“No H5N1 virus” found in blood tests of suspected human Bird Flu cluster

Thursday, August 3, 2006

Preliminary tests performed on samples taken from six villagers in the Kabanjahe District of Sumatra in Indonesia have tested negative for the deadly H5N1 Avian Flu virus.

“Investigations by the ministry of health lab and Namru, too, on August 2 and 3 on all specimens collected from the suspected cases in Kabanjahe district came up negative,” said Indonesia’s health minister, Siti Fadilah Supari.

Final test results are expected in at least seven days from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. “The World Health Organization (WHO) requires human samples to be sent to one of WHO’s six collaborative centres. So, we only need to send them to CDC Atlanta as it has worked with the U.S. NAMRU-2 lab here,” added Supari.

Supari also stated that all individuals are suffering from the “common flu.”

One “Big” Interview Question For A Restaurant Manager Position And How To Answer It}

Submitted by: Gail Wise

Great, your resume has got you the interview for the restaurant manager position you want so NOW its time to prepare your responses to at least one of tougher questions you might be asked in your hospitality job interview.

Hospitality job interviewers often ask you a lot of different questions during the interview process in order to ascertain whether youre qualified for the position youre interviewing for.

One of the biggies that interviewers often ask a hospitality job candidate

is: What do you feel are your strengths and weaknesses.

Or what they are really asking you is what skills or attributes makes you a good fit for the job of restaurant manager and what about you may hinder you from giving them your best job performance

Were going to give you some possible responses to that question but be aware that these answers are only guidelines for possible responses.

You should take the time to evaluate what answers honestly work for you and adapt your responses appropriately.

Lets imagine that youre at the interview and youre asked the question What are your strengths and weaknesses as a restaurant manager.

And your possible responses could be:

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htnKWPs9LuU[/youtube]

My strengths:

Guest Service: I thoroughly enjoy talking with the guests at my present position at XYZ Restaurant and take pride in my ability to make them feel relaxed and comfortable when they visit. Guests appreciate a manager taking the time to stop and ask them about their visit or how they enjoyed the food or inquiring about their family.

Multi-tasker: A good supervisor or manager has to be able to multi-task.

What I mean by this is you have to have the ability to see the whole restaurant at once and then be able to prioritize on the fly what you should focus on at that particular moment to make the restaurant run as efficiently as possible. This I feel I do very well.

Anticipate Problems: Rather than waiting for a fire to develop and then try put it out I try to anticipate any potential problems. For example if it the restaurant has an influx of guests I go to the kitchen and immediately alert the kitchen staff to prepare for a rush.

Or in walking through the dining room and speaking with guests I can see if a guest needs something or seems upset for some reason.

Calm amid Chaos: In any restaurant problems arise, guests might be unhappy because they feel the food is taking too long to come out of the kitchen etc. It is important for a supervisor or manager to remain calm no matter what is going on around them. If the supervisor or managers remain calm it can steady the employees so they handle the situation better. This I also think I do well.

Experience: I have worked in the restaurant industry for some time have had held various positions such as bartender, catering manager, server, and restaurant manager and therefore have a good working knowledge of many different aspects of the restaurant business.

I have also worked with many restaurant managers some really great at their jobs and some not so good. This has given me a better idea of what makes a great restaurant manager.

Employee Relationships: I try to create an environment for employees where they feel they can talk to me and I will listen.

I treat all the employees with respect and I feel I am respected in return. I dont put myself on a pedestal and I am not adverse to cleaning a table if a guest needs the table, or helping a server set up the restaurant if they are a little behind. I believe the employees appreciate that and work perhaps a little harder than they might normally.

My Weaknesses:

Perfectionism: No matter what job I do I always work hard to do the very best job I can. Unfortunately this causes me to sometimes take criticism too personally; rather than to see criticism as constructive and only as advice on how to do my job a little better.

Taking Work Seriously: Although I do take my work very seriously I think it may appear to others as though I dont because I like to enjoy my work and am a gregarious person. I think I may be perceived by some as not being serious enough and therefore not capable of a high level of responsibility.

