Affordable Individual Health Insurance Plans: Choose The One That Suits You

In managed care plans, you have two options. Either, you can opt for HMO, that is, Health Maintenance Organisations or PPO, that is, Preferred Provider Organizations. If you choose the former, you have to take treatment only from a list of doctors provided in the affordable individual health insurance plan. In PPO, you get to take treatment from the list of doctors as well as some doctors other than the list. To take treatment from a specialist who is not mentioned in the list, you will have to take special permission from the insurance provider.

Talking about indemnity plans, here the insurance premium is higher as it allows you take treatment from any hospital or doctor that you prefer. It is best for people who have the tendency to fall ill easily and prefer being treated by doctors of their choice.

People who are healthy, less prone to falling ill and are flexible to take treatment from a selected list of doctors can choose to go for managed care plans where the insurance premium is lesser while people who wish to take treatment only from their doctors must go for indemnity plans.

Whatever plan one goes for, it is very imperative to be very clear about all the terms and conditions as well as the date from which the plan starts functioning. At times, there could be some waiting period mentioned in some line in the policy. The policy might not start offering coverage before that waiting period is over and you might not be aware of such a rule if you have not read the policy details completely. In such a case, you might come in for a shock if you fall ill during the waiting period and the company denies coverage of your expenses.

Hence, choose your affordable individual health insurance plan that suits your health conditions and read every detail of it before opting for it.

Fuel leak prompts 17,000-vehicle recall by Toyota

Sunday, June 27, 2010

Toyota announced on Friday that it will recall around 17,000 Lexus vehicles in response to risks of the fuel tank in the cars leaking after a collision.

The Lexus HS 250h model was subjected to the recall following a US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) investigation. Despite previously passing Toyota safety inspections, the conclusions of an NHTSA sub-contracted investigator were that; when the vehicles in question collided with an object at more than fifty-miles-per hour, more than 142 grams of fuel, the maximum allowed by US law, leaked from the crashed car.

According to Toyota, further tests did not show any additional failure of the fuel tank.

In response to the findings, Toyota issued a recall of all affected vehicles, since the company had no solution immediately available. The recall includes 13,000 cars already sold, as well as another 4,000 still at dealerships.

Toyota says it plans to conduct further tests to determine the cause of the leak. A Toyota spokesman, Brian Lyons, said that the company was “still working to determine what the root cause of the condition is.” It’s still unclear when exactly the recall will take place, or when dealerships will be allowed to sell this model again. Lyons said that Toyota is “working feverishly to get this resolved as soon as possible.”

Toyota isn’t aware of any accidents stemming from the leaking fuel tank in the affected vehicles, first introduced in the summer of 2009.

Mortgage Quotes Finding The Best Refinance Mortgage Lender}

Submitted by: Christina Moreno

The greatest concern when looking for refinance mortgage lender or in fact any mortgage lender is not about finding one that is the most advantageous, competent or safest, but it is all about finding the best loan provider for any mortgage loan aspirant. So, what should be the amount of stress put on the quality of the lender? That said we will discuss answer to this question later on. So, how can one find the best lender? To begin with you must have information on various mortgage lenders to select from and then prepare a list of all. Now the question is how will you get this information? As a mortgage hunter you should collect current mortgage interest rates and names of the mortgage lenders from as many sources as you can find them in.

The best means to gather this information is through the internet, by going online and getting the best mortgage rates and quotes. There are many free online mortgage quote providers at present. These service providers usually do not inquire a lot and make the entire process fast by minimizing form filling process. However, as a loan seeker you should fill the form accurately, since you are looking for a best refinance mortgage company to apply for a loan eventually and you do not want your application to be turned down by the lender you prefer. You might not require writing down the high interest rate quotes, once you have received a number of excellent quotes. Use one of the several mortgage broking sites that provide several offers by filling in just one form.

With this, you will now have a complete list of refinance mortgage offers from several lenders to begin the elimination process. Start the process by eliminating ones, that you consider is not serving your purpose and are not up to the mark, even if they offer you one of the best rates. As a mortgage seeker who wishes to set his mortgage rate for a long term you should resist any temptations to sign up for lower interest adjustable rate loan offers as these can tend to be extremely expensive in the long run.

