MAKING OUR HOMES ECO- FRIENDLY

by

Gagan Bakshi

It is so fascinating to know how our homes changed with the passage of times. It started initially with clean homes giving hygiene utmost importance, which was mostly taken care of by the women. But with them moving out of homes too for the bread, house maintenance saw a downfall and now in this modern era today, a lot of homes are bending towards hygienic environment inside homes.

And so hail the new buzz of healthy homes and that is maintain an eco-friendly home . You can now either opt for ready-made eco-friendly homes or make changed within your homes to ensure natural homes. There are two major benefits of an environment friendly home: a safe atmosphere for your family plus a contribution towards the protection of nature, simultaneously!

Your eco-friendly house

A lot of eco friendly homes today are constructed with peaceful dwellings which in turn widen the environmental capacities and also lessen the harmful impacts. In fact, when these eco-friendly homes are constructed, the main concept kept in mind is creating a safe and sustainable home with no compromise on luxury at all.

When you have decided with constructing your

eco-friendly home

, it is started with organized budgeting, designing as well as scheduling. Use of renewable energy technology is promoted while constructing your home that holds the nature s hands. For instance, the solar water heating system is one economical way of water heating, which prevents the loss of unnecessary energy generated by non-renewable resources. Other cost-effective methods to generate electricity using the air around are the wind-turbines and the wood pellet stoves.

Constructing the green house

What needs to be constantly stressed here is that the sole reason of creating an environment friendly home is to take responsibility as a human of the nature gifted to us and respect our eternal relation with it. Constructing a green home essentially revolves around four facets i.e. solar orientation, the home design, the structure of the house and the use of green technology!

During the solar orientation, the layout and position of your green home is chosen in accordance to the amount of solar energy your home would receive. The next step includes designing of your home and that revolves around effective placement of windows and doors so as to facilitate enough natural ventilation into your house. Following this, the green home structure is taken up which encloses the consideration of the walls and roofs composition that absorbs the UV rays and safeguards the home. Finally and most important of all, renewable-energy technology is made use of inside the home.

The purpose of constructing an eco-friendly home is not just providing your beloved with a natural and safe surrounding, but also contributes to saving the extinct energy resources with energy-proficient technology.

Making your homes eco-friendly

If you can t afford to construct an eco-friendly house right away, certain measures right inside your house walls can be taken to take at least one step towards rendering a safe home to your family. Indoor plants and greenery is very beneficial. Tiny pots of flowering plants can change your house s ambience entirely. A yet another wise step to take is using a mirror especially in the hallway or the main sitting area. This opens up the living area and if it happens to reflect your plants, it will only double the freshness inside your eco-friendly home!

After all, an

eco-friendly home

lives for centuries at a stretch; so wouldn t you like to leave it down for the gen-next?

Homes destroyed and feared loss of life in New South Wales bush fires

Friday, October 18, 2013

A massive fire is feared to have killed residents and destroyed more than one hundred homes in the Blue Mountains region of New South Wales, Australia. The blaze is one of the worst New South Wales have seen in more than a decade, said Premier Barry O’Farrell.

Emergency services attempted to evaluate the extent of the devastation on Thursday night, and determined that up to 30 homes in the area of Springwood had been lost. Mr O’Farrell says it will be a miracle if lives were not lost in the blaze. Rural Fire Service Commissioner, Shane Fitzimmons said that it could take some time to assess the true extent of the damage, however, and fears it could be much worse.

“We’ll be counting properties in the dozens, if not the hundreds,” he said.

Weather conditions are set to ease on Friday, however the firefighters have a huge battle ahead of them, says Deputy RFS Commissioner Rob Rogers.

“The worst combination is north-westerly to south-westerly and we’ve got that now. We’ve got an incredibly long fire front and there is no sign of any rain coming”.

Schools in the Blue Mountains were evacuated last night, with many residents seeking refuge at emergency evacuation centres around the area. Around 600 students were transported to Springwood Sports Club for shelter.

While fires continue to cause destruction across the Blue Mountains region, around 100 further blazes are being contained across the Central Coast and in the Southern Highlands.

Residents have been urged to leave areas surrounding the Blue Mountains region, after the alert system was upgraded to an ‘emergency warning’.

