Volvo announces all new car models electric or hybrid from 2019

Friday, July 7, 2017

On Wednesday, automobile company Volvo announced all of its cars to be released in 2019 onwards are to use some form of battery-powered engine, leaving conventional petrol-only vehicles altogether. The decision comes after Volvo announced in May their intent to cease production of diesel vehicles.

The chief executive of Volvo Cars, Håkan Samuelsson, said, “People increasingly demand electrified cars”. Volvo aims to release five new electric vehicle models between 2019 and 2021. While little has yet been revealed about them, the company has stated two of them are to be high-performance electric vehicles, branded as Polestars.

Other car models from 2019 may be plug-in hybrid or 48-volt “mild hybrid” systems. Audi and Mercedes-Benz are also releasing mild hybrid cars for the European market.

“This announcement marks the end of the solely combustion engine-powered car. Volvo Cars has stated that it plans to have sold a total of 1m electrified cars by 2025. When we said it we meant it. This is how we are going to do it,” Samuelsson said. Volvo is owned by Chinese automotive giant Geely, and China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has said by 2025 they want new vehicle sales to be 20 percent “new energy vehicles”.

Canadian university students would prefer MP3 players over car radios

Friday, March 30, 2007

At Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, students are finding that popular MP3 players, such as Apple’s iPod, are very convenient devices for listening to music at the gym, while traveling on foot, and in the car.

In a recent ad-hoc survey conducted by Wikinews contributor Darren Mar, 150 students were randomly pulled aside in the hallways of the university, and asked if they own an MP3 player. 94 of the 150 students (62.66%) did in fact own MP3 devices, most of who were found to be carrying it on them when questioned. There was one simple follow up question for those who had a player: “If it were possible to have complete and safe control of the device on the steering wheel of a car, would you rather listen to your device, or the radio?” There were three answers possible, yes, no or both. Of the 94, 78 (82.98%) said yes, eleven (11.70%) said no, and five (5.32%) said both. The reporting took place primarily on March 16, 2007. The reasons for those who would listen to their device were commercial free music, personalized choice of music, and complete control of what you are listening to.

This study was motivated by the new design of 2006+ model cars. Many are being built with auxiliary jacks for the stock radio, allowing the driver to easily connect any audio playing device to the car’s sound system with a simple 3.5mm plug. What’s more, cars in the upper price echelon are being built with (1) a custom made area in the dash for MP3 players (iPod’s being the most popular), and (2) implementing audio device control right onto the steering wheel. A good example of this is the Ford Fusion or the 2007 Lexus IS250: “The centre console input port allows an iPod, MP3 or Windows Media Audio player to be plugged into the IS audio system.”

Listeners call for tattooing of Muslims in America, supporting comedy skit

Saturday, December 9, 2006

When radio host Jerry Klein suggested that all Muslims in the United States should be identified with a crescent-shape tattoo,”the switchboard went from empty to totally jammed within minutes.” Some callers agreed with Klein, one saying that, “Not only do you tattoo them in the middle of their forehead but you ship them out of this country … they are here to kill us.” Another caller added that America should, “set up encampments like during World War Two with the Japanese and Germans”

At the end of the show Klein revealed that that it had been staged as a hoax. “I can’t believe any of you are sick enough to have agreed for one second with anything I said,” he told his AM 630 WMAL audience which covers Washington D.C., Northern Virginia and Maryland

“For me to suggest to tattoo marks on people’s bodies, have them wear armbands, put a crescent moon on their driver’s license on their passport or birth certificate is disgusting. It’s beyond disgusting.”

“Because basically what you just did was show me how the German people allowed what happened to the Jews to happen … We need to separate them, we need to tattoo their arms, we need to make them wear the yellow Star of David, we need to put them in concentration camps, we basically just need to kill them all because they are dangerous.”

Council on American-Islamic Relations Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper commented:

The public reaction to Mr. Klein’s courageous parody should be a wake-up call for American religious and political leaders who remain silent in the face of growing anti-Muslim bigotry in our society. Americans of all faiths must come together to marginalize extremists and to challenge ethnic and religious bigotry.