As soon as this list is confined to a select few ones, one more question crops up, which is are you supposed to choose the lender that offers you the lowest interest rates on your mortgage or one that offers the most favorable mortgage? Well, this is reliant on how significant a particular intention is for you. For instance, if you are seeking huge amount of cash out you might prefer the lender presenting the biggest mortgage even if the interest rate might be a bit on higher side.

Finally, now let us talk about the best refinance mortgage lender. Assuming that you have confined the list to just two mortgage offers, a little known lender offers you the lowest mortgage rates and reputed bigger bank offers you a bit higher rate. Are you still thinking, which one to choose? Of course, you are right your best bet would be that bank.

Supplies And Services For Pool Cleaning In Pearland

byAlma Abell

Pool cleaning in Pearland is essential for the health of your family. Any debris in the water can react with the chemicals and cause bacteria to grow rapidly. If your pH balance is off, algae and bacteria will appear. Too much chlorine can cause eye irritations and throat irritation if you happen to swallow any water. A thin film of slime can build up on the pool lining, making it slippery and unsafe. If you plan on getting and enjoying a pool, you have to plan on keeping it cleaned, and the water chemically balanced.

It is not difficult to keep a pool clean. Modern technology has developed robotics that can do most of the work for you. You can purchase a portable vacuum that is fully automatic. You just set it in the pool and turn it on. It will propel itself along the floor and walls of your pool, vacuuming debris and filtering the water as it goes. It will even shut itself off when the task is complete. You only have to remove the filter and rinse it with a hose, so it is all set for the next cleaning. Pump flow technology allows your pool filter to use suction to skim the water and filter it. It also gently keeps the water moving, so the chemicals remained balanced. Solar pool skimmers can grab debris, filter the water, and oscillate it at the same time. This keeps your water clean and clear.

Chemicals for Pool Cleaning in Pearland can be found at department stores and pool stores. If you are not sure which chemical to use, go to a pool store and ask for help. The staff will let you know what to do. They can inform you about brands and which ones are better for your pool, and a better value. Visit Cryer Pools And Spas Inc, for example, to have your questions answered regarding pool cleaning supplies. Drain and clean services can help get your older pool looking like new. All the water gets drained out, and the pool is scrubbed from top to bottom. Clean water is then put in, along with the proper mix of chemicals.

Cleveland, Ohio clinic performs US’s first face transplant

Thursday, December 18, 2008

A team of eight transplant surgeons in Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, USA, led by reconstructive surgeon Dr. Maria Siemionow, age 58, have successfully performed the first almost total face transplant in the US, and the fourth globally, on a woman so horribly disfigured due to trauma, that cost her an eye. Two weeks ago Dr. Siemionow, in a 23-hour marathon surgery, replaced 80 percent of her face, by transplanting or grafting bone, nerve, blood vessels, muscles and skin harvested from a female donor’s cadaver.

The Clinic surgeons, in Wednesday’s news conference, described the details of the transplant but upon request, the team did not publish her name, age and cause of injury nor the donor’s identity. The patient’s family desired the reason for her transplant to remain confidential. The Los Angeles Times reported that the patient “had no upper jaw, nose, cheeks or lower eyelids and was unable to eat, talk, smile, smell or breathe on her own.” The clinic’s dermatology and plastic surgery chair, Francis Papay, described the nine hours phase of the procedure: “We transferred the skin, all the facial muscles in the upper face and mid-face, the upper lip, all of the nose, most of the sinuses around the nose, the upper jaw including the teeth, the facial nerve.” Thereafter, another team spent three hours sewing the woman’s blood vessels to that of the donor’s face to restore blood circulation, making the graft a success.

The New York Times reported that “three partial face transplants have been performed since 2005, two in France and one in China, all using facial tissue from a dead donor with permission from their families.” “Only the forehead, upper eyelids, lower lip, lower teeth and jaw are hers, the rest of her face comes from a cadaver; she could not eat on her own or breathe without a hole in her windpipe. About 77 square inches of tissue were transplanted from the donor,” it further described the details of the medical marvel. The patient, however, must take lifetime immunosuppressive drugs, also called antirejection drugs, which do not guarantee success. The transplant team said that in case of failure, it would replace the part with a skin graft taken from her own body.