Conflict: I do not like personal confrontation when it is aggressive and will sometimes avoid this kind of situation when it should be dealt with. I sometimes have a difficult time saying what needs to be said in a way positive and constructive way.

Relationships at Work: I have worked at my present position for four years and have become work friends with some of the employees. Although I do attempt in my job as manager to make sure everyone follows the rules and regulations; my “work” friendships could be perceived by some as a hindrance to me being a fair and effective manager.

*As a side note another question you might be asked at your interview is what you would like to or need to learn more about to become an even more effective restaurant manager. Some possible responses could be

1. Better working knowledge of (BOH) back of the house operations

2. Better working knowledge of food and labor costs and how to analyze this knowledge to make the restaurant more profitable.

Remember preparation is the key to a successful hospitality job interview.

The responses we provided to this one big interview question is just a guide from which to create your own responses.

Interviewers expect honesty so take time to think about what makes YOU a good manager and what qualities and skills you have that will make you an asset for the company.

Ted Haggard reaches financial settlement with New Life Church

Sunday, February 11, 2007

The New Life Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado has reached a financial settlement with its founder (and former head of National Association of Evangelicals) pastor Ted Haggard. Haggard stepped aside as senior pastor in the Church in November 2006, when a male prostitute claimed that he had engaged in a three year relationship with Haggard and that the two used methamphetamine.

Haggard, who was publicly critical of homosexuality, has agreed to leave the church he founded and led for two decades with a promise that he will not discuss the scandal, will move out of Colorado Springs, and will not reveal how much his financial settlement is.

On February 4th, Haggard sent an e-mail to New Life members stating, “We all wanted to know why I developed such incongruity in my life. Thankfully, with the tools we gained there, along with the powerful way God has been illuminating his Word and the Holy Spirit has been convicting me and healing me, we now have growing understanding which is giving me some hope for the future.”

Rev. Tim Ralph said, after Haggard completed a three-week counseling program, “He [Haggard] is completely heterosexual.”

However, Mike Jones, the man who had allegedly had a 3 year relationship with Haggard publicly replied, “Give me a break.” Adding, “He’s been performing oral sex on me for three years. You don’t change that in three weeks.” And “Until he’s honest with himself, he’ll never be happy.” Jones is currently writing a book detailing his relationship with Haggard due out in summer 2007.

According to interim senior pastor Ross Parsley, at services on Sunday February 18 the panel will “provide any necessary clarification of (Haggard’s) restoration process and give us a report on the New Life staff.”

Auckland City Council acts to remove suspect chemicals in pre-school’s soil

Saturday, April 1, 2006

Chemicals, which the Auckland City Council said are a suspected cause of cancer and are considered toxic, have been found in soil at a children’s playcentre in Auckland. The contamination was found at the Auckland Central Playcentre in Freemans Bay, and the Council will now spend $100,000 removing the top 50 cm (about 20 in) of soil at the playcentre, doing landscaping and replacing playground equipment.

The presence of “polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, including benzo-a-pyrene,” was suspected at the school playground and was confirmed by a chemical analysis on Tuesday. The chemicals may cause temporary digestive and respiratory distress, as well as irritation of the eyes and skin. The levels of benzo-a-pyrene found were between 0.06 and 4.82 milligrams per kilogram of soil at surface level, according to the Ministry of Education. A potential risk is present at levels above 3.5 mg.

Tim Curry, TV premiere screenings, cosplay feature at Fan Expo Canada

Wednesday, September 6, 2017

Toronto pop culture convention Fan Expo Canada has wrapped for another year. It ran from Thursday to Sunday. Major panels included Tim Curry and the cast of Rocky Horror Picture Show, Beauty and the Beast voices Robby Benson and Paige O’Hara, actors Kathleen Turner, Richard Dreyfuss, Anthony Daniels, Felicia Day, and child leads from Stranger Things. Canadian television channel Space hosted a Star Trek: Discovery panel with seven lead cast members. On the heels of sister event Toronto Comic Con’s Degrassi reunion event, the lineup included a twentieth anniversary panel with the stars of another Canadian high school television series, Student Bodies.

