SBC teams with Scientific-Atlanta for cable TV rollout in 13 US states

Saturday, April 2, 2005

Regional U.S. telephone giant SBC Communications is one step closer to offering cable television to the 18 million households in its 13 state coverage area. The company announced a $195 million contract with Scientific-Atlanta Thursday to provide a video operations center and regional hubs for the new service. Under the brand name, U-verse, the SBC’s television rollout is set to launch in 2006 after field trials begin later this year.

The company is seeking the so-called “triple play,” where a telecommunications company offers voice, data and video in one bundled package. Local telephone companies like SBC have been losing business to cable TV companies, which have added telephone and Internet services in recent years.

In a slew of recent deals, SBC is looking to stop that trend. Within the past six months it has signed alliances with various technology firms to build out a fiber network to the home strategy. For instance, SBC has a $1.7 billion deal with Alcatel to build out its fiber optic network and a 10-year, $400 million, pact with Microsoft to license its IPTV technology to allow multi-channel television to stream over its Internet backbone.

In most of the U.S. only cable TV companies like Comcast have been able to offer the “triple play” of voice, video and data services. But traditional phone companies like SBC and Verizon have been upgrading their copper wire telephone networks to fiber optic. SBC says it plans to spend billions of dollars to overhaul its telecommunications network, saying the aging and brittle copper wires which were originally laid in the early 1900s do not have enough bandwidth to allow television capability.

The Economic And Environmental Benefits Of Recycling Scrap Metal In Millville

byAlma Abell

Have you ever considered the environmental impact that occurs as more renewable resources accumulated in New Jersey landfills? If you have, then you understand that this growing problem has a clear solution, recycling. For example, Scrap metal in Millville is a renewable resource. By bringing your scrap metal to a recycler, you are doing your part to end this problem.

Basic Principles for a Safer Environment

The basic principles for a safer environment include reducing waste, reusing materials, and recycling at any point that an item is obsolete. The principles offer a cycle that is beneficial for everyone. It stimulates the economy through exportation of goods and reduces energy consumption across the board.

Applying the Principles to Copper

Copper recycling is advantageous and presents a wealth renewable uses. By applying these principles, you can reduce copper-related waste since products that use this resource are long-lasting and continue to work longer after newer models are released on the market. The products are reusable; they include washing machines, gas lines, air conditioners, and cellular phones. Opportunities for recycling copper include removal from plumbing pipes, non-functional appliances, and irreparable tubing.

Why You Should Recycle?

Copper that is dumped in a landfill generates a high cost not only for waste management companies, but also for the environment. As waste management providers mine for copper and other Scrap metal in Millville sulphur dioxide is produced and released into the air. These harmful gas emissions could cause devastating results on the immediate area surrounding the landfill and the environment as well.

Recycling saves energy. As compared to extracting copper from pure ore, the generation of recycled copper requires only ten percent of the necessary energy used. By using recycled copper, further resources are conserved including coal, oil, and gas. It also reduces the release of carbon dioxide into the air.

The benefit of recycling scrap metal presents growth for everyone. According to statistics, recycled products such as copper sustained only a ten percent reduction in value as compared to newly mined metals. The overall benefit is the reduction in cost for the consumer and a possibility of a safer world tomorrow.

2010 UK general election results

Thursday, May 6, 2010

This table shows the results for 649 of 650 constituencies in the 2010 general election in the United Kingdom (not including the delayed constituency of Thirsk and Malton, which will hold its election on 27 May).

The “Constituency” column shows the name of each constituency, linked to the relevant Wikipedia article. the “Result” column shows the winning party, and whether they held or gained the seat (and, if relevant, who they gained it from). The “Votes” column shows how many votes were received by the winning party, the “Share” column their share of the vote, and the “Swing” column the swing in the direction of the gaining party.

In the general election, people over the age of eighteen around the United Kingdom may choose to vote for a candidate at their local polling booth, and Members of Parliament are elected to each constituency based on the first past the post system. Whichever party has a majority of MPs after all constituencies have announced their results has the opportunity to form a government.

The incumbent party before the dissolution of parliament was Gordon Brown’s Labour Party, exit polls suggested a small Conservative Party majority, which—when this swing is projected nationally—would cause a hung parliament. The exit polls also suggested that despite reports that support for the Liberal Democrats had surged following the first national televised leaders’ debates in the United Kingdom, the Liberal Democrats would suffer from a third party squeeze.

