Insurance Continuing Education Courses Are Now Available Online

Time is a huge factor for working professionals. Between their jobs, family, and extracurricular activities they tend to keep very busy. Adding school on top of their already busy schedule is a huge commitment. There is a lot to consider when applying to different graduate programs. One must take everything into consideration and choose the best program for them. Since online education has become very popular with adult students we decided to talk about what one should expect when enrolling in an online class. We will take you through a week of an online student.

Going back to school can be a daunting task. Most people already have enough going on in their lives, let alone adding an extra 20 hours a week for education. Contrary to popular belief, online classes tend to be more difficult to most people who have done both online and traditional classes. Students state online classes need more attention, dedication, and motivation to be successful in them. They argue there is no one telling you when to log in and complete your assignments so it is easier to forget about them. In a traditional class you have to attend class at least once a week, sometimes more. The professor requires you to show up for their lecture or you lose participation points. In an online course everything is virtual-based, including your classmates and professors. You typically never meet any of them. So what is the motivation to do well in your group work if you are never going to have to answer to your group face-to-face? This is just one dilemma an online student faces.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRbp-dd1QvM[/youtube]

Where you are in your life could have an influence in your choice. Are you a professional working 40+ hours a week or a new college student attending classes full-time? This could impact whether you choose an online or on-campus program. Also, what do you want your degree in? Can you find a local school that is known for its business programs or will you have to take online classes or relocate? These are tough questions to answer. Heavy research is typically involved when finding the best school that fits all of your needs.

Continuing your education is very important. It should not matter what the economy is doing. It is a best practice to be as up to date as possible on industry trends when making decisions for your company. You want to make an informed decision as opposed to an uninformed decision. The best part is, many employers will pay for an online education these days. You may have to commit to them for 1-2 years after completing the degree, but a free education is well worth it. You take the class, receive a passing grade; and then your company reimburses you for your tuition fees. It s that easy. To find out what internet courses qualify for tuition reimbursement, contact your human resources department.

During the past 5-10 years online education has dramatically increased in enrollment. There are now more programs available to online students than ever before. Whether someone is looking for a Bachelor s Degree in Nursing or a Master s Degree in Engineering, there is a school that offer s it online. Adults in particular, are very comfortable using the internet on a day to day basis. They typically use it at work or with their children. So doing their education over the internet is no big deal for them. It is more convenient than having to travel to a physical campus to attend class. If you are trying to balance your family, job, and school, this is a huge factor when deciding how to complete your degree. The internet is a great tool that has evolved and developed over the past 20 years. Not only can you do your degree online; you can do all of your research as well. It is a great tool for everyone to use.

Restrictions imposed in China textile trade with U.S.

Saturday, May 21, 2005

In an effort to ease complaints by the U.S. and Europe about a heavy influx of low priced Chinese goods, China will raise export tariffs on 74 categories of textile products in June. This follows plans from the U.S. to impose quotas on Chinese textiles and clothing.

Products likely to see an increase from the Chinese move include synthetic fiber shirts, trousers, knit shirts and blouses, cotton shirts, and combined cotton yarn. Last week, similar restrictions were imposed by the U.S. on cotton trousers, knit shirts, and underwear. Currently, a 2.5 cent charge per item is imposed; the new tariff will raise this to the equivalent of 12 cents per piece now. While this is a fourfold increase, it is not expected to affect consumer prices. Because of this, some doubt the tariff will have any effect on correcting the trade imbalance.

This move is in response to U.S. trade quotas imposed due to concerns that increased Chinese goods would put U.S. textile manufacturers out of business. According to Auggie Tantillo, executive director of the American Manufacturing Trade Action Coalition, a textile industry group in the U.S., the move will preserve 10,000 U.S. jobs. The new U.S. trade quota will limit the growth of Chinese textile imports to 7.5 percent compared with shipments over the past year.

Prior to January 1, a global quota system helped regulate the trade. With the quota system gone, fears have arisen that a flood of Chinese goods could undercut U.S. competitiveness in the market. China is able to market its goods cheaply due to an artificially weak yuan. The U.S. Treasury criticized the China yuan policy as “highly distortionary”, posing a major risk to China’s economy itself and to global economic growth. They challenged China to revalue its currency to bring it to a level they believe will allow fairer competition between global manufacturers.

China has disputed the charges of the U.S. Treasury. Chinese Commerce Minister Bo Xilai said, “I believe they are not reasonable”.

Laura Jones, a representative of large retailers, also criticized the move, saying “These restrictions on imports from China will do absolutely nothing to help the U.S. textile industry — and the government knows it.”

China has seen a boom in economic growth in recent years due to growing trade surpluses with the West, but economists worry that the trade gap will cause longer term global economic problems. China’s textile and apparel exports are the most noteworthy example, with exports up over 1,000 percent in some categories this year and the rapid loss of marketshare and jobs by U.S. textile manufacturers.