Heading into its fourth and final season, attendees got a chance to see the season opener of Star Wars: Rebels on Saturday, followed by a panel. The event has had a continuing relationship with the series, screening other episodes previously. The second season premiere of the sci-fi series Travelers was accompanied by a panel including Eric McCormack. Canadian true-crime drama Bad Blood had its world premiere. Other debuts included broadcaster City with the Canadian premiere of Ghosted, with Craig Robinson in attendance, Teletoon with the Canadian premiere of Hotel Transylvania: The Series, and YTV with the new animated series Mysticons.

Anime fans could watch episodes of their favourite shows, including AKB0048, Otaku No Video, Hana Yamata, My Hero Academia, Fairy Tail, and Penguindrum.

The book Star Wars Made Easy, targeted to non-fans to get up to speed on the fictional universe’s various facts and figures, was ironically launched by DK Canada for a room of fans of the franchise. Author Christian Blauvelt answered questions from the audience on topics like his opinion on Midiclorians — he understands fan contention, but suggested that science and religion can co-exist, like in the real world — quizzed the audience on trivia, and signed copies of his book.

Some panels were quite ahead of the curve: one on Star Wars costume and prop building discussed building Porgs figures, despite the film The Last Jedi not being released to theatres yet.

York Regional Police were at the event with United and Unity, two brightly lit characters of their own creation. The force received funding in 2014 from the Provincial Anti-Violence Intervention Strategy to create a short film featuring the character United, receiving positive recognition locally. “Our United superhero program is part of our on-going efforts to connect with our community and show police in a different light,” YRP Constable Andy Pattenden told Wikinews. He explains that the officers who developed the project have a background in film-making, and “serve as an opportunity for us to start a conversation with youth and connect with them at a non-traditional level.”

Star Wars character Jabba the Hutt, a puppet in the 1983 film Return of the Jedi, was re-created by the 501st Legion as an animatronic. The 501st is a fan group that dresses like the series villains for charitable events, particularly those raising funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The new addition to their annual display commanded long lineups throughout the day, from con-goers looking to donate in exchange for a photo-op with the massive, slug-like alien.

As with most major conventions, cosplayers were numerous, ranging from simple outfits that wouldn’t raise an eyebrow if worn from day-to-day, to elaborately-created costumes and giant props. Outfits recognized by Wikinews’ reporter ranged from classic characters like the 1960s version of Batgirl and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, a character created by Walt Disney in 1927, before Mickey, to 2010s characters from creative works like Undertale, Disney Descendants, League of Legends, and Adventure Time. Few characters are too obscure, if they appeal to a fan: the female avatar of “hivemind” character Unity, from a single episode of Rick and Morty, was spotted. One woman “biting” another woman’s arm would be cause for concern most places, but at a pop culture convention, it simply means that “Lilo” is re-enacting a scene with “Mertle”, as seen in the film Lilo and Stitch.

Wikinews talked with Cheryl, the co-host of the weekly video series “Our Didnee Side”, who was dressed as Gadget Hackwrench, a mouse from the 1990s television series Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers. Speaking for both of the hosts, she said their passion for Disney has “exploded” since starting the YouTube channel, and that they are both “creators. We can’t seem to go a day without making something. We love doing Disney cosplay because it is like a beacon for other people in the fandom to come find us in a sea of other characters.” Conventions like Fan Expo Canada become “a great opportunity to meet like-minded Disney fans, and to possibly escape for the weekend from our ‘boring human’ lives.”

Adrianna Prosser, host of Toronto geek culture community website Geektropolis, spent part of the convention Fan Expo Canada 2017 as the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. She told Wikinews that “geeking in Toronto is always such a joy, what with amazing cosplay and passionate fandoms coming together at Fan Expo!” She explained that the site tries to keep the feeling of the event going all year, featuring local creators and “geeky” fans, in an effort to bring the community closer together.