Exemption Handling In Java Useful Methods}

Exemption Handling in Java Useful Methods

by

The exemption classes are made to indicate distinctive sort of special case situations with the goal that we can without much of a stretch distinguish the main driver and handle the special case as indicated by it’s compose. Throwable class actualizes Serializable interface for interoperability.

A portion of the helpful strategies for Throwable class are;

1.public String getMessage() This technique restores the message String of Throwable and the message can be given while making the exemption through it’s constructor.

2.public String getLocalizedMessage() This technique is given with the goal that subclasses can supersede it to give area particular message to the calling program. Throwable class execution of this technique essentially utilize getMessage() strategy to restore the exemption message.

3.public synchronized Throwable getCause() This strategy restores the reason for the exemption or invalid id the reason is obscure.

4.public String toString() This strategy restores the data about Throwable in String position, the returned String contains the name of Throwable class and confined message.

5.public void printStackTrace() This technique prints the stack follow data to the standard mistake stream, this strategy is over-burden and we can pass PrintStream or PrintWriter as contention to compose the stack follow data to the record or stream.

Java 7 Automatic Resource Management and Catch block improvements

Java 7 Automatic Resource Management and Catch square changes On the off chance that you are getting a great deal of special cases in a solitary attempt square, you will see that catch piece code looks revolting and generally comprises of excess code to log the blunder, remembering this Java 7 one of the element was enhanced catch square where we can get numerous exemptions in a solitary catch square.

Special case Handling in Java Creating Custom Exception Classes

Java gives a considerable measure of exemption classes for us to utilize yet here and there we may need to make our own particular custom special case classes to advise the guest about particular kind of exemption with suitable message and any custom fields we need to present for following, for example, blunder codes.

For instance, suppose we compose a strategy to process just content records, so we can give guest proper blunder code when some other kind of document is sent as information.

Special case Handling in Java Best Practices

1.Use Specific Exceptions Base classes of Exception chain of importance doesn’t give any helpful data, that is the reason Java has such a large number of exemption classes, for example, IOException with additionally sub-classes as FileNotFoundException, EOFException and so forth. Toss Early or Fail-Fast We should endeavor to toss exemptions as ahead of schedule as could be allowed.

2. Catch Late Since java upholds to either deal with the checked exemption or to proclaim it in strategy signature, now and again engineers tend to get the special case and log the mistake. However, this training is hurtful in light of the fact that the guest program doesn’t get any notice for the special case. We should get exemption just when we can deal with it fittingly. Shutting Resources Since exemptions stop the handling of program, we should close every one of the assets in at long last square or utilize Java 7 attempt with-assets improvement to let java runtime close it for you.

3. Logging Exceptions We ought to dependably log special case messages and keeping in mind that tossing exemption give clear message with the goal that guest will know effortlessly why the special case happened. We ought to dependably maintain a strategic distance from exhaust get hinder that just devours the exemption and doesn’t give any significant points of interest of special case for troubleshooting.

4. Single catch hinder for various exemptions Most of the circumstances we log special case points of interest and give message to the client, for this situation we should utilize java 7 highlight for dealing with different exemptions in a solitary catch piece. This approach will diminish our code size and it will look cleaner as well.

5. Using Custom Exceptions It’s constantly better to characterize special case dealing with procedure at the outline time and as opposed to tossing and getting various exemptions, we can make a custom exemption with blunder code and guest program can deal with these mistake codes. Its likewise a smart thought to make an utility technique to process diverse mistake codes and utilize it.

6. Naming Conventions and Packaging When you make your custom exemption, ensure it closes with Exception so it will be demonstrate from innocence itself that it’s a special case. Additionally make a point to bundle them like it’s done in JDK, for instance IOException is the base special case for all IO operations.

7. Use Exceptions Judiciously Exceptions are exorbitant and here and there it’s not required to toss special case at all and we can restore a boolean variable to the guest program to show whether an operation was fruitful or not. This is useful where the operation is discretionary and you don’t need your program to stall out in light of the fact that it comes up short. For instance, while refreshing the stock statements in database from an outsider webservice, we might need to abstain from tossing special case if the association fizzles.

