A Progressive Era Of The Short Lived Revival

By Paul Hu

In 2008, the Democratic Party has captured the White House and Congress, to achieve unified government hospital. At that time, the U.S. liberals, particularly liberal group of intellectuals tend to cry, this is the funeral of neo-conservatism, a new “Progressive Era” campaign officially kicked off. But two years, Democrats control the House of Representatives put the return of the Republican Party. Although the Democratic Party barely hold the Senate, but the hospital has formed a pattern of confrontation between the government, Obama could become a lame duck president.

“Progressive Era” refers to the 1890s to the 1920s in the USA to set off a “clean government” as the main objective of the reform wave of social activities. “Progressive era” is to cut collusion respected, the Government passed to take on more public responsibilities, the plundering of the consortia to compete to protect the public interest. If Obama took office two years ago, ready to promote liberal reforms, can be called “Progressive Era” revival, then the last three decades than the last time that field, but this round of two-year recovery period is also short-lived pitiful.

The Democratic Party lost a lot of people will blame the economy. Clinton-era phrase “stupid, this is the economy,” as many Democrats seem to be reluctantly like the shoulders shrugged provides an excellent reason. Indeed, in January 2009, Obama came to power, took over from Bush hands a mess. Two years later, the real estate market is still overflowing bubble, investors and consumers are still scared, still double-digit unemployment rate is even, and the most fatal is the fiscal deficit is huge attention startling.

However, when the Republicans call him too left, the traditional left-wing and his lack of courage to go further, indicating most of the past two years is a compromise of various legislation, this middle line deserves the support of centrist.

The paradox is that this election reflects the dissatisfaction is centrist. Obama’s personal popularity, two years ago, Liu Cheng fell from less than four as now, “tea party” of the rise, but also to join the centrist. Many people understand, why did Barack Obama meet the interests of the middle, but still so centrist that he did not listen to their demands? The real reason is that two years ago that that election is not truly representative of “progressive era” of the Renaissance, the Americans have not completely from the “big market, small government,” the myth of self-examination over.

Cornell University scholar Elizabeth Sanders in the latest issue of “Public Administration Review” published “American Progressive Era Implications for China” article. According to her view, the United States into the Progressive Era a century ago, the community has a range of social issues and the response has been a broad consensus, when the spirit of the times, is “inclined to collectivism and expansive model of governance” . Look back to the United States today. Like autumn leaves Democratic sweep two years ago, sweeping the White House and Congress, of course, reflect the psychological change American voters, but this change was the main cornerstone of Bush do not like the war in Iraq into a quagmire. The flag by the anti-war, the first setback for McCain after Hillary Clinton defeated Barack Obama, the White House thrust health care reform, but often neglected phenomena, and finally won a castrated health care bill. This explains, in the “big government” issue to centrist not Zhuanguo Wan. Without their support, social consensus out of the question, saying revival of the Progressive Era, I am afraid more of the academic human wishful thinking.

Sanders applied point of view, the United States to have “progressive era” is a bottom-up by means of social drive. So, that the United States in 2008 into the “revival of the Progressive Era,” is just an illusion. In a democracy, left-wing liberals in the most practical approach is to compromise the progress of social consensus to consolidate the results. Unfortunately, the past two years the biggest, the House Democrats, preferring to have been a buffer in the left-right conflict in the role of the President as their puppet, so centrist initiation huge dissatisfaction. Indeed, although this phantom-like “the revival of the Progressive Era,” only for a short-lived two years, but the spirit of democracy, perhaps the most valuable is this, the decision is always in the voters hands.

Earthquake-damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant triggers evacuation

Friday, March 11, 2011

Japan’s government has declared its first ever “nuclear emergency” after pressure rises in the No. 1 reactor at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant, combined with a minor radiation leak, caused a 10 km radius around the plant to be evacuated. An attempt to relieve the pressure inside the containment vessels of the plant has been delayed.

The Tokyo Electric Power Company’s 40-year old nuclear facility, 270 km NE of Tokyo, reported mechanical difficulties with its cooling system, although the automated shutdown systems worked correctly. With the core reaction shut down the plant is no longer actively generating heat, but the fuel rods continue to generate excess heat and radiation and need constant cooling.

The cooling system runs a constant flow of water to take the heat away from the submerged fuel rods, but the pumping system requires electricity to operate even after the plant is no longer producing electricity itself—generally from back-up diesel or natural gas generators.

Commonwealth Bank of Australia CEO apologies for financial planning scandal

Thursday, July 3, 2014

Ian Narev, the CEO of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, this morning “unreservedly” apologised to clients who lost money in a scandal involving the bank’s financial planning services arm.