American Indian Movement spokesperson dies, age 75

Wednesday, October 17, 2007

Vernon Bellecourt, once the primary spokesperson for the American Indian Movement, died recently at age 75. Bellecourt, an Ojibwa who fought for Native rights, was perhaps best known for his opposition to Native names and mascots for sports teams.

First in the headlines in 1972, Bellecourt organized a cross-country caravan of the Movement, to Washington. Once there, members of the group occupied the Bureau of Indian Affairs offices. His goal of international recognition for Aboriginal nations and their treaties found him meeting with figures like Libyan Colonel Muammar el-Qaddafi, and Palestine’s Yasir Arafat. In 1977 Leonard Peltier was convicted and sentenced to two consecutive life terms for the murder of two FBI Agents during a 1975 shoot-out on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation; Bellecourt led the campaign to free him.

Most recently, he visited Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez, to discuss getting free or cheap heating oil for reservations.

His work as president of the National Coalition on Racism in Sports and Media made a much wider known mark, though. Bellecourt emphasized that he believed such names perpetuated racial stereotypes, clouding the real identities and problems facing natives.

Teams with native-related names could almost guarantee on Bellecourt showing up at major games. He twice burned an effigy of Chief Wahoo, the Cleveland Indians baseball team mascot, and both times was arrested. When the Washington Redskins of the National Football League made the Super Bowl, Vernon was there to protest. The United States Commission on Civil Rights was critical of such names by 2001, calling them “insensitive in light of the long history of forced assimilation”. Some newspapers have stopped using the names of teams with Native origins.

None of his “big four” targets have shown any indication of changing: the Washington Redskins, the Kansas City Chiefs, the Cleveland Indians or the Atlanta Braves.

Post-season use of American Indian mascots were banned by the National Collegiate Athletic Association in 2005, suggesting the names are “hostile or abusive”. Bellecourt was pleased with the NCAA sanctions, but suggested such actions were only going “half way”.

The Florida State Seminole and the Illinois Illini were among the 18 colleges affected by the ban. Florida president T.K. Wetherell threatened legal action in response. The Florida Seminole tribes have endorsed the University’s usage of the name, but some out-of-state tribes were “not supportive”, according to the NCAA vice president for diversity and inclusion.

Born WaBun-Inini, Bellecourt died from complications of pneumonia on October 13, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States.

Modern radio drama Paranoria, TX releases 100th episode

Thursday, February 16, 2017

Paranoria, TX, a modern radio drama hosted at internet-based AstroNet Radio, released its 100th episode. The episode is titled The People’s Choice and aired on Monday.

The station’s web site describes the show as “old school radio theater with a new and outrageous geeky spin!” In its early days, the show was featured solely at the long-running internet radio site TogiNet Radio, a site focused on talk radio. In late 2015, TogiNet established AstroNet Radio as a subsidiary station. The show originally featured amateur voice actors, local to East Texas. After some time, professional actors/talent came to be featured intermittently. Some of those were

Wikinews caught up with the show’s producer, George Jones, to discuss the show.

((WN)) First, tell our readers about Paranoria, Texas.

George Jones: Paranoria, TX started out as a little show that could. We really didn’t know what we were doing but we wanted to do Old School radio in a brand new format which consisted of a new script every week with a cast of voice actors. The result was a surprising hit and now the show has grown into something completely different than what it was in the beginning and we have followers worldwide. The basic premise of the story is that there is a group of nerds who come together plotting to take over the world but end up saving it time and again.

((WN)) When did the idea for the show first come to you?

GJ: I was called into the [TogiNet] studio for an interview about one of my events and while I was there the DJ asked me if I had ever thought about doing a radio show myself. I had no idea what I was going to do but I was intrigued and after a little brainstorming and utilizing my own creativity the show was born.

((WN)) You’ve written most of the scripts, right? Has anyone else helped you with writing?

GJ: I have written 90% of the scripts for the show. Eric Nivens, Alan Mendez, Jeremy Nagel and Matt McBride have also written a few scripts. It gets tough running a brand new 20-page script every week but somehow we’ve managed for almost a hundred weeks. We thank God for fans who keep us going, otherwise it would not have made it for so long.