On the morning of Friday 7, 2010 the accuracy of the exit polls was demonstrated when it was revealed that there was indeed a hung Parliament and that although the Conservative Party had the greatest number of seats and votes it would be impossible for them to achieve an outright majority. The constitution of the United Kingdom allows for the incumbent Labour Party to first attempt to form a government and incumbent Prime Minister, Gordon Brown announced that he would allow civil servants from the Cabinet Office to help facilitate negotiations. Despite the Labour Party openly courting the Liberal Party, their leader Nick Clegg has stated that as the party with the most seats and most votes the Conservatives have the right to attempt to form a government.

Some seats were also be contested by one or more of a number of smaller parties and independents, including the United Kingdom Independence Party, the British National Party, and the Green Party of England and Wales, who all already hold seats in the European Parliament and local government authorities, all hoped to gain their first seats in the House of Commons in this election. History was made when the Greens won their first Parliamentery with their leader Caroline Lucas winning Brighton Pavilion. In Northern Ireland the Alliance Party also won their first seat with Naomi Long taking Peter Robinson’s seat.

Volunteers endure bed-rest study

Tuesday, March 22, 2005Volunteers began a 60 day bed-rest marathon on March 19 to study simulated weightlessness effects on women astronauts. The study, Women International Space Simulation for Exploration(WISE), is conducted at the MEDES Space Clinic in Toulouse, France.

The 12 women, selected from 1600 applicants hailing from France,Great Britain, Germany, Finland, The Netherlands, Poland and the Czech Republic began the study after a 20 day screening for baseline comparison data as the study progressed.

The women will conduct all activities from eating, bathing, and reading while lying in hospital beds tilted headfirst at a six degree angle. This particular position, called head-down tilt bed rest was determined from previous studies to remove the vertical load of gravity on the body, inducing changes similar to what astronauts in a genuine weightless environment experience [1].

Long term exposure to weightlessness creates a number of physiological and psychological problems in astronauts such as:

A total of 24 women will participate in the study. A second group of 12 will join in September.

Three groups of eight women each will be studied over the course of the two campaigns of bed rest. One group will serve as a control, receiving no specific treatments, the second will exercise, while the third will receive nutritional supplements.

The study is designed to fill in gaps of knowledge on the differences between men and women during extended weightlessness. It also aims to develop countermeasures for reducing the debilitating effects of long spaceflights.

Participating agencies in the study include the European Space Agency, NASA, the French Space Agency and the Canadian Space Agency.

Police describe bloody evidence in NY Sen. Monserrate assault trial

Police describe bloody evidence in NY Sen. Monserrate assault trial

Thursday, October 1, 2009

A crime scene police detective and a forensic biologist testified on Tuesday about bloody evidence entered into the court record, in the ongoing criminal trial against New York State Senator Hiram Monserrate. Monserrate faces charges of felony assault in an alleged attack on his girlfriend Karla Giraldo.

The prosecution has asserted that when Monserrate discovered that his girlfriend had the business card of another man, he chose to strike out at her. Monserrate has entered a plea of not guilty to charges he sliced his girlfriend’s face with broken glass during a conflict at their apartment on December 19, 2008. The defense team denied that the injury to the woman by Monserrate was intentional, instead claiming that the incident was “an accident” and the result of Monserrate tripping while bringing Giraldo a glass of water.

An emergency physician that had treated Giraldo stated in court last Thursday that Monserrate’s girlfriend asserted to her that her injuries were not the result of an accident. Though the defense has argued that Giraldo, who is from Ecuador, may have been difficult to understand – the physician stated she conversed with Monserrate’s girlfriend in both Spanish and in English.

…it is nothing more than rank speculation.

The police detective that first inspected the crime scene testified Tuesday to the court about his recollection of discovering broken glass at the apartment, along with blood, towels covered in blood, and a ripped women’s t-shirt. Prosecutors entered into evidence a ripped sleeveless undershirt that police had found in the garbage outside Monserrate’s apartment on the night of the alleged attack. Bloody towels were was also found at the crime scene in the bathroom, and bloody smudges were discovered on a light switch in the bedroom.

According to forensic biologist Ewilina Badja, the majority of the blood found at the scene originated from one woman. Prosecutors assert that this woman is Giraldo, who was treated for injuries surrounding her left eye that took approximately 40 stitches to remedy. Badja identified blood on a male green shirt found in the bathroom sink as that of Monserrate.

