health titled “Suicide Trends” shows that the suicide rate in New Zealand has decreased 15% since its peak in the late 1990’s, but the attempted suicide rate is increasing.

There were 12 deaths per 100,000 people between 1983-’85. 16.7 deaths per 100,000 people between 1996-’98. And 14.2 deaths per 100,000 people between 2001-’03. But there were 73.1 attempted suicides per 100,000 people between 1995-’97 compared to 82.5 in 2002-’04.

Jim Anderton, Associate Health Minister, said “It provides some comfort to see the long-term trend still appears to be heading in the right direction, with a continued decline or levelling off of self-inflicted deaths but there is no room for complacency.”

The suicide report also shows that:

The New Zealand Government has put NZ$10.3 million towards direct suicide prevention. New Zealand News agencies are banned by law from reporting suicide deaths.

Las Vegas Day Trips Picking Between Grand Canyon Skywalk And The South Rim

By Kelly Kirbee

Picking out whether to visit the Skywalk or Grand Canyon National Park while staying in Las Vegas? That’s a tough one. Both attractions are worth the trip. However, there are a few logistical and budgetary differences between the two that can help solve the dilemma for you.

HOW MUCH TIME DOES IT TAKE?

This is a big issue for a lot of people. It takes a bus 2.5 hours to reach Grand Canyon West and 5.5 hours to reach the South Rim. It takes a helicopter 45 minutes and an airplane 25 minutes to reach the West Rim, respectively. It takes an airplane 45 minutes to fly to the South Rim; there are no direct helicopter flights. Be ready to spend a full day on trips to the West Rim. South Rim airplane trips need a full day, too, while bus tours average about 15 hours.

HOW FAR IS IT?

The one-way driving distance from Las Vegas to the West Rim is 128 miles and 279 miles to the South Rim. Both are relatively long trips. Fortunately, today’s motor coach has all the amenities, including plush seats and a clean bathroom. There are also a number of stops where you can stretch your legs (including Hoover Dam).

WHAT’S THERE TO DO?

Each rim has distinct things to do. The West Rim is famous for its man-made attractions while the South Rim is praised for its incredible natural beauty. Additionally, while there are visitor facilities at the West Rim, the ones at South Rim are more developed. Here’s a breakdown:

South Rim:

View Points

This area of the Canyon is loaded with fantastic viewing spots. The most famous are Mather Point, Yavapai Observation Station, Yaki Point, Hermit’s Rest and more. All can be reached via the Park’s excellent free shuttle bus system.

Restaurants

Dining opportunities vary from casual to highbrow laid-back. The largest, heartiest portions are served at the Bright Angel Restaurant. For cafeteria-style, head to Maswick Lodge. Or polish up your shoes and enjoy a sumptuous dinner in the El Tovar dining room. If you are looking for a quick bite, try the snack bar behind the Lodge. There’s a full-sized supermarket near Mather Campground.

Souvenir Shopping

This is a South Rim “must-do.” For Native American handicrafts, it’s the Hopi House. Go to Verkamp’s or Kolb Studio for books, DVDs, and maps. The gift shop within the Bright Angel Lodge is the place for t-shirts, water bottles, key chains, and postcards.

West Rim (Grand Canyon Skywalk):

Skywalk

The Glass Bridge is now Las Vegas’ hottest “off-Strip” attraction. Since opening to the public in 2007, more than one million people have experienced the Bridge. It’s a fantastic structure: Manufactured from special glass, it extends 70 feet over the Canyon, wherein you are suspended 4,000 feet above the Colorado River.

Hualapai Ranch

This is truly a special place. It features a Wild West town where gunfights are staged. Other cowboy “games” include axe and hay bale throwing. You get saddle up and go horseback riding or participate in a cattle drive. Overnight lodging is available.

Lookouts

Eagle Point is the main lookout for the West Rim. Spectacular views are to be had. Be warned – There’s no guardrail. The region includes an Indian village and outdoor amphitheater for talks on local culture, flora, and fauna.

Gift Shops/Food

Grand Canyon West is a relatively new development of the Hualapai Indian Tribe. The complex that services the Skywalk is the hub of activity and includes a gift shop (this is where you pick up your Skywalk souvenir photos) and snack bar. The Tribe’s future plans for the area include hotels and restaurants.

WEATHER

The South Rim, elevation 7,000 feet, is 1,500 feet higher than the West Rim, so expect cooler temperatures. Other than that, both areas are subject to extreme weather. Here’s a quick look at annual temperatures for both rims:

South Rim

Elevation is 7,000 feet

Jan. – March

Average high temperature: 45 degrees. Average low: 21 degrees.

April – June

Average high temperature: 69 degrees. Average low: 39 degrees.

July – Sept.:

Average high temperature: 82 degrees. Average low: 52 degrees.

Oct. – Dec.:

Average high temperature: 52 degrees. Average low: 27 degrees.

West Rim/Skywalk

Elevation is 4,700 feet.

Jan. – March

Average high temperature: 70 degrees. Average low: 43 degrees.

April – June

Average high temperature: 96 degrees. Average low: 65 degrees.

July – Sept.:

Average high temperature: 105 degrees. Average low: 76 degrees.

Oct. – Dec.

Average high temperature: 76 degrees. Average low: 46 degrees.

WHAT TO WEAR & BRING

Warm layers in the winter and wind-resistant, cool clothing in the summer. Expect winter snow at the South Rim and wear pants, shoes and a jacket (it’s not uncommon to see people in shorts!). During the summer, always bring a water bottle and plenty of sunscreen.

PRICE

Remarkably, tour prices to the rims are similar. West rim bus tours start under $100 and South Rim tours around $80. Helicopter tours to the Skywalk start at $200. West Rim airplane tours start at $105 and South Rim ones at $190 (this particular tour is a total bargain). Try to purchase an all-inclusive tour that includes Skywalk admission, which, if bought separately, will run you $29.95 per person.

WRAP UP

The Rims of the Grand Canyon are wondrous places. It would be great if there was a Las Vegas-Grand Canyon tour that did both but there isn’t (if there were, it would be a two-day trip). However, the Rims are different enough in terms of tour time, price, and attractions that you can find the trip that’s right for you.