Last week, a Senate enquiry found financial advisers from the Commonwealth Bank had made high-risk investments of clients’ money without the clients’ permission, resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars lost. The Senate enquiry called for a Royal Commission into the bank, and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).

Mr Narev stated the bank’s performance in providing financial advice was “unacceptable”, and the bank was launching a scheme to compensate clients who lost money due to the planners’ actions.

In a statement Mr Narev said, “Poor advice provided by some of our advisers between 2003 and 2012 caused financial loss and distress and I am truly sorry for that. […] There have been changes in management, structure and culture. We have also invested in new systems, implemented new processes, enhanced adviser supervision and improved training.”

An investigation by Fairfax Media instigated the Senate inquiry into the Commonwealth Bank’s financial planning division and ASIC.

Whistleblower Jeff Morris, who reported the misconduct of the bank to ASIC six years ago, said in an article for The Sydney Morning Herald that neither the bank nor ASIC should be in control of the compensation program.

2011 Stimulus Plan

Submitted by: Sandi Lattin

President Obama has reached an agreement with Republicans in regards to what could be called the 2011 Stimulus Plan . The tax reduction and spending agreement is broad based. It will benefit the whole economic spectrum of the American populace.

The framework agreement announced by the President secures vital tax relief and investments in our workers that will create jobs & accelerate economic growth. The plan has three key accomplishments:

Working families will not lose their tax cut. A typical working family faced a tax increase of over $3,000 on January 1st. That’s avoided under this framework agreement, and working families won’t see their tax cuts go away next year.

Focused on high impact job creation measures. The framework agreement includes some of the best measures for jump-starting growth and job creation, including a full year of emergency employment insurance benefits, an about $120 billion payroll tax cut for working families and a continuation of tax credits for working families. This is on top of growth generated by extension of the middle-class income tax rates.

Does not worsen the medium- and long-term deficit. These are responsible, temporary measures to support our economy that will not add costs by the middle of the decade. The President does not believe it is affordable to make the high-income tax cuts permanent and will continue to have that debate in the years ahead.

Overview of the Framework agreement:

Extending the 2001/2003 Income-Tax Rates for two years. The framework agreement includes a mutually agreed upon solution to the impasse over taxes by extending the 2001/2003 income tax rates for two years and reforming the AMT to ensure that an additional 21 million households will not be hit with a tax increase. These measures will provide relief to more than 100 million middle-class families and prevent a tax increase of over $2,000 for the typical family.

Additional Provisions Designed to promote vigorous economic growth. In addition to the 2001/2003 rates, the administration secured several provisions that are vital for our economy’s growth, which would not have been possible without this framework agreement: $56 billion in unemployment insurance, an about $120 billion payroll tax cut for working families and students; and 100% expensing for businesses next year.

1.Growth-Oriented Payroll Tax Cut for Workers:

The framework agreement reached by the administration includes about 2% employee-side payroll tax cut for over 155 million workers-providing tax relief of about $120 billion next year. This tax cut will have a major impact on jobs and growth-creating substantial numbers of jobs. It is widely recognized by economists across the political spectrum as a high bang for the buck way to boost growth and was cited by both major deficit reduction commissions as consistent with long term fiscal discipline.

A payroll tax cut has been endorsed by experts and commentators from across the political spectrum. Just last month, both the President’s Fiscal Commission and the Bipartisan Policy Center’s Debt Reduction Task Force described a payroll tax cut in 2011 as an effective way to spur growth and job creation. The tax cut legislation would provide for a transfer of General Revenues to the Social Security Trust Fund, ensuring no negative impact on Social Security solvency. And, as economist Nouriel Roubini wrote earlier this year, a payroll tax cut would spur growth because for employees, the increased take-home pay would boost much-needed economic consumption and advance the still-crucial process of deleveraging households .

2.High Impact, Job creating Tax Cuts for Working Families

Economic studies consistently find that lower-income households are the most likely to spend additional money, creating jobs & helping overall growth. That’s why the Congressional Budget office, for instance, has concluded that policies aimed at lower-income households tend to have greater stimulative effects. The President fought to secure a two-year increase of the full Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Tax Credit. These provisions will, together, provide ongoing tax cuts to 12 million lower income families, with a total of 24 million children. In addition, the deal fully extends the American Opportunity Credit for two years.

Illustrative Family: A working family with 3 children making $20,000 will continue to receive a tax cut of more than $2,000 as a result of the EITC and Child Tax Credit expansions in this framework agreement. The same family would receive an additional $400 tax cut from the new payroll tax cut.

Child Tax Credit: The $1,000 child tax credit will be extended for two years with the $3,000 refund-ability threshold established in the Recovery Act. This extension will ensure an ongoing tax cut to 10.5 million lower income families with 18 million children.