Beginning in 1978, the Chinese economy has been transforming from a Soviet-style centrally planned economy to more of a free market style system, under the rigid political control of Communist Party of China.

To this end, the government has leveraged foreign trade to stimulate economic growth. The result has been a fourfold increase in GDP, making China the sixth largest economy in the world. By 2012 the People’s Republic of China may have the highest GDP in the world.

According to U.S. statistics, from 1999 to 2004 China’s trade surplus with the U.S. doubled to $170 billion. Wal-Mart is China’s seventh largest export partner, just ahead of the United Kingdom.

However, the gains from their “socialist market economy” have not been without problems. The Chinese leadership has often experienced the worst results of socialism and capitalism: bureaucracy, lassitude, corruption, and inflation. Inflation rates have been an on-going challenge, reaching as high as 17% in 1995.

Environmental deterioration is a longer-term threat to economic growth. In 1998, the World Health Organization reported that China had seven of the 10 most-polluted cities on Earth. Another concern among some economists is that China’s economy is over-heating, and due to its global economic expansion this could have major repercussions among other nations.

Typically, wages have been low and working conditions poor, with workers living in restrictive dormitories and working at boring factory jobs. However, recent labor shortages have started improving conditions, and raising the minimum wage towards the equivalent of 100-150 US dollars per month. The labor shortages are in part a result of a demographic trend caused by strict family planning.

Suspected US drone attack kills eight in Pakistan

Friday, November 20, 2009

Pakistani officials said that a suspected US drone attack has killed at least eight people today, including foreign militants, in the country’s northwest.

The officials said that two missiles were fired at a compound being used by suspected Taliban militants in Mir Ali village, in North Waziristan, a region on the Afghanistan-border that is said to be a militant stronghold.

At least eight people were killed in the drone attack.

“At least eight people were killed in the drone attack. A compound used by militants was targeted,” said an unnamed official to the Agence France-Presse (AFP) news agency.

Police official Mohammad Haroon said to the Reuters news agency that “it was a remote-controlled bomb. Two policemen died on the spot, while a third has succumbed to his injuries a short while ago.”

US military officials generally do not confirm attacks such as these, but its armed forces and Central Intelligence Agency employees in Afghanistan are the only forces that deploy pilotless drones in the region.

At least 65 similar drone strikes have killed about 625 people in Pakistan since August of last year, according to AFP.

Major ‘Spiritual Life of College Students’ study released by UCLA

Thursday, April 14, 2005

Results of the second phase in an ongoing major study of the spiritual lives of college students was released Wednesday, April 13 by a research center at UCLA. The study is a groundbreaking attempt to gain insight into the spiritual lives and concerns of students and improve how faculties and administrators at US colleges and universities address this part of their students’ lives.

The study, named The Spiritual Life of College Students, was conducted by the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI), a research center of higher education in the United States. HERI is based in the Graduate School of Education & Information Studies (GSE&IS) at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

Original Story
  • “Hotel development proposal could displace Buffalo, NY business owners” — Wikinews, February 17, 2006

Friday, February 17, 2006

Buffalo, New York —Savarino Construction Services Corp. has proposed a $7 million hotel project at the Forest and Elmwood Avenue intersection, according to The Buffalo News. The proposal calls for a 5-story, 45,000 square-foot 80-room hotel with underground parking for at least 50 vehicles, and 4,500 square-feet of retail space on the lower level.

Hans Mobius, the owner of the five properties to be purchased in the plan (1109 to 1121 Elmwood), reportedly signed a contract with Savarino to assemble the development.

“We saw a huge opportunity to bring something to the Elmwood Village that will make sense and bring a service that’s currently not available,” said Eva Hassett, vice president of Savarino. “Elmwood is such a wonderful place to eat, shop, walk and spend time. We believe this project will add to that vibrant environment.”

Some business owners in the area see it differently. Wikinews interviewed 2 of the 4 owners whose business’s would be demolished if the development goes through.

Nancy Pollina, of Don Apparel at 1119 Elmwood, who found out about the development only yesterday, said she is “utterly” against the proposal. Her apparel shop has stood at the same location for nearly 14 years. She has volunteered in the community, and helped create several gardens around bus shelters in the city, and served on Forever Elmwood Board for six years as head of Beautification. Patty Morris co-owns Don Apparel with Pollina.

“To say this is a good looking project, I want to say the emperor has no clothes. This [project] does not take into consideration the needs of the college students. I have been told by college students, these shops here, are the reason they leave the campus,” said Mrs. Pollina.

Buffalo State College is 500-feet from the intersection.