8. Document the Exceptions Thrown Use javadoc @throws to unmistakably determine the special cases tossed by the technique, it’s extremely useful when you are giving an interface to different applications to utilize.

At least nineteen dead after suicide bomb blast in Pakistan

Thursday, November 19, 2009

A suicide bomber has killed at least 19 people around a courthouse in the city of Peshawar, Pakistan.

Witnesses said that the powerful explosion occurred during rush hour. Several security personnel and lawyers are among the victims, and doctors reported that some of those injured are in a critical condition.

“One policemen [sic] has been martyred and four injured in the attack,” said a senior police official, Mohammad Karim Khan.

Senior police officer Sahibzada Anis, speaking to reporters, said that the suicide bomber was on foot and detonated the device when security guards stopped him for a search at the main entrance. The blast damaged several cars parked nearby. “The attacker was on foot and blew himself when guards tried to search him at the gates of the court,” he said.

Thursday’s suicide attack in Peshawar took place hours after missiles fired by a suspected American drone killed at least four suspected militants and wounded five others in the North Waziristan region, on the Afghan border. The area is a known stronghold of Afghan and al-Qaeda militants.

Taliban insurgents have intensified attacks in the country — particularly in and around Peshawar — after the Pakistani army launched an offensive against militant bases in South Waziristan. Officials said that since early last month more than 300 people have died in bombings and militant raids on government, civilian, and Western targets in the country.

BDSM as business: An interview with the owners of a dungeon

BDSM as business: An interview with the owners of a dungeon

Sunday, October 21, 2007

Torture proliferates American headlines today: whether its use is defensible in certain contexts and the morality of the practice. Wikinews reporter David Shankbone was curious about torture in American popular culture. This is the first of a two part series examining the BDSM business. This interview focuses on the owners of a dungeon, what they charge, what the clients are like and how they handle their needs.

When Shankbone rings the bell of “HC & Co.” he has no idea what to expect. A BDSM (Bondage Discipline Sadism Masochism) dungeon is a legal enterprise in New York City, and there are more than a few businesses that cater to a clientèle that wants an enema, a spanking, to be dressed like a baby or to wear women’s clothing. Shankbone went to find out what these businesses are like, who runs them, who works at them, and who frequents them. He spent three hours one night in what is considered one of the more upscale establishments in Manhattan, Rebecca’s Hidden Chamber, where according to The Village Voice, “you can take your girlfriend or wife, and have them treated with respect—unless they hope to be treated with something other than respect!”

When Shankbone arrived on the sixth floor of a midtown office building, the elevator opened up to a hallway where a smiling Rebecca greeted him. She is a beautiful forty-ish Long Island mother of three who is dressed in smart black pants and a black turtleneck that reaches up to her blond-streaked hair pulled back in a bushy ponytail. “Are you David Shankbone? We’re so excited to meet you!” she says, and leads him down the hall to a living room area with a sofa, a television playing an action-thriller, an open supply cabinet stocked with enema kits, and her husband Bill sitting at the computer trying to find where the re-release of Blade Runner is playing at the local theater. “I don’t like that movie,” says Rebecca.

Perhaps the most poignant moment came at the end of the night when Shankbone was waiting to be escorted out (to avoid running into a client). Rebecca came into the room and sat on the sofa. “You know, a lot of people out there would like to see me burn for what I do,” she says. Rebecca is a woman who has faced challenges in her life, and dealt with them the best she could given her circumstances. She sees herself as providing a service to people who have needs, no matter how debauched the outside world deems them. They sat talking mutual challenges they have faced and politics (she’s supporting Hillary); Rebecca reflected upon the irony that many of the people who supported the torture at Abu Ghraib would want her closed down. It was in this conversation that Shankbone saw that humanity can be found anywhere, including in places that appear on the surface to cater to the inhumanity some people in our society feel towards themselves, or others.