Joseph Tacopina, defense counsel for Monserrate, argued that the police detective’s testimony does not prove his client attacked Giraldo. NY1 reported that Tacopina stated: “There’s not a piece of evidence that supports there was a scuffle where someone tore someone’s clothing, so it is nothing more than rank speculation. It was not a blood drenched t-shirt. When it was torn who knows? I have in my closet right now torn T-shirts that I wear to bed every night.”

On cross-examination, Tacopina queried New York City Police Department crime scene analyst Detective David Hernandez regarding the blood discovered on the bedroom light switch. According to Hernandez, police did not evaluate the blood on the light switch; Hernandez also stated that the lights in the apartment were found turned on. Tacopina argued that this bolsters the story provided by defense – that his client stumbled in a dark room while attempted to bring water to his girlfriend, and placed his bloody hand on the light switch after accidentally breaking the drinking glass on Giraldo’s face.

Queens Supreme Court Justice William Erlbaum will judge the case without a jury, as Monserrate waived his right for a trial before his peers. The group National Organization for Women has requested that the judge rule Monserrate should be given “the maximum sentence allowable by law”. If convicted, Democrat Sen. Monserrate could serve seven years in prison and lose his New York State Senate seat.

Monserrate is a former city councilman. He became a member of the New York State Senate weeks after the alleged conflict with Giraldo, and was made chair of the committee overseeing consumer affairs. Along with Democrat Pedro Espada Jr., Monserrate started a shift in control of the Senate by aligning with the Republican Party.

Iran demands that IAEA end surveillance of its nuclear program

Tuesday, February 7, 2006

Shortly after ending its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the government of Iran has now ordered the IAEA to discontinue some of its surveillance of Iran’s nuclear facilities. Tehran has also asked the agency to remove any and all signage from their nuclear sites by the end of next week.

This is in response to the Saturday resolution by the IAEA to report Iran to the United Nations Security Council, which was made without waiting for the director of the IAEA, Mohamed ElBaradei, chairman of the IAEA, to finish preparing a report on Iran’s civilian (and allegedly military) nuclear programs for the regular IAEA meeting scheduled for March 6. ElBaradei had given Iran until March to answer IAEA questions. By a vote of 27 to three (with five abstentions), and without the information in ElBaradei’s report planned for March 2006, the IAEA recommended that the matter of the Iranian nuclear program be brought before the Security Council.

The recommendation claims that there are serious concerns about Iranian nuclear aims, and the agency does not have confidence that the program is intended solely for civilian or other non-military use. Although the meeting was taken without waiting for ElBaradei’s March report, the recommendation requests ElBaradei to make his report anyway, including a list of “steps Iran needs to take to dispel suspicions about its nuclear ambitions” by March 6.

The IAEA’s resolution calls for Iran to reinstate a freeze on its nuclear programs, consider ending construction of a plutonium-producing heavy water reactor, and to continue allowing the IAEA’s purposes and actions in Iran. However, the council will not implement any further action until ElBaradei makes his full report on March 6.

ElBaradei also reported to the IAEA Monday that Iran would also demand a reduction in the amount of facilities inspections from the agency, and that they would discontinue their agreement to the Additional Protocol of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) if the agency reported Iran to the Security Council. This protocol entitles the IAEA to hold unannounced inspections of facilities, increased surveillance capability, and placing IAEA seals on nuclear equipment.

Other diplomatic ventures are being planned. On February 16, Iranian officials will meet with the Russian government in Moscow to discuss the possibility of Russia enriching uranium for export to Iran in exchange for a halting of its nuclear enrichment program. And Wang Guangya, China’s ambassador to the UN, said Monday that “Even with the adoption of this IAEA resolution, it is the belief of most of the members there that a diplomatic solution is the way out within the framework of the IAEA.”

Is Coconut Oil Better Than Olive Oil?

By Jeff Keto

I had a stroke 13 months ago. At 36 years of age, that was a wake up call to really start eating right. I had dropped 68 lbs over an 18 month period prior to the stroke by eliminating fast foods and soda and exercising more. At 50% of my goal I thought I was doing well. But now I had to get serious about what I ate, especially since I had lost use of my right side making exercise out of the question for many months.

I have had to totally revamp what and how I ate. No more fried or fatty foods, no cakes, pastries or candies, a lot smaller portions, less carbs, less fats and more good foods were required. In fact, my stomach seemed so full with so much less that I had to make everything I ate count.