Dr. Bohdan Pomahac, a Brigham and Women’s Hospital surgeon praised the recent medical development. “There are patients who can benefit tremendously from this. It’s great that it happened,” he said.

Leading bioethicist Arthur Caplan of the University of Pennsylvania withheld judgment on the Cleveland transplant amid grave concerns on the post-operation results. “The biggest ethical problem is dealing with failure — if your face rejects. It would be a living hell. If your face is falling off and you can’t eat and you can’t breathe and you’re suffering in a terrible manner that can’t be reversed, you need to put on the table assistance in dying. There are patients who can benefit tremendously from this. It’s great that it happened,” he said.

Dr Alex Clarke, of the Royal Free Hospital had praised the Clinic for its contribution to medicine. “It is a real step forward for people who have severe disfigurement and this operation has been done by a team who have really prepared and worked towards this for a number of years. These transplants have proven that the technical difficulties can be overcome and psychologically the patients are doing well. They have all have reacted positively and have begun to do things they were not able to before. All the things people thought were barriers to this kind of operations have been overcome,” she said.

The first partial face transplant surgery on a living human was performed on Isabelle Dinoire on November 27 2005, when she was 38, by Professor Bernard Devauchelle, assisted by Professor Jean-Michel Dubernard in Amiens, France. Her Labrador dog mauled her in May 2005. A triangle of face tissue including the nose and mouth was taken from a brain-dead female donor and grafted onto the patient. Scientists elsewhere have performed scalp and ear transplants. However, the claim is the first for a mouth and nose transplant. Experts say the mouth and nose are the most difficult parts of the face to transplant.

In 2004, the same Cleveland Clinic, became the first institution to approve this surgery and test it on cadavers. In October 2006, surgeon Peter Butler at London‘s Royal Free Hospital in the UK was given permission by the NHS ethics board to carry out a full face transplant. His team will select four adult patients (children cannot be selected due to concerns over consent), with operations being carried out at six month intervals. In March 2008, the treatment of 30-year-old neurofibromatosis victim Pascal Coler of France ended after having received what his doctors call the worlds first successful full face transplant.

Ethical concerns, psychological impact, problems relating to immunosuppression and consequences of technical failure have prevented teams from performing face transplant operations in the past, even though it has been technically possible to carry out such procedures for years.

Mr Iain Hutchison, of Barts and the London Hospital, warned of several problems with face transplants, such as blood vessels in the donated tissue clotting and immunosuppressants failing or increasing the patient’s risk of cancer. He also pointed out ethical issues with the fact that the procedure requires a “beating heart donor”. The transplant is carried out while the donor is brain dead, but still alive by use of a ventilator.

According to Stephen Wigmore, chair of British Transplantation Society’s ethics committee, it is unknown to what extent facial expressions will function in the long term. He said that it is not certain whether a patient could be left worse off in the case of a face transplant failing.

Mr Michael Earley, a member of the Royal College of Surgeon‘s facial transplantation working party, commented that if successful, the transplant would be “a major breakthrough in facial reconstruction” and “a major step forward for the facially disfigured.”

In Wednesday’s conference, Siemionow said “we know that there are so many patients there in their homes where they are hiding from society because they are afraid to walk to the grocery stores, they are afraid to go the the street.” “Our patient was called names and was humiliated. We very much hope that for this very special group of patients there is a hope that someday they will be able to go comfortably from their houses and enjoy the things we take for granted,” she added.

In response to the medical breakthrough, a British medical group led by Royal Free Hospital’s lead surgeon Dr Peter Butler, said they will finish the world’s first full face transplant within a year. “We hope to make an announcement about a full-face operation in the next 12 months. This latest operation shows how facial transplantation can help a particular group of the most severely facially injured people. These are people who would otherwise live a terrible twilight life, shut away from public gaze,” he said.

Kansas library discusses Wikipedia

Tuesday, February 5, 2008

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

A diverse group of approximately 25 people gathered at the Johnson County Library on Monday to participate in reference librarian Scott Vieira’s class, Wikiwhatia? Wikipedia.