Earned Income Tax Credit: The Recovery Act included an expansion of the EITC worth, on average, $600 in additional assistance to families with 3 or more children. It also helped working married families by reducing the marriage penalty in EITC. Continuing this tax cut for two years will benefit 6.5 million working parents with 15 million children.

American Opportunity Tax Credit: The Recovery Act included a new, partially refundable tax credit of up to $2,500 to help students and their families cover the cost of college tuition. This deal fully extends AOTC for two years, ensuring that more than 8 million students will continue to receive this tax benefit to help them afford college.

3.Unemployment Insurance:

The framework agreement extended unemployment benefits at their current level for 13 months, through the end of 2011. This will save millions of Americans searching for work from losing their unemployment benefits in the coming months and will create hundreds of thousands of jobs.

In December alone, 2 million workers who would have lost benefits will continue to receive them because of this framework agreement over the next year, 7 million workers will no longer need to worry that their unemployment benefits could be eliminated as they search for jobs.

According to the Council of Economic Advisers, passing this provision will create 600,000 jobs in 2011 alone.

4.Business Tax Cuts To Increase Investment and Growth:

In September, the President called for temporarily allowing businesses to expense all of their investments in 2011. This growth-oriented tax cut was included in the framework agreement.

According to the Treasury Department, complete expensing could generate more than $50 billion in additional investment in the U.S. and would be the largest temporary investment incentive in American history.

The framework agreement also includes a 2-year extension of the R & D tax credit and other tax incentives to support business expansion.

Botswana holds parliamentary elections

Saturday, October 17, 2009

Voters in Botswana will head to the polls this Friday to vote in parliamentary elections. The incumbent Democratic Party, in power since 1966, is expected to win the vote.

Some voters left their homes as early as 04.00 local time to be in time for the opening of polling stations two hours later, and voters moved through polling stations at a steady pace throughout the day.

About 700,000 residents are registered to vote. Joseph Gaie, lecturer in political ethics at Botswana University in Gaborone, told the Voice of America news agency that a good turnout had been expected.

Well a lot of people, elderly people take this as a duty – every five years they have to go and vote.

“Well a lot of people, elderly people take this as a duty – every five years they have to go and vote,” he said. “And then a lot of youth that have just come, this will be the first time that 18-year-olds vote, so they are very excited about it.”

Voting had proceeded without incidents or violence at polling stations, officials said. “We have not received any complaints of intimidation from any of the political parties,” said the head of the Southern African Development Community observer mission Francisco Madeira.

The two major opposition parties, the Botswana National Front and the Botswana Congress Party, are hoping to do much better this time than in previous elections and have indicated they may cooperate in parliament after the poll.

Botswana is a democracy that has seen consistent economic growth in the 43 years since it won independence from the UK. That growth is largely due to exports from the country’s diamond industry, which suffered dramatically in the global economic crisis. The net effect of that has seen an 11.5% contraction of the economy in the year that ended in June. The election results will be known on Saturday.

Mr Slavin said “Our concern is that winds this afternoon will be swinging around to the south and increasing in intensity.” “It’s making us nervous. The advice we’re giving to people in Dwellingup is if they’ve decided that they will leave, this would be a good time to do it”

Father accused of trying to sell daughter, child star of ‘Slumdog Millionaire’

Monday, April 20, 2009

Rafiq Qureshi, the father of Rubina Ali, a child star of the Academy Award winning movie Slumdog Millionaire, has been accused of trying to sell his daughter. Qureshi was brought in for questioning by Indian police after a British news agency made accusations that he tried to sell his daughter. Ali played the character Latika.

Ali was the youngest actress in the movie, only 9 years old. She currently resides in a very poor area of Mumbai with her step-mother, father, and brother. Funds have been set up for Ali’s education and the local government has agreed to give housing to the children in the family.

News of the World says the alleged sale came to light during a sting operation performed by the news agency. They allege that Qureshi tried to sell his daughter for US$290,000 (£200,000) to his brother-in-law Rajan More.

“On Sunday, Rubina’s mother Khurshid complained to us that her ex-husband was trying to sell her daughter, saying she saw some reports on television to that effect,” said deputy Indian police commissioner, Nisar Tamboli to Reuters. Police say he tried to sell Ali to his brother-in-law because the family was not happy with the amount of money Ali was getting from her role in the film. More says Ali is not happy with living with her father.

“I have to consider what’s best for me, my family and Rubina’s future. We’ve got nothing out of this film,” said Qureshi as alleged by News of the World who also alleges that Ali’s brother Mohiuddin was in on the plan.

The family denies any wrongdoing and denies they tried to sell Ali.

“We never thought that we would have to face this. We are poor people, for us, our children are everything. Why would we give her away like that?,” said Moinuddin Qureshi, the uncle of Ali.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident.