“The best way to describe it,” says Bill, “is if you had a kink, and you had a wife and you had two kids, and every time you had sex with your wife it just didn’t hit the nail on the head. What would you do about it? How would you handle it? You might go through life feeling unfulfilled. Or you might say, ‘No, my kink is I really need to dress in women’s clothing.’ We’re that outlet. We’re not the evil devil out here, plucking people off the street, keeping them chained up for days on end.”

Barcelona footballer Éric Abidal to undergo liver transplant

Barcelona footballer Éric Abidal to undergo liver transplant

Friday, March 16, 2012

FC Barcelona defender Éric Abidal will be taken into surgery for a liver transplant in the next few weeks, his club announced yesterday.

The France international football player, 32, had previously undertaken surgery to remove a tumour from his liver in March 2011. He recovered from the initial operation in time to win the UEFA Champions League with his club in May. In a statement, FC Barcelona cited ongoing medical concerns as reason for the player’s admission. “Given the development of his medical condition, Abidal will undergo a liver transplant in the following weeks”, the statement read. It added: “The transplant is an option that has been considered since the beginning of his treatment, one year ago. At the express wish of the player, the club request the utmost respect for the right to privacy.”

His club did not estimate how long he will be out of action, and there is serious doubt as to whether or not Abidal will be fit in time to make the French side for the Euro 2012 Championships, set to be held between June and July in Poland and Ukraine. Teammates posted messages at social networking site Twitter to convey their goodwill for the defender. Forward David Villa, who is currently out of action with a broken leg, said, “All my strength for Abidal! You will get through it. You are very strong. We will all be by your side.” “You will return and you will do it like always, being the best”, wrote central defender Gerard Pique. “You are an example for everyone.”

Abidal signed with Barcelona in 2007, leaving his old club Lyon. So far this season he has made 20 first-team appearances for the Spanish side; he has not played since injuring his hip in an international friendly against Germany earlier this month.

After his recovery from his surgery in 2011, he said he “thought that [he] wouldn’t play again”, and told of how he sold all the cars he owned, donating the money to “the fight against illnesses with some associations that I have had contact with”.

Chip Ganassi makes American motor sports history

Tuesday, July 27, 2010

NASCAR and Indy team owners Chip Ganassi and Felix Sabates became the first team owners in history to sweep the three top races in American motor sports. In February, NASCAR driver Jamie McMurray took the checkered flag at the Daytona 500 followed by Scottish driver Dario Franchitti’s win in the Indy open wheel series at the Indianapolis 500 in May. Jamie McMurray helped make it a clean sweep when over the weekend he again took the top spot (and his second win of the season) by winning the Brickyard 400, also held at the Indianapolis Motor speedway.

Pole sitter Juan Pablo Montoya led the majority of Sunday’s race, but in a late pit stop, he and his crew chief Brian Pattie conservatively changed four tires while teammate and rival McMurray changed only two. As a result, the Colombian born driver fell back in the field, and eventually crashed out of the race. This marks the second time Montoya has dominated this race only to fall short at the end.

NASCAR Sprint Cup points leader Kevin Harvick finished in second place, followed by Greg Biffle, Clint Bowyer and Tony Stewart.

Ganassi, a former open wheel driver, formed Target Chip Ganassi Racing in 1990. This team entered cars in North America’s two leading open wheel series, CART and the Indy Racing League (IRL). Meanwhile in 1989, Sabates formed SABCO Racing to compete in the NASCAR Cup, the leading stock car class in the United States. Ganassi’s operation merged with SABCO in 2001, forming an organization with teams that compete not only in NASCAR and IRL, but also in sports car endurance racing. Ganassi drivers won seven open wheel championships between 1996 and 2009. Missouri NASCAR driver Jamie McMurray re-joined Ganassi’s team for the 2010 season, after a five year spell with Roush-Fenway Racing.

Also in North American motorsport on Sunday, Spanish rider Jorge Lorenzo took the checkered flag in the United States Grand Prix at California’s Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Lorenzo’s victory on a Fiat Yamaha bike, over Casey Stoner (second) and Valentino Rossi (third), strengthened his points lead in the MotoGP championship.

The next race in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will be held on Sunday at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pennsylvania, where Denny Hamlin is the defending race champion.