Jones estimates since the first episode, the show has been downloaded roughly 30,000 times. The show is set to feature a spin-off series soon.

Considering The Best Vanity Mirror For Your Bathroom

Submitted by: Heather Mitchell

Shopping for the best vanity mirror is not as easy as it seems. There are a lot factors to consider such as the quality, price, features and sizes. Every piece of bathroom accessory takes careful planning when trying to create an elegant bathroom. Here are some of the factors you should consider before buying a one:

Space

The first thing to consider is the space. You have the option to choose an item that is wide as your bathroom vanity or as wide as the sink only. Next, measure the width of your bathroom vanity or the sink. Measure the length between your ceiling and the topmost part of the sink. Take into consideration the placement of the lightings on the wall. It would be best if your vanity mirror falls between the vanity lights. Record all your measurements on a piece of paper or notebook.

Material of the Mirror Frame

Ideally, it should match the material that your vanity cabinet is made of. For instance, if the cabinet is made of wood, then your mirror frame should be made of decorative wood. As a rule, those with wooden frames should be smaller than the width of the counter. Stand-alone sinks, on the other hand, look more elegant with oval mirrors on top. Chrome framed options work best with bathroom vanity occupying an entire wall. Chrome frames are best for rectangular and square-shaped pieces. Installing one helps light up a room and gives the illusion that the room is wider. This is best for small-spaced bathrooms.

Beveled edge pieces work best for almost all kinds of vanities. They comes in rectangular, oval or circular shapes. Installing vanity lights in front of beveled edge mirrors add a more dramatic effect to the bathroom. Most of the time, this type of object is installed on walls using mirror clips. Frameless ones are easier to maintain although they are very fragile and should be properly handled with care. Some frameless mirrors also have decorative sketching on the mirror itself. They are suggested when you have a large-sized bathroom.

Cost

Chrome edged pieces are the least expensive of all types of vanity mirrors. Their frames can be either made of brass or silver. Beveled edge or frameless ones are mid-range in terms of cost. Wooden-framed pieces are usually the most expensive ones. Usually, the more intricate the designs are, the more expensive it is.

In terms of cost, another point to consider is the size. Wider pieces are more expensive that smaller ones. Before buying this sort of product, do some research on the Internet. Look for ones that have specifications appropriate for your needs.

Installing the mirror can be done personally, which obviously is the cheapest option. However, delicate ones such as those with beveled edges or large-sized pieces should be installed by a professional to prevent breakages.

Whatever type of mirror you choose, remember that it should always conform to your needs and budget. It is also important to choose a mirror specifically designed for bathrooms because they tend to withstand humidity and moisture than any other types of mirror.

SEPTA buys rail cars from NJ Transit to deal with crowding

Tuesday, July 29, 2008

As gas prices have risen in the United States, the regional transport authority for southeastern Pennsylvania, SEPTA, has seen a sharp increase in ridership, which has caused overcrowding on the trains.

“As fuel prices have continued to rise, SEPTA ridership has steadily increased and is the highest in 18 years,” said SEPTA General Manager Joseph Casey. Monthly ridership was 22 percent higher last month than a year ago.

“They have crushed loads on their rail lines, already where people are standing, and there’s not enough seats,” said Rich Bickel, the director of the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission.

“At peak times some railcars are standing room only and commuter parking lots are nearly full. All Regional Rail lines are running near full capacity and the train station parking lots are at about 90 percent capacity or more,” SEPTA spokesperson Felipe Suarez said.

While SEPTA awaits new Silverliner V trains from Hyundai Rotem, which begin arriving in 2009, it had hoped to lease eight rail cars from New Jersey Transit, at an agreed-upon rate of US$10,000 per month. However, due to problems with insurance and liability indemnification, the deal fell through, according to Casey.

SEPTA has entered a new agreement to purchase the eight rail cars from NJ Transit. The transit authority will pay US$670,000 for the cars and assorted supplies plus one additional inoperative car which will be used for spare parts. The rail cars will be operated using a SEPTA provided locomotive as they are not self-propelled.

The cars are being disposed of by NJ Transit because it has switched from single-floor cars to double-decker cars.

SEPTA is expecting to raise US$3.1 million by selling rail that has been out of service since 1981 at auction.