Party game Cards Against Humanity — intriguingly available under a non-commercial Creative Commons license — offered a “Free Apologies from An American” booth, where a representative offered regrets to the largely Canadian visitors. The booth’s curtains came into use at least once on Friday, closing when a Trump cosplayer reached the front of the line.

Pfizer to cut jobs in Michigan

Monday, January 22, 2007

Pfizer CEO Jeffery Kindler has announced that 2,410 jobs will be cut in Michigan, taking out three plants in the state. Pfizer has also announced that they will cut a total of 10 000 jobs by next year. The Ann Arbor, Kalamazoo, and Plymouth sites are representatives of the world’s largest drug manufacturing company.

A portion of these jobs will be reassigned in Pfizer plants in cities such as La Jolla, CA, Groton, CT, and Sandwich in the United Kingdom. These cuts come after Pfizer’s newest drug in development, torcetrapib, was scrapped late last year due to unexpected side effects.

The money spent researching the drug Torcetrapib ended with the loss of millions of dollars. This comes as a bigger blow to the region when coupled with ongoing losses to major car manufacturers in the Detroit area, and Gov. Jennifer Granholm said today, “We’re going to have a whole ‘Stick Around Ann Arbor’ campaign for these employees, because we want them to stay here.”

Among the other groups affected are Ann Arbor schools, to whom Pfizer pays millions of dollars, and local businesses. Most employees declined comment, as they are being asked by Pfizer not to talk with the media.

Pirates seize tourist yacht near Seychelles, troops deployed

Thursday, April 2, 2009

According to officials, Somali pirates have seized a luxury boat named the Ocean Explorer off the coast of the Seychelles archipelago in the Indian Ocean. Seven Seychellois crew members are believed to be on board. The boat is thought to be headed for Somalia.

Patrick Pillay, the Foreign Affairs Minister, said that the Seychelles government had contacted local naval forces who had pledged to “track down the boat.”

“The Indian Ocean Explorer has been seized by pirates about 600 miles west of the capital. What I’ve been told is they believe this has been taken to the Somali coast,” said Fergus Cochrane-Dyet, the British High Commissioner the Seychelles.

“As far as we know there were no foreign nationals on board. The vast majority of tourists come to the inner island resorts but a small number are more intrepid and visit the outer islands. I believe this yacht was used for visiting Aldabra,” she said.

This is not the first time Somali pirates have frequented the area: the Seychelles police chief stated that pirates held hostage three Seychellois sailors after their catamaran was hijacked in February.

Somali pirates, usually looking for a ransom, attacked over 130 merchant ships in the area in 2008. The International Maritime Bureau reports that number of attacks has increased by over 200% since 2007.

Platelet Rich Plasma Offering Alternative Orthopedic Process

Platelet Rich Plasma Offering Alternative Orthopedic Process by jonny waghDiseases have no age or gender bias in general. They can happen to anybody at ant point of time. Usually during the peak of youth one is busy in indulging in all sorts of busy work schedules, trying to amass as much wealth as one can in order to fulfill the dreams. However in the process the continuous wear and tear of the various joints and parts of one’s body is something that one must have paid the most attention is left all unattended and taken for granted. It is this repeated and deliberate neglect that leads on to the doorsteps of the disease pertaining to the joints and the veins. Though the platelet rich plasma has come up as a minimally invasive surgery process as remedy to the same, yet the best way out is still the prevention method. The minimally invasive surgery refers to the situation in which the conducted surgery involves the bare minimum exposure. The platelet rich plasma in fact is a kind of the same that aids to recover from various sports related injuries like the following:

  • Tennis Elbow
  • Patellar Tendonitis
  • Achilles Tendonitis
  • Early Stage of Osteoarthritis
  • The list continues with varying degrees of magnitude as far as the affected area is concerned. In case the affected area evinces signs of an early stage it is advisable to tend to it in ways other than that of the surgery. Though the ibid mentioned process is not that hassle oriented, however the lesser the body is exposed to them the better. The most obvious questions that will plague the mind of the individual in the preliminary level of contemplation are as below: What is the platelet rich plasma?Making use of the platelet rich plasma or commonly known as the PRP, involves a sequential process. The initiation of the same occurs with the collection of the individual’s blood sample. Post collection the next step involves the concentration of the platelets found in the blood sample of the respective individual. This concentration is done via the usage of the centrifuge. The platelets act like the guardians who fight with disease germs by default as a mechanism of the human body, hence contributing to the process of healing. This concentration is directly injected into the affected area. This way the platelet rich plasma speedens up the process of recovery. What does the minimally invasive surgery refer to?The minimally invasive surgery refers to the quick technique that leaves behind no scar pertaining to the surgery. The process involves a comparatively short and painless post operative phase of recovery. It involves the usage of local anesthesia. This treatment involves not only an ultrasound examination but also a physical examination to map the affected area. The time required is more or less an hour or so. Thus with the basic information on the minimally invasive surgery and the platelet rich plasma one must be amply clear of the undeniable contribution that they have made in order to enhance the medical arena and reduce the burden of pain suffered by the respective individualJonny Wagh is a surgeon on Knee replacement . • “Hotel development proposal could displace Buffalo, NY business owners” — Wikinews, February 17, 2006

    Friday, March 10, 2006

Buffalo, New York —The Common Council of Buffalo voted on Tuesday to send the Elmwood Village Hotel proposal “to committee for further discussion”, after citing the need for more public involvement.

The Elmwood Village Hotel is a development proposal by the Savarino Construction Services Corporation, a project designed by the architect Karl Frizlen of The Frizlen Group. The hotel would be placed on the southeast corner of Elmwood and Forest Avenues in Buffalo.

To make way for the project, at least five buildings located at 1109 to 1121 Elmwood Ave would be demolished. At least two properties on Forest Avenue could also be demolished. The Elmwood properties, according to Eva Hassett, Vice President of Savarion Construction, are “under contract”, but it is unclear if Savarino Construction actually owns the Elmwood properties. Hans Mobius, a former mayorial candidate, is still believed to be the current owner the properties. Mobius also owns 607 Forest Avenue.

The properties 605 and 607 Forest Avenue could also be included in the proposal according to Hassett.

“We would use a Special Development Plan to rezone 1119-1121 Elmwood and 605 Forest to a C-2 zoning category,” stated Hassett. It is possible that Savarino Construction may try to obtain a variance for 605 Forest, which would allow them to enforce eminent domain, should the hotel be allowed to go forward.

The building at 607 Forest was also discussed to be rezoned, but it is unclear what the plans would be for that property. During the February 28 Common Council meeting, Hassett stated that the properties 605 and 607 were “now off the agenda”.

Pano Georgiadis, owner of Pano’s Restaurant at 1081 Elmwood, owns the property at 605 Forest and attended Tuesday’s Common Council meeting.

“Having a hotel is a bright idea. We all love the idea of a hotel, but the way that it is presented, is wishful thinking. This hotel does not fit. It’s like putting two gallons of water in a gallon jug, it does not fit. At the last meeting, the architect admitted that they are planning to put the undergound parking lot and the hotel, right at the property line. If I open my window, I will be able to touch the wall, that goes fifty feet high”, said Georgiadis.

“There is a problem having a seventy-two room hotel and fifty-five parking spaces. That means that all the other cars will spill all over the neighborhood. The footprint is simply too small. If you have a bigger [parking] lot, and a smaller hotel, I will welcome a hotel. I have a parking lot at my own business, and I am chasing people all day long. Remember, the city says it has ‘zero tolerance [for illegal parking]’. Try telling that to the guy from Albany who came to see his kids, that are going to Buffalo State, who would get tickets totaling over a hundred dollars”, added Georgiadis.

The city’s Planning Board is scheduled to meet on March 14, 2006 at 9:00 a.m. about the proposal. Although a discussion will take place, no vote is expected to be taken.