I had made it past being a statistic (stroke is the #3 killer in the USA and Europe) and I wanted to keep from being a future statistic (70% of stroke victims die in the first year). Fruits and vegetables became the norm, with grilled fish, especially salmon, and lean meats, such as chicken breast, rounding out my meals. Oatmeal and whole grain cereals became my regular breakfast foods. A few heart-healthy nuts like almonds, cashews, and sunflower seeds became my snacks. It is a lot different having to change your lifestyle than thinking about what you can change.

Of course I had to change what I put on a salad. The standard dressings are just too high in salt, sugar and fat. Olive oil with non-salt seasonings became the dressing of choice, in moderation. In fact, anything requiring oil was replaced with virgin olive oil.

During the past year I have gained back some use of my limbs and can actually go for walks unassisted. I can eat a little more and have been able to add some other foods in my diet in moderation, being very careful what I eat. My weight loss during this period was 13 lbs.

My blood tests showed my beginning bad cholesterol, LDL, were 166 mg/dL and my triglycerides were over 200 mg/dL. Normal levels of LDL should be 70-130 and triglycerides 0-150. Both bad cholesterol and triglycerides dropped significantly by my diet changes to the point where my doctor was no longer concerned about my new levels of bad cholesterol 110 mg/dL.

Apparently my changes in diet had helped drop the LDL levels, but my lack of ability to really exercise had caused my good cholesterol, HDL, to drop to 32, putting me at a greater risk of heart disease. Desirable levels of HDL are 40-70. The recommendation was to try and add more exercise. But, I was already doing as much as I could. I needed to find other ways to help raise my good cholesterol.

I had heard about the health benefits of coconut oil, so I got on the computer and started researching the facts. Convinced this may help me I approached the doctor with what I had learned. At first she was against the idea of my using coconut oil because of the saturated fats associated with this oil. I agreed. Thats what loads chocolate with so much saturated fats. The oil is processed and chemically treated. Ugh!

But, I showed her that virgin coconut oil is processed differently. It is pure and contains lauric acid. Its fats are healthier medium chain fats beneficial to the body. I showed her the studies and results of people using virgin coconut oil. In the end she agreed to let me give it a try for one month.

Here are the results of adding two teaspoons of virgin coconut oil each morning to my banana/milk/protein shake and replacing virgin olive oil with virgin coconut oil in my salad dressings. Note that my exercise remained the same as before. My good cholesterol rose to 40 mg/dL, my bad cholesterol dropped to 100 mg/dL, my Triglycerides dropped to 140 mg/dL and I dropped 10 lbs. I cant wait to see the results in 6 weeks when I get tested again.

Virgin coconut oil definitely has very good benefits. It is too bad the commercial coconut oil manufacturers use in foods, especially chocolates, are so highly processed and chemically altered that they are so loaded with saturated fats. I hear you can even safely use virgin coconut oil to replace cooking oils used in sauting and frying. I dont know if I will try frying foods again. But, maybe it would be a healthy choice for you. In any case, virgin coconut oil is the new oil of choice in my household.

You can get virgin coconut oil at most health food stores. Or check out my website for a link to where I buy my virgin coconut oil and other vitamins and supplements, often at a discount.

Five police officers killed in Dallas, Texas during sniper attack

Sunday, July 10, 2016

On Thursday, five police officers were killed and seven were injured after a sniper attacked a public protest march in downtown Dallas, Texas. Sources indicate at least three other people were taken into custody for questioning relating to the attack. The march was held to protest the shooting deaths of Alton Sterling in Louisiana and Philando Castile in Minnesota during engagements with police officers.

Police identified 25-year-old Micah Johnson as the suspect. Johnson had previously served in the US army, and police reported he said he wanted to exact revenge upon police officers after news of Sterling and Castile’s deaths. Ammunition and weapons were found inside Johnson’s home. Dallas Police reported the policemen were shot at from a height. Officials said two civilians were also injured in the attack.

Micah Johnson served for the United States Army Reserve from 2009 until early 2015, including a tour of Afghanistan. Johnson had no criminal record. His attack was reported to be a lone mission.

After the attack earlier on Thursday, police killed Micah Johnson in El Centro College’s parking lot by a bomb explosion.

Hillary Clinton, 2016 United States presidential election candidate and favorite for the Democratic nomination this July, said, “There is too much violence, too much hate, too much senseless killing, too many people dead who shouldn’t be. No-one has all the answers. We have to find them together.”

After Johnson was killed, Mike Rawlings, Dallas’ mayor, said “We believe now the city is safe”.