Michael Faust, the owner of Mondo Video said, “Well, I do not really want to get kicked out of here. The landlord was very open, and the deal he made with me when I moved in here was ‘the rent is cheap and I [the landlord] will not fix anything and that will not change.'” Faust said he first learned of the development plan, “about 48 hours ago. I found out on Tuesday when the Buffalo News called and asked for my opinion on this.” Faust has not said if he will make plans to relocate. “We have to see if this [house] is going to get knocked down first,” said Faust.

An “informational” meeting, where citizens can voice opinions and learn about the proposal, will be held on Tuesday February 21, 2006 at 5:00pm (eastern), at the Burchfield-Penney Art Center Gallery at Buffalo State College, Rockwell Hall.

Executive director of Forever Elmwood Corporation, Justin P. Azzarella would not comment on whether or not the organization supports the development, saying, “you will just have to come to the meeting.”

Forever Elmwood Corp. is designed to preserve and protect the unique and historic nature of Elmwood Avenue and its surrounding neighborhoods and encourage neighborhood commercial revitalization. The organization was founded in 1994.

Nearly two years ago, the Forever Elmwood Corp. assisted in the blocking of the demolition of the Edward Atwater house at 1089 Elmwood next to Pano’s Restaurant which is at 1081 Elmwood. Owner Pano Georgiadis wanted to expand his restaurant onto the property where the house now stands, but the Common Council denied his permit to demolish saying the house is a historical landmark and needs to be protected. Georgiadis, who has a bleeding ulcer, said that all the court cases landed him in the hospital. “I got a bleeding ulcer, and since then, I don’t care about this house anymore, or this city. I just go to work every day. I think [preservationists] are parasites,” said Georgiadis.

Georgiadis will not be attending Tuesday’s meeting saying, “I will be out of town.”

In 1995 Hans Mobius proposed a plan to develop a Walgreens, that was to be placed in the same location, but residents and business owners shot down the proposal. Walgreens eventually withdrew its request for a variance after pressure from the community.

New Trends That Are Changing Classroom Learning

Schools are beginning to realize that the previous learning method that is successful yet slow is bottle-necking students performing abilities. There are more and more schools everyday adapting to new technological solutions to make sure there is optimal efficiency in learning and gaining knowledge. It is proven that when more than just one sensory organ is used to learn for example the eyes through reading is slower than two sensory organs being used e.g. Eyes to read and Ear to listen and other combinations of senses. British council now also provides IELTS Tests that are conducted on computer rather than paper based exam. It is essential that we provide the engaging fun ways that students expect in learning.

Students learn better when provided with individual catering instead of group learning. Many students due to better social skills end up performing better than some students who are left in the dust. More and more schools have resorted to taking suggestions and feedbacks on daily or weekly basis to try to cater individual needs and wants for optimal learning.

Blended flipped learning

This is a form of blended learning where students gain their knowledge through topics at home by watching prerecorded lectures with access to online content and then proceed on coming into class to do their homework. This helps learning process to get simpler with critical thinking skills.

Besides this in flipped learning concept classrooms are provided with fast internet access and further on various mobile based applications can be used to create an interactive learning environment. This helps the teachers assess the learning pace and effectiveness of each student with real life statistics recorded through Parent App i.e. the teachers App. This helps the teacher keep a real track of the performance of the student.

Home based online learning

Also known as remote learning, this model allows students to learn online through exclusive online content that can be accessed anywhere at any time. This is the latest way of achieving degrees from reputable universities for a fraction of the price. This is not only cheap but the documents and content is available online for you. This has been awarded as the most eco-friendly way to teaching as it produces nil carbon footprint and no paper is being wasted.

There are teacher available to reach out to if you want to bring in teachers help on a specific subject matter. This provides a higher quality of learning in a small price, with no costs of travelling or living in a different country. All you need to put yourself through online based learning is a reliable internet connection paired with fast mobile, tablet or computer.

Gaming based learning

Like the name suggests this learning model is based on gaming algorithms to try and bring critical thinking and applying it in real time. This method has proven to make students sharper and quicker to respond to changes. The idea is to use games to produce challenges for the learner with rewards and as the students progresses the challenges become harder with equally as good rewards.

Winning will help the brain release dopamine which triggers pleasure and appreciation. This makes this learning model where students aren’t forced into liking or enjoying education. This model keeps on forcing the potential within the pupil to surface.

Mind mapping

Most students complain that they aren’t really gaining any knowledge which is false to some extent as the normal learning technique at times seems passive and there isn’t any direction or at least there isn’t any direction that can be seen which is what leads to students doubting the educational system

Mind mapping is a model with the aim of making it easier for students to recall information and knowledge. Mind mapping can help students bounce ideas off each other which will train students into thinking more creatively. These ideas can be then share over social media or traditional email.