Scott opened the session by sharing a disparaging quote from Robert McHenry (former editor-in-chief of Encyclopedia Britannica) comparing Wikipedia to a public restroom. He then shared a quote from Andrew Keen, author of The Cult of the Amateur, in which he stated Wikipedia is the blind leading the blind. Scott shared Wikipedia usage data from a 2007 Pew Internet study showing 36% of adults have consulted Wikipedia and that that Wikipedia receives 10,000-30,000 searches per second. Scott also pointed out that Wikipedia now has over two million articles in English alone (over nine million articles in 250 languages). So there is a discrepancy here, lots of critics and lots of use.

Scott then shared some historical information in order to provide a context for understanding Wikipedia. This included some important names and dates in the history of encyclopedias… including Pliny the Elder (23-79 C.E.) who published 37 Volumes of Natural History, and Joachim Sterck van Ringelbergh (c. 1499-1556) who first used the term encyclopedia, and then d’Alembert and Diderot who published 17 volumes of their French Encyclopedia from 1751-1765. Encyclopedia Britannica was first published in Scotland in serial format 1768-1771.

Scott also discussed more recent history, sharing a photo of Ward Cunningham –who is credited with being the inventor of wiki software. Wikipedia was founded on Jan 15, 2001 by Larry Sanger and Jimmy Wales. Sanger left Wikipedia in 2002 and founded Citizendium in 2007 a complementary project which now has 4500 articles.

After the historical perspective, the class moved into using Wikipedia. Everyone in the audience had used Wikipedia. The class explored the content of Wikipedia, realising there is a whole lot going on. Scott demonstrated that the article about “frogs” for example, is semi-protected. The “history of science” article was examined, including the history of changes. Discussion covered how people contribute, who contributes and edits. The group also talked about Wikipedia bots, which aid in routine tasks in a semi-automated or automated fashion.

A discussion about teachers, school media specialists and students regarding their use of Wikipedia ensued. Some teachers and school media specialists are negative about Wikipedia, but Scott’s hope is that they will use it to start a discussion about the need to evaluate and critically think about information (even when it’s from more traditionally reviewed and edited sources).

An unanswered question from an audience member was, “What was the first Wikipedia article?”

Discussion topics from Scott to audience were as follows:

19th century stable in Buffalo, New York officially saved from demolition

Thursday, July 3, 2008

Buffalo, New York —Developer and CEO of Savarino Companies, Sam Savarino, has confirmed to Wikinews that he has bought, and is planning to restore a severely damaged stable and livery on Buffalo’s West Side. The building partially collapsed on June 11, which originally caused 15 homes to be evacuated.

Savarino bought the building from owner Bob Freudenheim for US$1.00 and states that he hopes to save as much of the building as possible, including the facade, at least 20 feet of the side walls, all of the back walls including the elevator tower and if possible all three floors. There is one major downside to the purchase; he inherits the over $400,000 tax lien against the property.

“It was a “NYS Lotto” purchase (‘a dollar and a dream’). I do inherit the City’s lien of $400,000 though,” stated Savarino to Wikinews. The fee is what the city has been billed for the limited demolition it paid for before Savarino bought the building. Currently the city is suing Freudenheim to force him to pay for those fees.

The building is currently undergoing minor demolition in preparations to make the rest of it stable. Once complete, Savarino plans to evaluate the extent of the damage and begin his plans to make the building into residential living spaces.

“Only unstable parts are being demolished. We will see what we have to deal with as the demolition proceeds but tentative plans are for living units on two floors with parking on the ground floor,” stated Savarino. Construction is expected to begin as early as this year, but “more than likely next year,” he added.

Originally the city ordered an emergency demolition on the building after Freudenheim gave them permission to demolish it on June 12 during an emergency Preservation Board meeting. His reason was because he would not be “rehabilitating the building anytime soon.”

Freudenheim, along with his wife Nina, were part-owners of the Hotel Lenox at 140 North Street in Buffalo and were advocates to stop the Elmwood Village Hotel from being built on the Southeast corner of Forest and Elmwood Avenues. They also financially supported a lawsuit in an attempt to stop the hotel from being built. Though it is not known exactly how long Freudenheim has owned the stable, Wikinews has learned that he was the owner while fighting to stop the hotel from being built. Residents say that he has been the owner for at least 22 years. Residents successfully halted demolition after winning a restraining order in New York State Supreme Court, which will continue to monitor developments in the case. The next hearing is scheduled for September 2.

Savarino states his project could cost at least $3,500,000 and before construction can begin, all plans must be approved by the city’s planning board.