At the moment, none of the properties are zoned for a hotel. Savarino Construction plans on asking for a C2 zoning permit. If that does not work, they plan to implement a new zoning plan called a “special development plan” which would allow for only a hotel on the site. That zone would not be able to be changed.

“This [project] justifies Mobius’s refusal to invest in any maitenance[sic] or improvements”, on the properties said Clarence Carnahan, a local resident. “Where were the Council persons over the years? Where were the city inspectors over the years, to make sure that he maintained and improved his properties? The government was supposed to be protecting, not being preditorial. I see a predatorial issue here when it comes to this hotel. Over the years: Why has the local government been disfunctional when it came to Mobius’s properties? Refusal to invest in improvements, doesn’t that sound like a slumlord? Maybe I am missing a point here, but what kind of messages does this send to other slumlords that havn’t[sic] been jailed or fined? It’s [the hotel] trying to be pushed through.”

Carnahan also presented signs for residents and or business owners who are opposed to the hotel, that could be placed in windows or on stakes in the yard. Some of the signs said, ‘No tell hotel’, ‘Hans off, no hotel’, ‘It takes more than a hotel to make a village’. and ‘Keep Elmwood free, no hotel’. Carnahan plans on making more signs for a protest to be held on Saturday March 18, at 2:00 p.m. (EST) on Elmwood and Forest. Some signs were given to individuals after the meeting.

“First things first, Hans is the problem, and I don’t think it has been addressed. Let’s roll back the clock on this project. What can we do with Hans? There is such thing as eminent domain, which could be of greater interest to the community, to seize the property at its lowest assessed value”, said Nancy Pollina, co-owner of Don Apparel with Patty Morris at 1119 Elmwood. “There are so many ideas that have not been explored and we are about to give this parcel away, to a big developer.”

Mobius has not returned any calls by Wikinews regarding the situation.

A freelance journalist writing for Wikinews has obtained a letter, exclusively, addressed to one of the five business owners from Hans Mobius stating:

There is a proposal to develop my property which you are currently renting. Because of opposition to this development, it does not look like it will happen. I will let you know if there any changes.

Despite the letter, there have been no plans or decisions made to end the proposal.

To date, none of the business owners or residents of 1119-1121 Elmwood have received an eviction notice.

Business owners and residents gave an indication of what they would like to see happen at the corner; a project similar to one done locally last year. There, developers renovated two buildings on Auburn and Elmwood Avenues, merging the buildings into one thus allowing for more shop space. Among some of the shops to move in after the development were Cone Five Pottery, The Ruby Slipper, and Abraham’s Jewelers. Prior to the renovation work, the left building in the picture was boarded up for several years. Many of the concerned locals would like to see a similar development on Forest and Elmwood.

Rocco Termini, a developer in Buffalo, proposed a similar design at the February 28 community meeting

In an interview after the February 28 meeting, Termini stated, “I will be willing to take a look at this myself, or I would be more than happy to be partners with Sam, Sam Savarino”, who is President and Chief Executive Officer of Savarino Construction Services Corp.

So far Savarino Construction has no plans to team up with Termini.

New Internet addresses tested on World IPv6 Day

    Wednesday, June 8, 2011

Online organisations around the world are today testing Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) — a new system of Internet addresses hoped to resolve the issue of the present system being at capacity. World IPv6 Day is checking everything works as planned.

The current IPv4 standard was set up in the 1980s; it gives everything on the Internet a twelve-digit address and allows for 4.3 billion combinations. With these exhausted, IPv6 is designed to increase the limit 340 undecillion — that’s 340 trillion trillion trillion.

Major websites including services run by Google, Facebook, and Yahoo! are taking part in the test, switching their content to use the new system. Facebook predicts 99.97% of users to be unaffected and Google anticipates 99.5% will not encounter problems. The remainder may encounter slow page loading.

Fiji and Australia are among the first countries to have business-hours web traffic during the test. Internet Society of Australia President Tony Hill claims more than 100 global companies are involved.