Big-data

This model is based on similar principles like online or remote learning. Today everyday life is heavily dependent on technology and if all of these tools of technology are harnessed together to provide an endless income of relevant data and knowledge. It can help create an immersive environment where learning is interaction based.

This method provides teachers with useless information like which students is lacking and where the problem is occurring and how many of total students are learning something from the curriculum. This can help the teachers to work on specifically the problems students are going through. It helps students to focus on the learning with teachers help exactly where it is needed. It is easily one of the best ways to improve student learning effectively.

These learning methods can help usher the new education systems into real life where student learning is maximized with interest. So that students don’t have to be forced to study and learn. Instead the learning will be based on self-interest which can help improve the effectiveness of this system in long term. It’s not necessary to use any of the models above in its distinct state in fact it can be changed up after mix and matching styles. Using technology will not only increase their interests but also will help them learn how to use this technology is the most efficient way possible. In short term learning is important you can still get your essay help fromwrite my essay if you don’t have time to do it yourself.

Judge delays exit exam decision until Friday

Judge delays exit exam decision until Friday

Wednesday, May 10, 2006

A California judge has delayed until Friday his decision on whether to stop the state from requiring high school students to pass the California High School Exit Examination in order to graduate.

On Monday, Alameda County Superior Court Judge Robert B. Freedman said he would issue an injunction against the high-stakes test, which was taken Tuesday by thousands of seniors in danger of not being graduated unless they pass, unless the state’s attorneys came up with an otherwise convincing argument by 2 p.m.

Instead, Freedman said he would wait until Friday to issue his decision.

The San Francisco law firm Morrison & Foerster filed the lawsuit on behalf of Richmond High School senior Liliana Valenzuela and others. It contends that the test violates the “equal protection” concept of the law in that poor students and English-language learners don’t have access to equal education.

The ruling would affect about 47,000 California high school seniors, and dozens at James Logan High School, who have yet to pass the exam and would be barred from being graduated if they don’t.

Thirty-two James Logan students were scheduled to take the second half of the two-day test Wednesday, along with thousands of others throughout the state.

Last week, state Superintendent of Schools Jack O’Connell said that about 47,000 California high school seniors still needed to pass the test or face the prospect of completing four years of schoolwork without receiving a diploma. O’Connell wrote the law requiring the test while serving in the state legislature.

The statistics O’Donnell cited also show that, while nearly 90 percent of seniors have passed the test, only 71 percent of seniors who are English learners have passed, and 83 percent of those classified as low-income have passed.

Of the 50 taking the first part of the test at Logan High on Tuesday, only 13 were native English speakers.

Cynthia O’Brien, who is coordinating the administration of the exit exam at James Logan, said she’d like some certainty about whether the test is going to be required or not.

“The politicals in STATE and our judicial system need to get together and do the right job by the students. If the Exit Exam is going to go forward, then it needs to go forward. If not, then it needs to be cancelled completely,” she said after a long day of testing Tuesday.

“It is not fair to the students to work their hearts out and agonize over something that has such a large impact on them and then find they didn’t need to work so hard. I know there are probably students who have not taken the exam seriously, but the vast majority of Logan students have. They deserve better than to not know from one day to the next what they need to do to be granted a diploma. Most of our students who are taking the exam this go around have given up electives, lunches or time after school to prepare for the test,” she said.

“I am afraid that the message we are giving our students is that you don’t need to care,” O’Brien continued, “Then, one day, the system will pull the rope tight, and students will be caught not having what they need. Yes, they should all be doing their best, but when the system cries WOLF too often, people tend to ignore the message.”

O’Donnell, in a statement released on Monday, said he would try to make sure the test counts.

“Recognizing that today’s ruling is not final, I intend to do everything in my power to ensure that at the end of the legal day we maintain the integrity of the high school exit exam, and that all graduates in the class of 2006 will enter college or the workforce with a diploma that reflects their mastery of critical academic skills,” he said.

“Independent research shows that because of the High School Exit Exam, students are working harder and learning more, and those who are struggling are getting the help they need to succeed,” he said.

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said, “Delaying the exam’s implementation does a disservice to our children by depriving us of the best tool we have to make sure schools are performing as they should be. We must increase our efforts to help all students meet the minimal bar set by the exam, not lower our standards or expectations of them.”

“I am disappointed in the Court’s tentative ruling to stop implementation of the California High School Exit Exam this year but I remain hopeful this will not be their final word,” he said.

If Freedman grants the injunction, the state’s lawyers say they’ll appeal.

Whatever happens with Valenzuela vs. California, the battle isn’t over. Next week, Freedman is scheduled to hear arguments in another suit that seeks to block the test. Lawyers for Public Advocates claim the department failed to hold until December a public hearing to consider alternatives to the test, six years after the Legislature approved it.
